INDIANA JONES 5 Rumored To Be Setting The Stage For The Franchise's New Lead - SPOILERS

A very interesting new rumour is doing the rounds about Indiana Jones 5, and we may now know what Lucasfilm's future plans for the franchise are. Needless to say, this could be controversial to some...

James Mangold's Indiana Jones 5 is expected to serve as the conclusion of Harrison Ford's time as the beloved adventurer, but what comes next for the franchise? It's hard to imagine it being shelved indefinitely, especially with Disney in charge (which has been the case since they acquired Lucasfilm several years ago).

Now, Mail Online has shared a very interesting rumour that we're sure at least some fans won't be happy about. According to the site, Phoebe Waller-Bridge is being eyed to take over from Ford as the new face of Indiana Jones. Apparently, she plays Indy's assistant in this fifth instalment, but the Fleabag star would then become the franchise's first female lead in future movies.

The site notes that, "Insiders claim Kathleen Kennedy, the Hollywood producer behind the franchise, is keen to make 'big, bold' changes – with few bigger than switching the lead character to a woman." One source adds, "It would be a huge statement, and a great role for Phoebe."

It's certainly an intriguing prospect; after all, the only other real option for the franchise is to either do a total reboot or head into the past with a new actor filling in some gaps in the character's history.

Replacing Ford would be no easy feat for an actor (we saw that in Solo: A Star Wars Story), so someone else taking centre stage makes sense. Waller-Bridge has received heaps of praise for her work behind and in front of the camera, so this could be a rumour that's well worth keeping an eye on.

How would you feel about this big change to Indiana Jones

@ThorArms - You cannot replace Harrison Ford. River Phoenix is dead. If you want to make Tomb Raider movies, go buy the rights. You have all the money.

Solo was actually decent, and had the Star Wars name attached to it, and it didn't work because you cannot replace Harrison Ford. He is unique. It cannot be done.

@BackwardGalaxy - I agree but playing devil’s advocate, if one wanted to make a similar movie, Alan Quatermain is public domain. So they can make the next Indy a female, a black female, a dog that talks but only Nazis hear him, and we just have to watched our hero’s legacy burn out

I mean, what other reason would they make an Indy 5? We already had Old Man Indy in Crystal Skull.

@HulkisHorny - The whole point of Crystal Skull was to set up Shia LaDouche as the new Indy. And it even ended with a very heavy handed hint that he would be the new Indy movie forward.

But people hated the idea. So now they're doing it again, only with a female this time?

I swear, they just can't let a franchise die, can they?

@PapaSpank54 - a female lead is fine, but I’ll be damned if we get a damn bird to be headlining an Indy film!!!!
