Why Rogue Would Have Seriously Damaged X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Why Rogue Would Have Seriously Damaged X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

While many fans expressed disappointment over the cutting of Rogue from the final cut of X-Men: Days of Future Past, I see it as a blessing in disguise. Want to know how the absence of one of the greatest X-Men of all time helped the film? Hit the jump to find out!

Editorial Opinion
By BobbyDrakeApproaches - Jan 08, 2015 06:01 PM EST

I am a huge fan of Rogue, in both the comics and the movies, so please do not misinterpret my next statement as anything other than constructive criticism.

I hope Rogue was dead at the beginning of X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Why? Well, think about it for a moment. Lots of people are dead. We do not see Nightcrawler, Angel, or Beast, so I think it is fair to assume that they were killed by Sentinels. Wolverine even confirms Beast’s death later in the movie. Since we do not see Rogue, I think it is fair to say that she was killed by Sentinels.

Of course, you know the reason I am writing this editorial: A deleted scene, where Iceman, Magneto, and Professor X rescue Rogue from the clutches of the Sentinels. We will be able to see this scene in an extended cut of the movie that will be released next year. Why do the X-Men save Rogue? To relieve Kitty from sending-consciousness-back-in-time duty. This makes sense when you consider that Kitty has already been stabbed by an unconscious Wolverine, but it makes less sense when you consider that Rogue’s powers have never helped anyone feel better ever.

So what is the problem with this version of the story? Well, if Rogue is still alive, that means that Professor X, Storm, Wolverine, and Iceman left her to die.

Okay, we do not know how she was captured, and if any of these characters were at fault, but we do know that the people that care the most about Rogue are aware she is still alive, and in captivity, possibly being tortured. When do they decide to rescue her? Only when they need her powers.

Now, you could make the argument that they were not capable of rescuing her beforehand, that she was being held captive in a heavily fortified fortress. If that was the case, that would mean that they still would not be able to rescue Rogue once they needed her. And yet, they attempt to rescue her anyway, and are successful (as far as we know).

You could say that the X-Men are just being cold, calculating, and strategic. They may need to be this way in order to survive against the Sentinels.

Okay, that is a fair argument. But if the X-Men no longer have their ideals, then what is the point of their organization? If they do not take care of the people they care about, why do they even exist? Are they really nothing more than refugees?

Finally, I would like you to recall Magneto in the original X-Men. He kidnaps Rogue, straps her to a machine that uses her powers, and leaves her to die. Magneto does not want to kill Rogue, he has nothing against her personally. He is merely using her, because he needs her power.  In the extended cut of the film, Rogue has been kidnapped, but the X-Men do not care, until they need her powers.

I assumed that Magneto had joined the X-Men in this film because he had decided to confirm to their ideals. It turns out, it was the other way around. Perhaps that could be interesting, maybe the film would have been an examination of the X-Men slowly losing their morality. However, considering how little screen time was devoted to the future in the theatrical version, I am seriously doubting this was going to be explored in any capacity.

Do you agree with my assessment of X-Men: Days of Future Past? Do you disagree? Let me know in the comments!

We just have to wait and see until that extended cut is released, although the extended cut should have been released along side the theatrical cut instead of waiting for another year.

I will say one thing X-men DOFP did which is a cardinal sin for a movie with time travel that is going to have a sequel. They showed us the future we know that Cyclops, Jean Grey, Prof X, Beast, Wolverine, and Storm are all fine and perfectly healthy nothing happens to them. So their sequel has lost any and all stakes for everyone of these characters they can't be killed or maimed in anyway and if they are then you know it is a lie and they will show up again in a sequel perfectly healthy.

Actually I believe that originally the Sentinel's powers to adapt/ absorb powers come from Rogue, not Mystique; but then Hunger Games >>> True Blood, and Jennifer Lawrence >>> Anna Paquin, so Fox decided to change something up and make money out of it.

At least this difference from the source material did not set up a lot of people, like some other change made by a certain really successful CBM company...

@dethpillow

The issue would be though that if anything did happen to the characters and it was permanent be it something like death then Singer lied to us with that scene from the future or it doesn't happen and X-men DOFP was supposed to fix up the Fox X-men timeline.

@pesmerga44

u forgot one key thing about time travel, my sexual beast:
alternate.
realities.

OHHHHH yaaaaaaaa.

see the future wolverine woke up to, is, I guess u can say the Original trilogy timeline that was fixed.

and apocalypse is going to be the Other reality,
the one that the first class cast is in.

But Cinnamon!!
its supposed to Be the same timeline, just in the past!!
well hold up now, dog.
no it aint.
by traveling back in time, we saw the original trilogies cast in the 70's.
so, DOFP does not at all feature the new "first class" personas.

...yes I just blew your mind with my spices.

apocalypse will be the First sequel to first class,
while DOFP is the 4th and final of the original x-trilogy.
get it? DOFP xmen in 1970's were 70's version of original trilogy,
first class version is alternate timeline and will have apocalypse in the sequel.

so cinnamon, ur saying the dystopian future we saw in DOFP was already set to happen in xmen 1-3?
yes. its totes possible mystique killed trask successfully in those movies and all the sentinel future was already being cooked up. the dystopian future was always the future for the original trilogy.
BOOM.
MASHED POTATOES IN YO FACE!!!

You sexual deviant little kitty X-men DOFP was supposed to fix the continuity errors in the Fox X-men universe and now you are saying it is creating more then what was the point of X-men DOFP.

to Fix the original trilogy and tie it up with a bow, homie.
now we get the first class cast in apocalypse that is also recasting younger versons of scott and jean.
new. timeline.

