F9: THE FAST SAGA Briefly Awarded "Rotten" Status Despite Breaking Records At The Global Box Office

Last night, F9: The Fast Saga was briefly awarded the dreaded "Rotten" status on Rotten Tomatoes, and while it's now back to being "Fresh," it seems critics are divided despite strong box office numbers.

This might be an analogy only our UK readers will get, but it seems fair to say the Fast & Furious franchise has become like Marmite: you either love it or hate it.

Critics also appear to be divided, as the latest instalment, F9: The Fast Saga, slipped into the dreaded "Rotten" status last night on Rotten Tomatoes. Luckily for the movie, a few more reviews have since been counted, and it's now "Fresh" at 60%. However, should it drop a percentage point or two, it'll once again be in "Rotten" territory.

"F9 sends the franchise hurtling further over the top than ever," reads the Critics Consensus, "but director Justin Lin's knack for preposterous set pieces keeps the action humming."

Despite this mixed response to the blockbuster, it has broken box office records over the weekend with a $70 million debut. That's the biggest opening of the pandemic era, while it also scored the highest-grossing opening weekend since 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Behind F9 this past weekend were A Quiet Place Part II and The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard.

While everyone seems happy that the big screen experience has returned, critics clearly aren't getting caught up in the excitement and praising movies just because they've seen them in a theater.

We'll keep you updated on what happens with F9's Rotten Tomatoes score, but we're sure you'll be more interested in Black Widow's. The review embargo for the Marvel Studios movie lifts at 9am PT today, so you'll want to check back here then for our spoiler-free verdict on the movie.

It’s as if Rotten Tomatoes rating has no effect on the movie’s success. Who would’ve thought !

@Cap1 - To be fair just a few months ago people were quite insistent how RT's score proved a movie's quality.

@Reeds2Much - and those people were as wrong then as they are now, esp for franchise like F&F

If you go to see this movie you know what to expect so RT is of no consequence whatsoever.

Did anyone actually expect this movie too be good though?

At this point, the Fast & Furious franchise has become the staple of (for some reason self-serious) story serving as one big excuse for over-the-top action.

What's the problem here? We're post transformers here. The actual quality of a movie doesn't necessarily have anything to do with its success. Especially since theaters are starting to open up and people are hungry for a big blockbuster.

F9 is fun for alot of people and people were asking it to go crazier so we shouldn't be shocked that it did. I'm glad there are people out there that are enjoying it even those I'm not a fan. I'm actually kinda worried about Black Widow after reading some to the reactions.

I unironically love how insane this movie is. It's stupid in all the best ways. Are the laws of physics, biology, and common sense broken beyond repair in this film? Hell yes! And it's great.
