We know that the Fast & Furious franchise is nearing its end, though it's hard to believe the IP will remain on the shelf for long given what a box office draw the series has been for Universal Pictures.

Could Tenet director Christopher Nolan be the one who reboots it? While the filmmaker lists the likes of Stanley Kubrick and Michael Mann among his inspirations, it appears he appreciates a good popcorn flick as well. Talking on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast, the prolific director shared his love of the Fast & Furious movies.

"I’m sort of an original recipe [guy]; I mean, the Rob Cohen original, but I’ve got a very soft spot for Tokyo Drift actually," Nolan confessed. "And then the skill as Justin Lin’s iterations, as they got crazier and bigger and crazier and bigger, they became something else, but something else kind of fun."

"The fun thing about those movies is, even as they’ve gotten bigger and bigger and bigger, as sequels have to do, everyone always complains that sequels get bigger but we’re the people making sequels get bigger, we do want them bigger," he continued. "You don’t want them smaller. It’s the Alien 3 lesson that Fincher learned. You can do it but it’s not going to make anybody happy, even though personally I love that film, a lot more than he does in fact."

So, a Fast & Furious fan and one of the few people out there who loved Alien 3. We're certainly learning a lot about Nolan during the pandemic, though his hatred of HBO Max is perhaps most noteworthy.

Do you think Nolan would be a good fit for Fast & Furious or, failing that, a new Alien movie?

@Imfunnyhow - Saw it not too long ago. Enjoyed it, but very confusing. And it's apparent Nolan didn't give af about character depth in this one.

Nolan probably like most people, watches films for entertainment.
Sometimes you want something heavy that is a masterpiece, other times you want something fun and breezy.

@SimplyAz -

my guess is that he is not that great at choreography in his movies
therefore
when he sees great stuns in other movies,
like the rest of us,
he gets excited.

@Equivocal -

Perhaps but then it could just be he enjoys silly movies. If it was a choreography thing I'd be more inclined to agree if he said he was a massive martial arts movie fan

Fast and Furious, Transformers and the Rock's flicks are the worst cinema action movies, imo.

And sequels don't have to be always bigger, they should be deeper and more evolving the characters (Age of Ultron is a great example of too many characters).

@DARKSIDEIS - im just not a fan of where they became. It started out as a street racing spin on point break. But very quickly it became more about spies and international politics. Not to mention their theme of "family" in later movies, which is little more than an excuse to claim character relationships without actually showing much. Dom just says family then suddenly its like you've always been a part of it. It gets the most ridiculous in the latest movie, where dom heavily relies and trusts the Shaw brothers, who've never been shown as anything other than antagonistic despite the fact brian is literally family and is still alive in this universe.

You’re right, I do want my sequels bigger, unless your name is Jon Watts
