Youngblood Still In Script Phase!

Youngblood Still In Script Phase!

So says Brett Ratner! This project was in Script Phase 9 months ago, so what gives?

Brett Ratner, not to be confused with Bill Shatner, is saying that Youngblood is still in a sort of developmental hell.

"I'm working on the script," Ratner told MTV News. "'Youngblood will be something I do in the future, whether it's next year or whatever."

"I'm never going to do another 'X-Men' obviously, and I'm not doing any more with 'Rush Hour,'" he explained. "But to do a new franchise, I don't care what the budget is, even if it was small, but it would be exciting because then I could start my own franchise. I could do what Bryan Singer did with 'X-Men.'"

This is the same tune he sung about 9 months ago. So to me this sounds like this project is stuck in a "No distributor funk" meaning Brett has no studio to back Youngblood up. I could be way off and totally wrong but if a certain studio thought this movie was going to be the next 'Big Franchise' then I'm certain that some studio somewhere would have picked this project up and gave it the green light.

More from Ratner:

"I've been in a lot of things – 'God of War,' which didn't work out, 'Conan the Barbarian,' which didn't work out," Ratner continued. "So I'm interested in comic books. I grew up reading comic books. Even though all the rumors said, 'Oh, Brett didn't read comics,' but I read 'Batman' and 'Superman.' 'Superman' was my favorite comic, which is why I was first attached to make 'Superman.' 'Youngblood,' obviously, I discovered later in life and I just fell in love with it."

Somehow I think this article turned into the 'Brett Ratner Fail List'! How many strikes does one get before they are out?

What about that fun Robert Pattinson/Youngblood rumor that surfaced last year? Brett tried to clear the air by saying:

"I was just throwing a name out there because he was hot," Brett said. "When we get the script, then I'm going to go to the best actor for the role."

Talk about back peddling!

Won't get made. To many wheels spinnin' and the characters not well known to the general public.

Ratner is shit for having made plenty of bad movies (save one, the "Family Man" fluke. Had it not been for its brilliant plot and for the actors playing themselves, it would have stunk up a storm). He's not talented no matter what he had to work with. This film idea is as shitty as its source. I hope it does not get made.

ugh, Ratner and Liefeld. What a team up. Where are they going to find actors with such (FUNNED!) up anatomy? I also hope that they never show anyone's feet and that there is always a low lying cloud of smoke.

@MultiPurposePoni

yes the movie grossed $459,359,555 worldwide but heres a thing X-Men 3 ride of the success of the previous movies. big grossed movie does not mean its a good movie. if thats the case everyone loved X-Men Origins: Wolverine, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, etc.

@LEEE777

sorry but SLJ as SHAFT is better then shaft in Youngblood.

@Poni I concur whole heartedly If you look at the position Marvel was in at the time they were basically making consessions because the properties were all licsensed to the evil corporate Hollywood studios which are still fronts for the darker more sinister mega-conglomorates. Its ironic now that Marvel merging with Disney seems to be allowing Marvel to control the end product better but if you view how each project came out, starting with the obscure character, Blade and successively building on the other properties we are really seeing the comic movie revolution. TDK didn't huet the cause either becasue it really shook off the sterotypes of what a comicbook movie can be. I think that since X Men is still tainted with FOX and they have already established the franchise as it is we are doomed to what is the FOX/Singer movie X-verse. I tell you what would be freaking awesome though, an askani'son/cable/Xforce trilogy! They could use James Marsden and Famke and just play it of that they don't actually die in X3 but are transported to the future to raise the son they were supposed to have. I mean everyone knows once you start messing with the old space/time continuum anything is possible!

AngryRob- HA!!! *snort*

Multi- Well i wasn't a fan of Red Rocket and the Flush Hour movies that much. I mean, they had their moments but as a whole... the first one was near decent and Red as well. Family Man was grand though.

However, i will agree with you about the fact that FOX is the anti-christ and that Ratner was just a feeble minded pawn.

i agree about FOX. whats surprise me that Fox Searchlight the independent division of 20th Century Fox does better with their product. the problem with FOX is that they run by lawyers who think they know everything about how a comic book movie should be.

@LEEE777

i think u lost it cause u keep on riding on SLJ for a short scene he did in Iron Man 2 really LEEE777.

The large box office grossing doesn't always ensure that a large number of people liked the film. Advertising and hype usually get the grossing up higher anyway.

And you asked why everybody hates on Ratner. I think you've answered your own question several times already. Ratner just took the paycheck, not caring about the story. He said blatantly to fans of the comics that he didn't care what they thought about the movie, years after he got paid for the film. An act of an asshole imo. Fox may have been the company to produce that crapfest, not caring about the script, but at the end of the day, Ratner was the director. He could of changed the story if he actually cared, and if Fox wouldn't of allowed him to, he could have easily backed out the project.

But he copped out for money. He made a crappy movie, knowing it was crappy, and didn't care. If he truly thought the script was good, then he was an even bigger loser for not noticing how lame a script like that was.

You also mentioned that Singer had done way worse than Ratner, by leaving the X-men franchise to destroy the Superman franchise. While this is debatable, comparison is beyond the point. Whether he did worse or better than Singer, X-3 was a lousy movie, fueled by a lousy plot that was approved by a director who made clear that he didn't care about the final product or what people thought of it.

