INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY Spoilers - Is Phoebe Waller-Bridge Positioned To Lead The Franchise?

There was a lot of speculation that Phoebe Waller-Bridge was cast as the female lead in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny so she could take over from Indy, but is that the case? Find out here...

As soon as it was announced that Phoebe Waller-Bridge had been cast as the female lead in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, speculation began to run rampant that Disney/Lucasfilm were planning to introduce her character, Helena Shaw, to take over from Harrison Ford as the hero of the franchise.

So, does it happen? Spoilers ahead!

First off, no, Shaw is not positioned as the "female Indiana Jones" in any way. Though the characters do share some similarities (she is also a clever and resourceful archaeologist with a kid sidekick, for example), Indy's god-daughter is a lot more ruthless and money-motivated than the legendary adventurer... at least, at first.

Shaw's arc does eventually bring her to the realization that there's more to life than "fortune and glory," and she seemingly decides to stay in Jones and Marion's (Karen Allen) lives at the end of the movie.

As for Waller-Bridge taking over as the lead of the franchise, we don't see it happening. Even if The Dial of Destiny dropped a few hints that this might be on the cards (and it doesn't), director James Mangold has already made it clear that he has no interest in making a "Helena Shaw and the..." movie.

Of course, if this film proves to be a big enough hit, that decision could be out of his hands, but we'd say it's highly unlikely.

Ford has confirmed that he has hung up the iconic fedora for good, which means Doctor Henry "Indiana" Jones - and his franchise - have almost certainly retired.

Do you plan on seeing The Dial of Destiny this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

The movie also stars Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), and Ethann Isidore (Mortel).

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has worked on each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, once again composed the score.

will either not get made or not make money

People arent going to be interested in Indiana Jones without Indiana Jones

Even Speilberg failed to get a Mutt spin off made

This would be the equivalent of if Nolan kept his batman trilogy going but switched focus to john blake

No, not all. The movie does not position her for any spin-off movies.

This argument has been created so people can get all upset about the idea of the lead in the franchise being gender swapped.

The character she plays is in no way comparable to Indy’s character.

I liked her in the movie. They are not continuing the franchise with her.

@philinterrupted - Facts be damned. If enough pissy fan boys say it's true, then OF COURSE it is. I saw people on here screaming the movie ends with Indy erased from history and Helena's been Indy ALL ALONG! 🤪🙄

@philinterrupted - she could be a annoying at times but I think she won me over in the end. When Indy wants to stay. Honestly it was a pretty damn good Indy film I'm ngl.

@McMurdo - she was supposed to be annoying. That was the character.

I only saw it once. I think it may be slightly worse than Crystal Skull.

This plays in my head every time I see her.

No one but fan boys ever said she was going to lead anything. She was the sidekick in THIS film. I enjoyed the film and enjoyed her in it, so tomato, tomahto, I guess. Of course, absolutely NONE of the rumors about this movie were even close to correct, as usual. People build themselves into a fury about a movie that was never actually going to happen. Then sh*t on it anyway, seems to be the pattern. Your right to think what you like but always the same hooey from the same clowns. People seem to be put off by the movie heavily leaning into Indy being elderly and alone. I get it. I would have made the backstory lighter myself, but blame Ford and Mangold for that if you have too. Ford made the movie he wanted to make.

@IAmIronGland -
That's a silly take, all of the rumors about this movie were proven true including the original ending that leaked. We know for a fact she was intended to take over from him. We also know she was characterized entirely to mock and insult him, to degrade him while the script is intended to lift her up. She defeats the villain. She saves Indi from effectively suiciding himself in the past. She stops Indi breaking the timeline.

The actress has also publicly stated they intend to do a something regarding her character

@Scarilian - you take that quote as her confirming there were plans?

That clearly reads as someone who’s not shutting the door on any possibility what so ever. She’s more commenting on wanting to see a female action lead.
“ So I do think there’s room for a slightly clumsier, bruised, limping female action star, maybe, in the future.”

I take that quote along with how she's yet another Kathleen Kennedy style insert character, similar to Rey.

We already have reports that an 'untitled Indiana Jones Series' set following Indiana Jones & The Dial of Destiny is meant to be releasing.

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/indiana-jones-series-disney-plus-1235416179/

Clearly it's not going to follow Harrison Ford - so it'd have to be a character established in that film - of which the only option is Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Helen Shaw.

@Scarilian - “The Mouse House and Lucasfilm have specifically been bringing up the possibility of a streaming show set in the world of the globe trotting archaeologist in general meetings with writers of late, sources say. They are still looking for a writer to take on the project, thus no plot details are available. Given that, it is unknown if a series would serve as a prequel to or spinoff of the film franchise, or if it would tie into the upcoming fifth Indiana Jones film, similar to how Disney has tied its Marvel shows on Disney+ into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

There’s nothing in that article that would give you anything to go off. You’re filling in the gaps with your outrage for the possibility of a female lead.
Come back to me when you actually have facts and not fiction or what if’s.

I'm not outraged because I'm apathetic. I checked out the Indiana Jones franchise with Crystal Skull and instead focus on the actually good films, the original core trilogy.

If you want to ignore the original script, filming, leaks and in general how Disney have handled franchises in the last decade then feel free, but I'm not going to bother you if your head is in the sand and all you are doing is trying desperately to call me sexist in response, lol.

Nah, I'm good. Others who actually understand the process behind this film are more suitable to engage with and less desperate to call people sexist, lmfao. I'm sure you'll find someone else to play with.

The movie was fun, but it also really kind of sucked. The end got me to cry, and I really enjoyed Mads Mikkelson, but Helena was a really unlikeable character. The movie on the whole just didn’t feel very necessary. I look forward to watching it again, but at the comfort of my home. There was a bunch in the movie that made me tilt my head, so to speak.
IAmIronGland
IAmIronGland - 6/30/2023, 6:46 PM
@MosquitoFarmer - I sort of agree but much more to like than not for me. Helena was very much a pseudo villain for much of the film before fully coming around. I liked and disliked her at points which to me means it was a good performance. I also wish the back story wasn't so grim but Ford and Mangold wanted to make THIS movie, so be it. It did end hopefully with Indy realizing he does still have everything he needs, I felt. I had no issue with the time travel macguffin. It worked for THIS movie and it made it clear that people can't just time hop willy nilly. Hope people give it a shot.
