Just as he bid farewell to Han Solo after the Star Wars sequel trilogy, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will also mark Harrison Ford's final time playing this iconic adventurer.

The actor has made no secret of the fact James Mangold's movie is his swan song as Indy, hinting in multiple interviews that he's happy with how the story ends. Of course, with so much of the movie centred around the hero's mortality, there's been a lot of chatter about whether Dial of Destiny might close the door on Indy ever returning by killing him off.

Well, we're sure many of you will be pleased to learn that, no, Indiana Jones does not die in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

What happens instead?

Well, after managing to return safely from the siege of Syracuse by the Roman Republic (yes, Indy ends up travelling back in time to roughly 213 BC), Jones is reunited with Marion Ravenwood. Rekindling their love after it fell apart in the wake of their son's death, the movie ends with them recreating that famous "Where doesn't it hurt?" kiss from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The twist this time, however, is that it's Marrion who asks Indy to kiss the metaphorical bruises on her head, elbow, and lips!

Helena, who doesn't replace her godfather as the "new Indiana Jones" as some sites previously claimed, heads off to get ice cream and the final shot sees the camera pan from the city streets to Indy's apartment where we see him grab his fedora hanging on the laundry line over the fire escape.

This obviously suggests he's not ready to retire just yet, but regardless of what comes next for Indiana Jones, we won't be privy to it. The 80-year-old Ford has been resolute about this being his goodbye to the character, and while Lucasfilm might eventually choose to revisit the franchise, this feels like a great note to end Jones' story on.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now playing in theaters.

Yes, he lives. Despite being shot in the chest, getting dragged into a plane, and parachuting out of a crashing airplane onto a beach, he survives.

The new movie ends pretty similarly to how the last one did; Indy and Marion are back together, only Shia LaBeouf’s character is dead. I’m not sure if that’s a happier ending or not.

@santoanderson - In the last one he survived a nuclear explosion by hiding inside a refrigerator lol.

@AllsGood - to their point, Crystal Skull ended with Indy and Marion back together. Not in a similar way but they’re together.

This movie has been perhaps the most spoiled movie in history, even the crappy ending they shot before they had to reshoot it because it was so awful.

We know what happens and it's terrible.

@TyrantBossMedia - Not unless they had a test screenings while they were still shooting back in 2021 - because there were set photos of the ending currently shown in theatres leaked during filming.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10092955/Phoebe-Waller-Bridge-seen-shooting-Indiana-Jones-5-time-Harrison-Ford.html

The WW2 prologue was shot early on - then the Glasgow shoot without Ford - than they returned to filming for the Morrocco and Sicily shoots and than a few shoots at Pinewood to pick up the missing Ford stuff from the NY scenes.

There is literally no instance in the timeline of filming when they could have had a screening than come up with an entirely different thrid act.

@NinnesMBC - There isn’t a way they could have shot a new ending?

Are you sure about that?

“While playing pieces from some of his classic film compositions and previewing part of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's score in Italy (via BadTaste.it), composer John Williams made mention of a new ending being filmed.“ - December 15, 2022

“ “We are almost done with the film. It is quite possible that there will be another ending, which will first have to be filmed and then recorded for it. We’ll probably do it in a couple of weeks.” - John Williams

Nobody said anything about the entire third act except you. I said “the ending”.

@AllsGood - it was WAY better than the POS that was KotCS. Aliens was the worst idea for an indy film ever.

The ending is what it is.

1) The Last Crusade
2) Raiders of the Lost Ark
3) Temple of Doom
4) Dial of Destiny
5) Battlefield Earth
6) Some C horror Flick

The ranking of the Indiana Jones Saga!

1) Raiders of the Lost Ark
2) The Last Crusade
3) Dial of Destiny
4) Temple of Doom
5) Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

@Forthas - I havent seen Dial of Destiny yet, but its refreshing to see someone list Temple of Doom as the lowest ranked of the original 3.

Not that it's a bad movie by any means! I still love it. But Raiders and Crusade were just sooooooo good.

Seems like everyone I've known my whole life likes Temple of Doom the most.

@Forthas -
1. The Last Crusade
2. Raiders of the Lost Arc
3. Temple of Doom
.
.
.
4. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
5. Dial of Destiny

The later two don't come close to the original trilogy for me. Not by a long shot. And for me Dial of Destiny was easily the worst of the bunch and one of the most unintentionally depressing times I've had at the theater in a ling time.

@MrDandy - I agree, And I really really wanted Dial of Destiny to be great! I was on the bandwagon defending this film left & right... but left the theater dissapointed, how could it be worse than KotCS I asked myself as I left... smh.

