BOX OFFICE: X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Performs Admirably Overseas But May End Up Being A Flop Domestically

While X-Men: Apocalypse is performing well overseas (mostly thanks to an impressive debut in China), things are looking pretty bleak in North America, and the statistics are a real embarrassment for Fox.

As expected, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows was the #1 movie at the North American box office this weekend with a mediocre $35.3 million, a far cry from the amount earned by the first instalment back in 2014 (65.6 million). Its current worldwide cume is $69.3 million, so it has a lot of work to do if it hopes to come anywhere near the near $500 million made by its predecessor.

X-Men: Apocalypse meanwhile fell to #2 domestically with $22.3 million, a massive 66% drop which is just slightly lower than X-Men: The Last Stand's 67% fall a decade ago during the same weekend. With a current haul of $116.5 million, analysts now believe that the Bryan Singer helmed release will conclude its run with $165 million, a paltry amount just 5% better than the first X-Men in 2000 and less than Batman v Superman's opening weekend and what Deadpool made during its first five days.

Things are looking good overseas though, as X-Men: Apocalypse beat the Turtles this weekend with $84.4 million, a big chunk of which came from a solid $59 million debut in China. Now, the movie has racked up a foreign total of $286 million and passed $400 million worldwide. Chances are it will conclude its run with $650 million in total, a good result, but less than the studio wanted.

The biggest issue here is how the movie so badly underperformed domestically, and that will no doubt lead to Fox rethinking their approach to the franchise moving forward. What that will entail obviously remains to be seen, but be sure to let us know what you watched this weekend in the usual place.

Marvel trying to get X-Men, but then Fox just comes in...

@TheArkhamKnight - I will never support X-Men until Marvel gets them back or they work wit Marvel. If Marvel never gets involved then I'll go see the movies.

Yeah, everyone will be all "MARVEL WINS BECAUSE 66% DROP". But I saw this coming. The X-Men films always drop 55-70% in their second weekend, espically ones that got mixed to negative reviews. I liked Apocalypse, but I get why people didn't. On the bright side, Zootopia hit $1 billion.

@Quicker - I'd say "DEADPOOL WINS" more than anything, for showing how a comics-accurate take on X-Characters can really pay off. It just started its Japan run at the box office, where it had a great opening. i doubt it can catch BvS at the WW box office, though that would be amazing to see.

And seriously, congrats to Zootopia for being the second film across the $1b mark this year.

@Chewtoy - people keep throwing this comic accurate crap out there for deadpool...there was only deadpool and colossus that had comic booky costumes and deadpool's craziness (which technically is not comic book accurate either). Other than that the entire movie did its own thing which was brought by Fox. It was just a good movie that's why people liked it and Ryan Reynolds did a hell of a job promoting it. Xmen has a bunch of problems, but they can get fixed and hopefully will, but u can bet that they aren't going to marvel studios any time soon.

@four20smoke - negasonic's costume was a hell of a lot more comic accurate than any of the x-men costumes in the other movies.

The studios only take in about 50% of the domestic box office and 33% of the foreign box office. They don't get the whole box office by far.
Based on that Deadpool has turned a $257 million dollar profit and BvS has turned $43 million.
Deadpool may not beat BvS' overall box office # but it has killed every CBM in pure profit.
Deadpool has almost doubled the profit of all the other X-Men movies COMBINED!! $257 vs $134
Food for thought for DC/WB, Fox, Sony and Marvel/Disney.
I foresee big changes coming in the CBM world and it sounds like the hot rumors of what is going on at some corporate places are backing me up on it.
You know Feige is trying to figure out a way to make a Deadpool like movie.

@JonC - This is a thoughtful post. However, the one studio that probably isn't too worried about copying Deadpool is Marvel; they've already established a very successful template. And, in any case, I would say that Deadpool rather resembles the Marvel approach in being very faithful to the tone of the source material. That's what made Deadpool great, not the R rating in itself.

My worry is that Fox will simply try to ape what Deadpool did with other properties that won't really suit the same approach.

@JonC - can you explain why Feige needs to do a "Deadpool like" movie? From a financial standpoint, he's on a roll. I mean, I think it'd be cool if he did, but why does he need to?
