INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY Spoilers - Is Shia LaBeouf's Mutt Williams In The Movie?

Though it does have its share of defenders, The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is generally considered to be the worst Indiana Jones movie (will it be replaced by The Dial of Destiny?), so nobody was too broken up when we learned that Shia LaBeouf would not be reprising the role of Mutt Williams.

Introduced as the son of Indy (Harrison Ford) and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), it was widely assumed that LaBeouf's character would ultimately take up his father's iconic fedora if the franchise was to continue. Of course, that never happened, and Ford will still be going strong as the legendary archaeologist/adventurer in James Mangold's The Dial of Destiny.

The Logan director has previously confirmed that we will find out what became of Mutt, and, sure enough, the character's fate is revealed in an emotional scene between Indy and Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller Bridge).

Major spoilers follow.

As our heroes search for the second half of Archimedes' dial, aka the Antikythera, Helena asks her godfather where he would go if he did manage to use the dial to travel back in time. Jones says he would go back and prevent his son from enlisting just to "piss him off", before revealing that Mutt was killed in the Vietnam War. Williams' death then resulted in Indy and Marion's marriage breaking down.

As offscreen deaths go, it's really not a bad send-off for a character nobody was particularly attached to!

Do you plan on seeing The Dial of Destiny this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

The movie also stars Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), and Ethann Isidore (Mortel).

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has worked on each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, once again composed the score.

After the steaming pile of crap that was the last movie, I will skip this one. Should have left it at 3 movies.

@Reginator - This one is even worst than that one and that's really hard to do because the last one was AWFUL!Indiana Jones ended with the Last Crusade in 1989...that's why the movie is called "last".

@jst5 - I know you're probably not being literal and just emphasising it was the last Indy movie you, which is fair enough, but the actual reason it was called Last Crusade was because the crusades were a series of religion-fuelled expeditions, and, having found the holy grail, Indy's quest was the last of the crusades in that regard, not because it was supposed to be Indy's last movie or adventure in general.

@captainireland - I'm aware of all that.It should have been the end of the stories for Indy...the ending was perfect...which made the name of the movie perfect in more ways than one.

@Reginator - Indy's adventures ended with The Last Crusade for me.

@captainireland - It’s called a play on words. Of course the grail is attached to the historical crusades. But, at the time of the film’s release; this was going to be the last Indy film. It literally ends with Indy riding off into the sunset. The thematic meaning of send offs and legacy have more weight than the “ackshually” argument you propose. The Last Crusade was constructed as Indy’s last story. These final two were not satisfying as endings or sequels.

@MG0019 - I respect your opinion, but while neither are my favourite in the series, I personally like both Crystal Skull and Dial of Destiny.

Saw this yesterday.

I am huge Indy fan and the first 3 films have a special place in my heart. Heck, even KOTC had the Spielberg touch, despite some ugly visuals from Kaminski's DP work. I couldn't help, but walk into this excited.

But this film... just wasn't it.

- Hollywood somehow always manages to waste Mads Mikkelsen in blockbuster films. This continues the Dr. Strange and Rogue One trend. He's a generic villain and completely forgettable.

- This has got to be the most generic John Williams soundtrack I've ever heard. Not sure why Stuckmann overhyped it in his review, but there isn't a single memorable theme in the whole film, despite re-used themes from the previous films and of course, the iconic Raiders March. Williams even did the same thing here as he did in KOTC and re-used for a few seconds the War of the Worlds segment where the Tripod is emerging from the ground. Very uninspired score.

- Phoebe Waller-Bridge is very annoying in the film and probably my main problem with it. She's just obnoxiously smartass, manages to figure out everything before Indy does and has an awful lot of screentime, not giving Ford enough time to shine. It doesn't help she has an annoying sidekick kid through the film, that can only rival Sandro's (Extraction 2) current meme status this year.