I think that's more than enough reasons as to why people on this site, or in general, dislike Ratner.

if u have issue with SLJ short scene in Iron Man 2 then you should take it up with the writter. if you dont like his acting well u have not seen much of his other movies i.e. 187, A Time to Kill, Eve's Bayou.

I think ratner did the best he could wit bad material...y would he turn down directing this movie if it garentees him millions of dollars??..ppl go on tv everyday making asses outta themselves for far less...singer would hav been directing off the same script so it woulda turned out jus as sh!tty...besides..superman returns was waaayyyy f**king worse than x-men 3!...ratner has put out alotta decent movies...rush hour franchise..red dragon...family man...all big at the box office..including x-3...so 4 u saying he sux..the majority of ppl out there disagree...
the same goes 4 iefeld...when he did x-force..it was the bggest title at the time...when he did youngblood...that sh!t was sold out everywhere...u guys jus sound like fairweather fans..u like it when its hot..but as soon as the popular vote is it sux..thats what u say 2...so lame! :)

XmutantX- Actually, Singer has the habit of rewriting everything to his liking so i doubt that he would have kept the same exact script that Ratner worked with. IMO, X1 & X2 weren't "shit". Even though Singer didn't follow the source, at least he put his own passion into his work and made decent self standing films. I respect that far more than just doing the job, taking the check and cashing it. Superman Returns was a shitty adaptation but still a decent film on its own and a good continuation to an already crappy franchise. It definitely wasn't the Superman film any of us wanted but i found it as enjoyable as X1 & X2. X3 wasn't as bad as most fans make it out to be for an ending chapter but as a stand alone film it lacked a bit, i found.

IMO, Vaughn did the "respectable" thing. Not Ratner. I don't know what the hell Vaughn is thinking in regards to First Class but lets all hope FOX has learned a lesson with WO and X3... other than the fact that they can milk a turd.

XmutantX - 5/12/2010, 11:28 AM
yea..but everything he re-writes is garbage...jus look at superman...the original was writtin by JJ Abrams..and was goin 2 be directed by mcG...that movie would hav kicked major ass!...but he came in and re-wrote a JJ Abrams script??..now thats jus stupid my friend!
yea and lets see u turn down multimillion dollar contract 2 be a fill in director HAH!

hold on you guys like JJ Abrams script for Superman i swear Lex Luther was going to be a Kryptonian in his version. i would not expect Lex as a Kryptonian.

oh another thing Michael Dougherty who wrote X2 said their version for X-Men 3 would be closer to the comics plus it would of focus on Cyclops. he mention it on slashfilm Podcast. heres the podcast of him mentioning his version of X-Men 3

@Multi

As I mentioned above, If Ratner truly did believe that X-3's script was good, then I do pity him for being that blind. He didn't even have to be a fan of the comics to notice the lack of character development for the many new characters tossed in for the hell of it, or the useless subplots that did nothing for the overall story, or the deaths of characters that were essential to being a good X-Men movie.

Honestly, it makes him look more like a tool for defending something so crappy, and then blaming the fans reactions of the movie on the fans themselves.

Even if this was what you were expecting out of him, that doesn't mean that his actions were any less douchey.

Is it really so surprising as to why so many hate on him?

XmutantX - 5/12/2010, 12:07 PM
mario@ yea...but if he was only making a movie 2 sell 2 the fans...it wouldnt hav grossed even half of what it did...movies r made 4 a much wider audience...4 a pg-13 movie..they hav 2 make it apeal 2 13 yearolds and up...theres ppl who dont even kno what an x-man is...its only the true fans that culd find the flaws...it grossed the most outta the 3...that says it all...u can say he's a tool all u want..all of u can..but ur not lookin at it from a realistic point of view..jus a biased over popular one
jazz@ yea well we saw where the mnore "accurate" script got us didnt we :)

I honestly wasn't a fan of Abrams' script for Superman but there's no way it could have been worse than Singer's. Singer's talent i would say is in storyboarding. As for writing... too many brainfarts. He shoots a hell of a great thrill ride though, you gotta give him that. But he shoild never be alowed to write.

Numbers and awards don't mean dick when it comes down to making a great stand alone "film". Avatar was a great "experience" but a bad "film". FOX wanted to close the trilogy with a bang and Ratner only wanted the money. That's what made X3 what it was. The general movie going audience loved the "epicness" of it in terms of the climax of the series and so they forked over the money (as they did with Avatar's 3D extravaganza with no substance). It still doesn't make it a great "film". Most people will always want "bang for their buck", which is why the best structured and well developed motion pictures will always be ignored.

@xmutantx

A comicbookmovie can be faithful to the fans of the comics and STILL make tons of money and garner good critical reception. Are you to tell me that if X-3 had a better story that would've made fans happy, it would have made LESS money?

Iron Man was a very faithful cbm to the comics it was based on, got great reception from the fans and general audience alike, and made tons of money.

And box office grossing has almost NOTHING to do with how good a movie actually is. Just look at Spiderman 3 or Transformers 2.

There's nothing wrong with making a CBM that fans of the source material and the general audience can both appreciate.
