INDIANA JONES & THE DIAL OF DESTINY Spoilers - Do Any Characters From Previous Indy Movies Show Up?

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is now in theaters, but if you won't manage to catch the movie right away, be warned that major spoilers are in full effect from this point on.

When the movie was shooting, rumors that several supporting characters from previous Indy adventures did the rounds online. The most persistent reports claimed that Short Round (Ke Huy Quan) was set to reunite with the legendary archaeologist, but as we began to learn more about the story, Temple of Doom's kid sidekick showing up began to look increasingly unlikely.

Unfortunately, Short Round doesn't appear, but Dial of Destiny does bring back a couple of Indy's old friends to give the iconic hero a proper send-off.

John Rhys-Davies reprises his role as Sallah from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. He only features in a few scenes before Jones sets off to retrieve the Antikythera, but returns at the end to see how Indy is feeling after his brush with death.

Sallah's involvement was never a secret, of course, but we do get one surprise cameo when Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) returns to her estranged husband to give their marriage another go. They share a kiss after re-enacting the "where doesn't it hurt" scene from Raiders, bringing Doctor Henry "Indiana" Jones' story to an emotional, satisfying conclusion.

Indy's father (played by Sean Connery in The Last Crusade) is referenced, but there's no mention of Marcus Brody (the late Denholm Elliot).

Do you plan on seeing The Dial of Destiny this weekend? Let us know in the comments.

The movie also stars Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Shaunette Renee Wilson (Black Panther), Thomas Kretschmann (Das Boot), Toby Jones (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Boyd Holbrook (Logan), Oliver Richters (Black Widow), and Ethann Isidore (Mortel).

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has worked on each Indy adventure since the original Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, once again composed the score.

I saw it last night. I went in with super low expectations, expecting a train wreck, and walked away happy. It’s nowhere near as good as Raiders, but I enjoyed it more than Crystal Skull.

Oh and they literally killed off Mutt between movies. I kept waiting for Shia LaBeof to show in the third act, via time travel shenanigans, but nope. Dead.

@santoanderson - Yea it wasn't that bad, but too long. the mutt thing was so disappointing. Would have been nice to have used time travel to get him back. a nice happy ending for Indy is what people want.

they introduced time travel and did nothing fun with it.

@micvalpro - honestly they should have time traveled back to the classic WWII setting for the entire third act. Would have been more nostalgic and fun than that Doctor Who ending.

@micvalpro - honestly. I’m glad they didn’t do to much with it. The little they did was clean so they didn’t end up with dumb plot holes.

Having said that, I was so disappointed with the movie.

@micvalpro - I question, why not use that element in a way that could be used for the characters and story, legitimately and in a fun way.

Have his son be alive, but not interested in doing what his dad does, maybe he's a doctor or something, maybe have an idea where Indy feels displaced from his son's life because he feels a type of regret that he didn't raise him. Indy's struggles with Marion are more in the vein of him being unwilling to put the adventurous life behind him, maybe in connection to his regret and issues with Marion of her keeping him from knowing his son. In this way, there's a 2 pronged case of Indy living in the past. And there's active use of time travel, where Indy comes into conflict with his past self and sees said adventures and comes to the conclusion that the life he lived then was that of a man who had little else in his life, Indy wanting to live in his present and make peace with his regrets, with Indy reconciling with Marion and finding peace with his son, and even he and Marion begin talks to adopt, as a part of a new commitment to a new life, living in the present. Short Round makes a cameo as well!

If they want, they can even complete the arc of Indy letting go of his adventurous past by handing off the hat and whip to the new girl.

Indy gets a full arc that's a natural continuation of where he was in the previous movie.

Massively disappointed by this film. Imo easily the worst of the franchise. Just came out feeling really depressed by it all. It completely misses everything that made the franchise great. Such a shame because I had high hopes with Mangold at the helm.

I feel like a majority of people will have that vibe, is why it's probably advisable to just skip it and realistically why this will be another box office bomb.

@philinterrupted - you just can’t beat Spielberg in his prime. And the original Indiana Jones trilogy was peak Spielberg.

My rankings of every Indiana Jones movie:

1. Raiders - Easily the best by far. A classic that keeps the action moving beginning to end. Marion is a great romantic interest who can totally kick ass as well. The truck chase in the desert is an underrated highlight with John Williams score rocking ass in this scene. Probably the best action/adventure movie ever made.

2. Last Crusade - It never hits the kickass highs as much as Raiders, but is still a fun adventure with Sean Connery as a very welcome edition. A lot lighter, comedic tone overall that the original, but with a lot of heart too. Elsa is hot and the femme fatale twist is nice. Fun and solid adventure.

3. Temple of Doom - Mixed bag. Some really fun wild moments and some really clunky annoying moments. I used to not be a big fan of Short Round, but he's grown on me over the years. Willie is still totally obnoxious though and Indy's worst romantic interest in the series. Some of the dark violent stuff is great; some of the "cultural insensitive" stuff will piss of modern viewers. Still a fun ride overall, but the weakest of the series.