@Forthas - for now I actually agree with this list. Although I might swap Raiders and The Last Crusade

Does 80 year old Indy live?

HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 6/30/2023, 3:51 PM
We got two weeks worth of Josh articles talking about The Flash's pending doom... yet NOTHING here about the fact that Indy 5 is already projected to take in LESS money than The Flash and also cost $50-100M more to make in budget and marketing.

So... this is going to be an absolutely spectacular failure, and yet... nothing from Josh and CBM. He also completely ignored how The Little Mermaid flopped hard after talking it it up for months. It's almost like they favor Disney properties here at CBM.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 6/30/2023, 4:48 PM
@HistoryofMatt - Good points.
This thing is already tanking hard in Europe and is projected to be a massive flop on a $300 million dollar budget.

Disney has yet again killed the goose that lays the golden eggs.
HistoryofMatt
HistoryofMatt - 6/30/2023, 6:56 PM
@Feralwookiee - Not that anyone at CBM would say so. Seriously, leading up to The Little Mermaid, we got a ton of articles from Josh about it here. Then after it was released and was a massive flop, not a peep. We're still getting Flash articles daily. Ant-Man 3? Not a peep. Shazam 2? So many "flop" articles. Thor 4? Not a peep. Black Adam, "box office bomb" articles for daaaaays.

Hmmm. What is the difference between Flash, Shazam 2, Black Adam and Ant-Man 3, Thor 4, and The Little Mermaid???

Why would CBM treat their coverage of those movies so starkly differently?
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 6/30/2023, 7:16 PM
@HistoryofMatt - There were a quite a few articles about Ant Man 3 flopping as far as I can remember, although, you may be correct about the other ones.

I've always been more of a Marvel fan (comics AND movies) but a flop is a flop either way, regardless of percieved quality.
ChimiFnChangas
ChimiFnChangas - 6/30/2023, 10:31 PM
@HistoryofMatt - that’s because CBM isn’t a news website. News websites are supposed to be impartial. CBM is a website where anybody can post an opinion piece, which will obviously be heavily influenced by the author’s biases. Josh has already made his biases known, so nobody should be surprised when he posts repeated articles kicking DC movies. It’s up to us as the audience to stop taking the bait and giving him clicks, which only leads to more of the same articles.

@Nightwing1015 - Key He Quan only had his return breakout film last year. This would have been deep in production by then. No one expected a child actor who hasn't been making movies since the 80's to make a surprise comeback. But I agree, it would have been nice to see him, but I understand why we didn't.

@SonOfAGif - Wouldn’t it end up being too similar to Uncharted and Tomb Raider?
SonOfAGif
SonOfAGif - 6/30/2023, 4:32 PM
@mountainman - Depends. Or it could be something like an open world Assassins Creed
mountainman
mountainman - 6/30/2023, 4:40 PM
@SonOfAGif - Maybe a mix of both. Indy doesn’t use guns as much as Drake, so it would have to incorporate blunt instruments and of course the whip!

The biggest problem is for a game to truly incorporate Indy’s essence it would likely have to beef up the exploring and puzzle solving and tone down the action. And that just isn’t popular in the gaming world.

Better question: Does it even matter at this point?

Ford is an 80 year old man and Disney has yet again reduced a strong character to become a failure and a mere shell of his former self only to be replaced by a female protagonist that simply exists to upstage THE TITLE CHARACTER IN HIS OWN MOVIE, not to mention we have no history or emotional connection with this new character.

Does it really even matter if he's "alive" in this series?

@Feralwookiee - Serious question. All the blame goes to Kennedy but no gripes to Ford or Mangold? Ford holds all the cards here and doesn't give a sh*t. He and Mangold made the film HE wanted to make to get him to come back one last time. He was the one who wanted to mine an older, grieving, past his prime take on Indy. Nothing got released on that movie screen that Ford and even Mangold didn't approve of. I think on this one you guys' intense dislike for KK (sometimes earned but not to the extent some people want to claim IMO), is not really on the money here. Ford and even Mangold are two of only a few creators who have the juice to stand up to Lucasfilm and The Mouse.

7 out of 10. Not nearly as bad as reviews implied early on. I'd say it's easily a better film than temple of stupid. In 3rd place behind Raiders and Last Crusade. Harrison was great. And it's not even slightly woke so I'm not sure where that came from. I guess people see woman and freak out.

It's a good movie it's just not a great one but it's worth seeing in a theater.

Does Indy survive? Do familiar characters show up? Does Phoebe Waller-Bridge take over as the lead? What's the next article, how many times does Indy use his whip?! You might as well just post a Dial of Destiny plot summary instead of posting separate articles about every plot point in the movie! 🙄
