INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY Whips Up Just $82 Million Across 5-Day Fourth Of July Opening

Things have gone from bad to worse for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny at the domestic box office as the movie managed to earn just $82 million across the 5-day Fourth of July weekend. Check it out!

Last month, we saw things go terribly wrong for The Flash at the box office and it's now Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny's turn. As of now, it's too soon to say whether it's going to be as big a flop as that DC Comics adaptation, but things don't look good.

According to Variety (via SFFGazette.com), the movie is meeting disappointing estimates of an $80 million - $85 million 5-day Fourth of July debut with $82 million over the holiday period.

Independence Day is never an overly strong period for box office takings, but studios rely on a steady stream of business given that so many people have time off work. While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny has definitely benefited, a figure which would usually be considered a solid result for a movie like this is made almost meaningless by its massive budget.

The production budget alone was $295 million, a staggering sum which has left many pundits wondering whether filmmaker James Mangold is cut out for blockbuster filmmaking.

With costs clearly spiralling out of control, Lucasfilm may end up reconsidering whether the Logan helmer is cut out to direct that Star Wars movie set during the "Dawn of the Jedi." After all, we've seen how quick Kathleen Kennedy is to sever ties with directors she questions the capabilities of.

Now The Flash has slipped out of the top 5, we're no longer getting daily figures, but it remains on track to lose Warner Bros. upwards of $200 million. How much Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will hurt Disney is hard to say, especially as we're still waiting on updated international numbers.

As we first reported on Toonado.com, as things stand, The Little Mermaid is on track to finish its box office run having earned more than both those movies combined.

It's a shame to see the Indiana Jones franchise end on a bum note, especially as the response to the movie itself has also been mixed. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was similarly disappointing and we now expect to see fans forever debate which was the worst finale for the iconic adventurer.

Have you watched Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny yet?

It’s a shame pop culture moves on so quickly nowadays, compared to the 80’s and 90’s that plays a big factor along with things like McDonald’s toys. Which in the UK are now all carboard…

@Relativity - Too many pop culture movies battling for the number 1 spot.

@Relativity - Ugh. Don't get me started on those. Its why Batman suddenly stopped killing and we had a Ninja Turtle movie where they don't use their weapons 1 time. Good riddance.

@Relativity - McDonald's toys are absolute rubbish now. We are saving a the environment and creating a sh*t, bland and boring world to live in.

@MarvelousMarty - Actually, using cardboard for toys is not going to do much to save the environment.
On that level, we are truly screwed. There is no saving us now. There is only hoping you got enough money and were born in a lucky enough place to not have to suffer immediately.
You and I might be close to the end of our lives before it becomes a true calamity. But God help the kids these days.

Reality is going to be a right bitch. I think McDonald's toys are pretty much the last thing to worry about.

@TempleRod - Exactly, bring back the decent toys and lets let everyone enjoy the time we have left.

@AmazingFILMporg - When Kennedy is attached to something you know it's going to flop.Having said that...Indy films should have ended in 89...the last two have been bad.

With all the talent in the world right now why the don't spend actual money hiring the right people and stop making STUPID CREATIVE CHOICES? It's like they do it on purpose to crap all over the fandom.

They reshot that ridiculous original ending and they could just THINK before creating that shit.

They need to stop spending insane amounts of money on these movies. It’s just not sustainable n dumb as shit. The originals cost a fraction and that’s with adjusting from inflation

@Cap1 - that's one of my few issues with it: it looked expensive. As in very digitally and polished. And it's a look I don't like. Give me real explosions and odd stunts over that any day

@CAPTAINPINKEYE - I saw it. I liked it. It was solid, fun entertainment. Were there things I would fix? Sure, but it was still solid

After watching it again I think Crystal Skull is the better film . It at least feels like an Indy film and there’s a joy and humour to the action scenes that the current one just doesn’t have. It’s obvious that Spielberg is the missing ingredient.
