BOX OFFICE: X-MEN And TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Continue To Underperform

X-Men: Apocalypse and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles did not fare well at the box office this weekend. Read on for where the films currently stand along with where they're expect to finish...

While the Conjuring 2 and Warcraft topped the box office this weekend (read more about that here), some other comic book related properties continued an uphill battle against waning interest. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows earned $14.8 million in its second weekend, for a total drop of 58% from its opening weekend. The first installment of the rebooted series experienced a very similar drop (56%) when it was released in 2014, so it doesn't seem like the sequel is playing very well with audiences, despite being touted as an improvement over the original.  The film is expected to finish with close to $100 million, if not a little over that, so the possibility of a sequel seems slim unless the movie does incredibly well overseas.

X-Men: Apocalypse also continued to underperform, earning $10 million in its third weekend (a 56% drop) for a domestic total of  $136.3 million over 17 days.  Apocalypse did make a stride, however, as it is no longer the lowest-grossing X-Men movie, passing the $132 million domestic gross of The Wolverine. That being said, the film is still dropping faster on its third weekend in comparison to its predecessors, X-Men: The Last Stand (52%) and X-Men: Days of Future Past (53%) and will still struggle to top the $157 million gross of the original X-Men. The sequel earned an additional $25 million overseas (taking a big hit from China due to the release of Warcraft) and has now earned $478m globally. If all goes well, the film will likely finish with a total of $550m globally, still the third biggest X-Men movie behind Deadpool and Days of Future Past. It's not a flop by any means, but failing to outgross even Days Of Future Past is not a good sign for the Fox franchise.

Have you seen both films? What did you think? Sound off below!

I figured at least $650m....it's now expected to finish with $100m less. Shows that DoFP's success was really cause of Wolvie and the old cast.

@SuperCat - I wish all the turtles were around Mikey's size. Big, but not too big. It would've made things more interesting seeing smaller turtles taking on a larger Bebop and Rocksteady

@MattBellissimo - I kind of liked that they were different sizes. I think I was napping when they actually fought Bebop and Rocksteady. LOL.

@MattBellissimo - Them new turtles are damn football players. They're scary! I wish they were all Mikey's size too. I greatly prefer the 1990 film version of these characters.

I remember when people would say Civil War wouldn't make a billion cuz it had to compete with X-Men. LMFAOOOOO!

@TexasAvenger - I don't remember anyone saying that. People, from what I saw, said Civil War would likely make its money by the time X-Men came out, but that X-Men would struggle do to waning interest and a poor release time.

Yeah, I remember that. Just a bunch of DC trolls acting like they actually like fox men. They're just mad Marvel's doing so well

"Cap 3 will face Xmen Apocalypse in less than 21 days

if Cap 3 makes 200Mill per week that means when Xmen debuts it will only have 600Mil when Xmen debuts andX men DOFP made 700Mill too so what will happen then?"