- Some really uninspired action scenes, mainly due to Ford's age. Nothing even close as memorable as the truck chase from Raiders, the bridge scene from Doom or the horse/tank chase from Crusade. The best action set piece is in the first 20 minutes of the film.

- The pacing of the film was horrible. Around an hour in, the film starts to really drag, until the last 25 mins where the final act happens and it picks up. And about that...

- You need to switch your brain off for the final act, as a certain thing happens that beats the ridiculousness even of the aliens & flying saucer from KOTC. It's so over the top that it doesn't fit even an Indiana Jones film. Really unhappy with the decision they made on that.

On the plus side, Harrison Ford himself was as great as always in the role, but again, you could see how old he was and missing the energy he used to have, even in KOTC to an extent.

I hope some of you enjoy it more than I did and even with Mangold's excellent direction and a nice surprise in the last 5 mins of the film, I don't think Dial of Destiny is what it could've been. It's a perfectly servicable action film, but that's not enough for a good Indiana Jones film.

Overall, I'd give it a 6/10.

@kylo0607 - I liked it enough, I would give it a 7. But completely agree on the sun-par action and on John Williams. The same could be said about his Star Wars sequels work tho - man is very old and needs to retire

However, time travel fits Indy just fine. It’s no more over the top than Indian black magic or the ghost in last crusade

@kylo0607 - I Didn’t find the time travel anymore far fetched than the previous supernatural elements and I really enjoyed Dial of Destiny IMO a good "Indiana Jones" movie.

It does have a few problems though. The CGI doesn't always look very good and with a length of 2.5 hours it is a bit long - and I do feel that they unnecessarily do Mutt dirty.

Damn. Did him like that. Yeah.

Pretty much the only thing that would get me to see this in theaters is a Short Round cameo. Other than that i may even miss this on streaming. Next to zero interest.

Pick any scenee in the last movie with him and that pretty much answers that question.

We all know why he’s not in it. They want to replace Indy with a female. In order to do that, they must take out Shia’s character in a disrespectful way and also make Indy look incompetent and washed up. They can only destroy what came before them to lift up the new characters they are writing.

The good news is that the movie and this new replacement character seem to be rejected by those seeing it. We won’t be seeing her continue the franchise.

In 10 years they will attempt remakes or reboot with new actor as Indy. It likely won’t be good but these studios can’t help themselves.

Going to Vietnam is "disrespectful"?

I swear people have to be getting more and more stupid.

@mountainman - I hear your dissatisfaction.
But I DO think you concern yourself too much with the male/female gender construct.

Do you identify as 'a Male'?
What does that mean to you.
How about your race? Do you identify as that too? Why is that important to you?

Real problem is bad writing. AND THAT is what the focus needs to be on. Not what someone has down their pants. I couldn't care less about that.
Give me good writing.
Until we are clear, studios will not learn their lesson.

@mountainman - I haven't seen the film to determine if Phoebe Waller-Bridge is a boon or bane to the franchise, but I can express disappointment that they yet again passed up having Ke Huy Quan succeed Harrison Ford. It always should have been Short Round. He proved himself to be as competent as Indy and his adventures could have opened up whole new worlds. He is a charismatic actor and though older himself, I wouldn't mind getting a solo outing.

That said, I loved Waller-Bridge's work in Fleabag and I'm in the minority that loved her role in Solo. I was hoping she would fare well in this....but reviews haven't been kind.

@Ginley - Well, it’s outside of the topic of this conversion, but technically every person that died in Vietnam was disrespected in that pointless war started based on a lie.

But it’s more oblivious what was meant that they shuffled him to the side to insert Waller-Bridge i stead. Who is the new Kathleen Kennedy stand in for this franchise. I guess she wanted this franchise to go down like Star Wars.

@TheRose - Fleabag is fine. I didn’t dislike it but I don’t think I was enamored as much as many were.

She was annoying in Solo and it sounds like she is annoying here. I’m sure there are demographics of people that like this type of character, but it’s certainly not a majority of people.
