X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Writer Simon Kinberg Reveals Shocking Mystique/Azazel Twist

Fox's X-Men movies never really adhered to the comic books, and X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg has now revealed a shocking twist which never actually made it to the big screen...

X-Men: First Class served as a loose prequel to the original X-Men movies, hence why it utilised some lesser-known characters from the comic books. Among them was Azazel who, in the comic books, was revealed to be Nightcrawler's father following a brief relationship with Mystique. That romance isn't something Matthew Vaughn's movie explored, while Kurt Wagner's parentage was later ignored.

By the time X-Men: Days of Future Past was released in 2014, Azazel had been killed off screen, while Jennifer Lawrence becoming a top star in Hollywood turned Mystique into the franchise's anti-hero lead.

During a recent interview with IGN, Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinberg dropped a shocking reveal when he explained that he and Bryan Singer had made a big change to the source material; in this world, Azazel wasn't Mystique's lover or Nightcrawler's father; instead, he was Mystique's father!

"There's Azazel," Kinberg said, talking about the autopsy photographs Mystique discovers, "Who we know is her dad, but she never gets to learn that."

This is a major unexpected twist, and a big change to the source material. Still, Fox's X-Men movies always shook things up (for better or worse), so we probably shouldn't be too surprised by this.

How do you guys feel about Azazel being Mystique's secret father in the X-Men Universe?

Kingberg is just bullshitting now, cause i clearly remember him saying that they wanted to reveal that Raven was pregnant with Azazel's child (Kurt).

Not that it matters now, but still...

@Doomsday8888 - Like seriously why is he coming up with this? They had a great setup with Kurt/Raven/Azazel, why ruin that now?

I’m happy this wasn’t in the movie. It makes no sense... also implies incest?

Not that I like or agree with this ,but it doesn't imply incest you weirdos. It implies that nightcrawler gets his powers or his genetic makeup was passed down a different way. This implies that nightcrawlers dad was a nobody which in my eyes is the bigger problem. What while Raven was running around the 70s trying to save the world she....got knocked up and abandoned a baby??? And we totally just glazed over and never mentioned it in the movies just expected the common moviegoer to get it???? I hate Krinberg it's like a guy keeps vomiting actual poop and people keep paying him for it

Its the reason why I always say I'm glad Fox Studios will NEVER make a X-Men or Wolverine movie ever again. I never felt like I ever saw the X-Men. One or two good movies can't fix the damage they did. Fox Studios took the WB approach to making X-Men and Wolverine movies and mostly failed.

So glad Kinberg won't get to [frick] with the X-Men anymore. All of his ideas are bad. All of his execution is bad. All of his everything is ass. Go "produce" some more.

I remember reading that the X-Men Origins game or something made Wraith as Nightcrawler's dad, which made no sense at the time. But if Azazel was at least his grandfather then maybe that could have worked.

I'm pretty sure that game wasn't canon, but who knows - maybe the idea was inspired by some ideas thrown around by the movie's writers (which I wouldn't put past them...) and passed down.

Well that’s a stupid ass twist for no reasons. So glad these people aren’t in charge of the X-men anymore.

Good thing that the existing and potential connections between most characters were so utterly meaningless that it's completely irrelevant when they changed stuff like that.

I remember being so excited watching the 1st X-Men film. I never thought I would see a character like Cyclops or Storm in live-action (even though I thought Fox missed the mark not casting Angela Bassett as Ororo). I'm a huge X-Men fan but I forgave a lot on that first film, like, why is Iceman with the younger students & not an active member.

But as years went on I waited for some continuity to comic canon and it never happened. Was there a hint that Mystique was Nightcrawler's mother? I can't remember. Kitty Pryde replaced Rachel, with mysterious new powers in Days of Future Past. Havok was now older than Scott, his brother by 2 plus decades. Pietro Maximoff is now American, renamed as Peter & has a personality adjustment from the comics. His sister (Wanda) is hardly an afterthought and not a twin. It was frustrating to see how Bryan Singer, the other directors & producers & Fox just trashed comic continuity to fit whatever their story narrative at the moment was. So not surprised at all, that Kinberg now says Azarel is Mystique's father as a matter of fact & totally ignoring his Nightcrawler connection.

X-Men is great, not only for its analogy & diversity but because their characters have very deep interrelationships in the comics. X-Men in the films bared no resemblance to the comics. That is why Fox failed the franchise and its fans. I hated everything about the films starting with X-Men 3 & when I saw Marvel Studios doing so much a better with the superheroes they controlled the rights to.

I just thank God every day that Fox never had a chance to ruin Alpha Flight, my favorite X-Men related team. One day when Marvel Studios adapts any of those characters into live-action I am confident they will be considered with care & at least feel like the characters I loved back when I was a kid.

@String - I hear you, but I think it's better to not hold the comics/source material, to such a high pedestal. Especially with the X-Men comics, where writers & editorial, have played fast and loose with continuity so much. As far as I've seen, Marvel has never done anything consistently good with the Mystique/Nightcrawler mother/son relationship. It's always felt to me like more of a footnote. Interesting character background trivia.

But no doubt, the FoX-Menverse definitely botched Mystique's individual storyline. They could've done a lot more cooler things with her, when J-Law took over the role.

Maybe that would've explained that shot from the first trailere where Mystique was seen crying, she must've found out while she was at that HQ from the military that acted as a mausoleum for some of the mutants that were killed like Angel's wings. I don't remember that scene making it to the cut of the movie,

I’m so glad this universe is now dead, while I loved it when it started and I even kinda enjoyed the rough X3 and forgave the terrible Wolverine Origins but the last 2 have definitely killed my enjoyment of the Fox-Men.
