It Appears That A Bryan Singer Directed X-MEN Film Is Now A Thing Of The Past

Tension on the set of the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody has led to Fox firing Bryan Singer who in turn, packed up his Bad Hat Harry production company and moved them off the Fox lot.

As long as the X-Men remain at 20th Century Fox (and who knows how long that will last), it appears there's not going to be another Bryan Singer-directed take on the Marvel Comics' premiere superhero mutant team.

Singer failed to return to the set of the Rami Malek led Freddie Mercury biopic after the Thanksgiving Break, causing a halt in production. With his absence unexplained, reports surfaced that this behavior is actually a common occurrence, with Singer pulling similar disappearing acts while filming
X-Men: Apocalypse and  Superman Returns.

Singer issued a statement that Fox was not accommodating his need to deal with an urgent matter - which the X-Men: Days of Future Past helmer says were his requirements to care for a sick parent. However, the aforementioned similar instances of disappearing from sets are raising doubts around the web about the veracity of Singer's claims.

At the very least, Fox isn't buying what Singer's selling and they've fired him from Bohemian Rhapsody. Additional reports also state that Singer clashed often and loudly with Malek (with Singer throwing objects in one instance). In his statement, Singer acknowledged the "creative differences" he and Malek had but insists that they had put them behind them just before his firing.

Singer's Bad Hat Harry production company had a three-year, first-look deal with Fox and even had their offices located on the studio's lot. The deal had actually expired but was tentatively extended for Freddie Mercury pic. In the wake of Singer's firing, Bad Hat Harry is currently packing boxes and looking for new office space.

Deadline adds that Fox had been discretely taking meetings for a potential replacement for Singer well before his actual firing.

Singer directed the first two installments in the X-Men franchise, X-Men and X-2 but departed to direct Superman ReturnsX-Men 3: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Class were helmed by Brett Ratner and Matthew Vaughn respectively, before Singer returned to direct Days of Future Past and X-Men: Apocalypse.  Simon Kinberg is directing X-Men: Dark Phoenix but these latest developments make it almost a certainty that Singer will not be returning to direct another X-Men film after the X-Men's adventure in space.

Thank god! Get that bland piece of shit director out of here!

@PicolasCage - "Bland"? Him and Sam Raimi ushered the new era of CBMs.

I'm not excusing his behavior here, but come on.

@DavidGray - Yes, in the case of Singer, he did that being exactly what the dude said there, by being BLAND.

We all rushed to watch X-Men and cried watching it, but we did that because it was all we had at the time, period.

@DavidGray - his visual style is bland, no panache whatsoever. The only thing I can remember from his movies is his leather fetish, I guess that’s unique.

@ODanil - Yes, and at that time we could've got a much worse film.

X2 has aged beautifully.

@DavidGray - he may have ushered it in.... yes. But I would agree with "bland" being the correct terminology here.

@DavidGray - ehh, it's not bad...it's just...not really the x-men...

@PicolasCage - He gets credit, along with Sam RAimi, for introducing Marvel characters to the big screen in a credible way. First 2 Xmen were good movies. Later on not so much.

Good riddance and it won't matter anyway because those properties will be at Disney soon.

@PicolasCage - it was really good. he got the message of what the xmen stand for to many people who didnt care. nobody wanted stupid jokes, colorful costume, and an overstuffed cinematic universe back then. Joel schulmuccher like dceu is doing now, murdered comic book movies for a decade because of trying to appease kids, fans, and sell toys.

it actually might suck if disney acquires it because their movies are so episodic, full of setups, quippy jokes, and all their films are "too safe" where nothing major rarely happens in any film. they are skippable, like i can skip guardians 2 and spiderman homecoming before avengers 3 and it wpuld not matter.

@DavidGray - Agree and agree. X2 is still a classic. And DOFP, though it may not be comic accurate, is an amazing movie that is unlike any other CBM and ranks up there in quality with the best of the MCU. I just watched DOFP again the other day, and I'm not seeing this whole "bland" thing. I'm of the opinion that movies like Doctor Strange and Ant Man are far more bland than the best of Singer's X-Men movies (aside from Apocalypse).

@PicolasCage - X-2 and DOFP are still great CBMs. What he tried to do with Apocalypse was outside of his skill set though.

lol this article is a joke too. it is so biased. singer got fired from Fox's fred mercury biopic because they wouldnt let him delay production on the film. His mother got very ill and may pass away so he wanted to delay filming to take care of his sick mom.

This year is just full of stupid money hungry execs firing directors and hiring sub par directors to finish films that are already near done.

@mastakilla39 - Yea....had nothing to do with him being a d!ck, clashing with the talent (Tom Hollander & Raimi Malek), and being extremely unprofessional BEFORE his mother became ill.

Then, claiming to have PTSD because of the on-set arguments...

How is it a thing of the past? He’s done 4 films & wrote 1. He’s done enough damage

Did people want to see him do more damage?
LEVITIKUZ
LEVITIKUZ - 12/5/2017, 7:32 AM
And this is coming from someone who think X-Men 1 is ok
X2 is great
First Class is great
DOFP is great
And Apocalypse is dumpster fire trash

But as good as Singer’s films have been; Mangold, Miller, & Vaughn’s X-Men films are superiority better directed than Singer’s films have been
MarkJulian

@LEVITIKUZ - it's a thing of the past because he'll never do another one. He'll never do any more films for Fox.

I was merely joking around at anyone who’d think he’d come back to the X-Men franchise because well, he needs to leave the franchise lol

@LEVITIKUZ - i always thought he did a good job. He took the source material seriously and didnt try to sell it for kids and stupid teens exclusively. he made a serious film every1 can enjoy.

During the prestige hugh jackman said that Nolan's big inspiration for batman begins was singer's X-men because he didnt wanted to do a stupid comic book film. So he made batman more grounded, realistic, and the plot/characters just loosely based on the source.

Disney buying fox and Bryan singer never being able to touch the X - men films again , it's all going according to plan.
Shanksman
Shanksman - 12/5/2017, 8:28 AM
@CurlyBill - Even if Disney didnt buy Fox's movie division Singer's not gonna touch X-men again though. The problem now is that Simon Kinberg is still there and worse, he's directing this time.