I don't think it works that way. If First Class is a different timeline than the first X-Men movie, then there would be no point in sending Wolverine to the past. Wolverine's actions in an alternate timeline wouldn't solve the Sentinel problem in his timeline.

I'm not totally happy with the ending of DOFP or with the Fox-Men, but I liked DOFP and I think Apocalypse is going to be cool, I really don't like the Wolverine bone claw thing either or the Mystique/Stryker thing.... But I don't think they committed a sin with the ending....

We didn't see Quicksilver or Gambit at the end of DOFP so they could still die, and I'm glad they didn't kill off Cyclops, they made that mistake in X-Men The Last Stand, maybe, and it's a big maybe, they will finally do him justice....

The end of DOFP also shows that we might actually get The Phoenix Saga that we deserve because Jean Grey is Alive, which is cool, because that story could be amazing on screen.

But, yeah, the ending also doesn't show Juggernaut, Magneto, etc, etc....

Maybe Magneto dies!! Who knows, there are still stakes

There's more characters in the X-Men movies than the ones at the mansion, that's all I'm saying.... And just because they don't die doesn't mean Apocalypse doesn't [frick] shit up

wolverine was sent to the 70's of the original casts timeline.
not the first class timeline.
prof.x, magneto, and mystique always looked like mcavoy, fassbender and jlaw in the past.
boom. more mashed potatoes.

Nah, man. First Class was originally supposed to be a reboot/different timeline, but Bryan Singer/FOX stepped in and made it one timeline. Candied Yams.

@DrKinsolving

Didn't say I didn't like X-men DOFP all I am saying is that all the characters I mentioned now have perfect plot armor against anything happening to them. Of course there are other characters that could die but it doesn't help that before the movie is even in production we know exactly who can't die. If anything does happen to these characters then the ending to X-men DOFP was bullshit and why the hell did Singer put it in the first place.
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 11:21 AM
@pesmerga44

True, I mean unless they end up traveling back in time again and fixing the past all over again, haha. Not only that I want those characters alive in Apocalypse because this is an X-Men movie, and those characters especially Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Prof X.... Killing them off would kind of suck because they've never been developed very well in the movies, with the exception of Wolverine and Prof X....

But, they could get killed off in the sequel to Apocalypse.... If it takes place after the ending of DOFP

When exactly does that last scene (Ending of DOFP) take place anyway, how far into the future? Would that be X-Men 3 era
pesmerga44
pesmerga44 - 1/9/2015, 11:29 AM
@DrKinsolving

I am guessing the exact same time they were fighting the sentinels in the future right before they killed Kitty. Right at that moment the timeline was changed and became a peaceful world with no sentinel program.
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 11:32 AM
@pesmerga44

Actually if you think about it even further, just having Apocalypse in the 1980's means that these characters wouldn't die anyway. Because even if DOFP didn't happen, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Prof X, etc.... They were still alive at the beginning of X-Men 3....

So, even without DOFP we already knew those characters wouldn't die in Apocalypse of in the 1980s

@DrKinsolving

That means even more characters have plot armor if that is true it means Magneto and Mystique have the plot armor too. I always saw X-men DOFP to be a complete universe rebooter like J.J. Abram's Star Trek movie was. Changing the timeline in the past means everything is changed so everything not called X-men First Class is gone but of course it does leave the issue of the supposed Wolverine sequel.

@dethpillow

I thought since the timeline changed Kitty was no longer sending Wolverine's mind to the past so his consciousness just returned to his future body. Not that he lived through everything until he returned to the future.

@dethpillow

Really, thanks, seriously, this movie timeline is confusing as [frick] for me, haha

And, I think Wolverine waking up in horror would have been way better. Personally, I walked out of the theatre thinking so Wolverine is happy? What the [frick], did Weapon X ever happen and then the whole Mystique/Stryker thing is even more confusing because if Weapon X did happen does that mean Mystique just enjoyed torturing the [frick] out of Wolverine, haha....

Then ending actually took a lot away from the movie for me, but I understand why they did it
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 12:09 PM
@pesmerga44

True, like I said, it's confusing as hell for me, because I know they kept some of the stuff from the old movies

Like Jean and Cyclops still did die, because Wolverine is so happy to see Scott and Jean at the ending.... Jean is also mentioned in the Wolverine and the fact that she dies is part of the story.... That's why I thought X-Men 3 was still canon

It's just a confusing mess....
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 1:38 PM
@dethpillow

Yeah man, so maybe that's still canon, or at least was still canon until DOFP, I don't really know.

I liked DOFP but if I think to much about the old movies I get a head ache, ha
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 1:40 PM
And I mean the old, old movies, I thought First Class was cool too

Still not the X-Men though.... I really hope they do something special with Cyclops and Jean in Apocalypse, Their both such cool characters
DrKinsolving
DrKinsolving - 1/9/2015, 1:59 PM
@dethpillow

Yeah, X-Men 1 was cool, especially for it's time

I actually thought the Sabertooth scene was really cool too, similar to the comics, how Wolverine is just trying to live his life and Sabertooth jumps in out of now where.

It's also crazy how dedicated Jackman is to the role, he must be on GH or something, the amount of muscle he gained between films is ridiculous.

Still, and not everyone agrees with this, but when the time comes, I'm really excited for a new Wolverine, hopefully a shorter and even more animalistic Wolverine.

@DrKinsolvig, i believe when wolverine wakes up in the future he is just having trouble reconciling his two timelines as opposed to the other wolvie consciosness being erased. Its like his mind is split in two, where he remembers both series of events but not readily at the exact moment of the other conciousness' entrance. Proff X will help him reconcile and he will remember both or slowly start to forget the original timeline