There are no more Indiana Jones movies. Luckily, the series ended in 1989, with Indy riding off into the sunset!
Thanks for reading! 🙂

Saw it. It's REALLY missing Speilberg and Lucas. Harrison was fine, Fleabag was good, obvs doctored the script a bit and those parts were enjoyable.

But apart from being almost the exact same script as Crystal Skull (but combining Shia and Ray Winstone into one character and gender flipping them and the villain) it is not like the original films at all. It lacks authenticity. It wasn't wild fun like the other movies and yes I am including Crystal Skull.

As soon as I saw the Paramount logo and then noticed that they didn't even bother to match it to the opening shot, I knew they didn't get it. The action was boring, the macguffin was neither religious or mystical. I hope people who had a problem with the extradimensional, psychic, Mayan aliens had a bigger problem with this. I was fine with the aliens, but this? not so much. It was indefensibly sci-fi. It was stated many times that this was about math and science not mysticism.

I suppose it's like the sequels vs prequels thing with Star Wars. The last thing Lucas gave us may have been disappointing but at least it was authentic. This had Ford in it, but it just felt like Mangold had somehow convinced him to be in his Indiana Jones fan film.

1. Raiders.
2. Last Crusade.
3. Temple of Doom.
4. Crystal Skull.
5. Dial of Destiny.

@ObserverIO - Why not just tell an actual story with this stuff? Have his son be alive, but not interested in doing what his dad does, maybe he's a doctor or something, maybe have an idea where Indy feels displaced from his son's life because he feels a type of regret that he didn't raise him. ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 7/1/2023, 4:35 AM
@micvalpro - That's a really weird thing to do when they have the Paramount logo right there. I guess I was too pissed to notice it, I'll have to look out for it when it hits streaming.
ObserverIO

@dagenspear - I can't believe short round didn't appear! After his big success at the Oscars this year with Everything, Everywhere... I knew there was something major missing.

It felt like they killed Mutt off unceremoniously because of the fan reaction to his character in the last movie. But a more dramatic character arc like you just wrote would have been way more interesting, would have given the audience a good message and might have even enticed modern-day Speilberg.

I saw it.

No magic. Lotta suck.

Just a below average shadow of the former movies. 4.5/10 stars

Don't bother. Wait until it's on TV.

Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 6/30/2023, 4:34 PM
@DocSpock - It almost seems like Disney doesn't care about these properties and only views them as cash grabs and are just phoning it in.

dagenspear
dagenspear - 6/30/2023, 5:24 PM
@Feralwookiee - That's a solid enough adventure completion, but it's not really a lot of the conclusion of the overall story of the character. I think adventures may still be likely to happen with the character there.

@Feralwookiee -

Indy, Alien, Terminator, Star Wars. All my favorite movie franchises from my 20s have been raped & murdered by Hollywood.

Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 6/30/2023, 7:24 PM
@DocSpock - Star Wars has a special sting for me personally, but all of those have been destroyed for me.

I honestly only watch the original trilogies of SW and Indy and literally pretend this new garbage never happened.
There are elements of the SW prequels I enjoy, but they still are a massive disappointment overall.

What Disney has done to these franchises is the same they've done with everything else...beat it into the [frick]ing ground until it's dead.
They take the phrase "drive it like you stole it" to a whole new level.

Unfortunately, they are still too big to really fail and have put "the agenda" (demoralization in my opinion) above making quality well written entertaining movies and even profits.
They're just gonna keep beating these properties into the ground until they consistently start BOMBING losing them 100's of millions every time.
I will not pay for any viewings of these new "Star Wars" or "Indiana Jones" in name only movies or any merchandsing. The only way to eventually change things is to starve them in the long run.
DocSpock
DocSpock - 6/30/2023, 8:18 PM
@Feralwookiee -

And this! They are in the early development stage of another Solo movie.

Let's see. To play a charming coolest actor of his generation Harrison Ford, they get a zero presence guy with the cool of a sloth. To play the most suave smooth guy of his generation Billy Dee Williams, they get a$$clown TV funny man Donald Glover. Then the movie is a MASSIVE money losing flop worthy of its Razzies.

So let's make another one!! What a brilliant idea we just had!!!!!

Idiots.

Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 6/30/2023, 8:42 PM
@DocSpock - I didn't hear that they're gonna try to make another Solo movie with that charisma void guy.

At least I'm honest; I've emotionally checked out on almost all of this shit and basically am at that point with the MCU too.

I’d put it ahead of Crystal Skull but only marginally.

Crystal Skull still had the little Spielberg touches throughout, BUT, he absolutely phoned it in. You could absolutely tell he didn’t give a damn and just wanted to be done with that movie. A passionless Spielberg project as it were. When Spielberg loses interest in the material it becomes painfully apparent in the material and Crystal Skull just felt like a ~let’s get this over with fellas~ vibe.

As for this one, while missing those very same Spielberg touches that Crystal Skull mishandled, felt like the better send off for the character. Somewhat overbearing fan service in this one to be honest kind of sunk it for me. I mean they literally killed probably the most hated character in the series off between movies 😂. Anything done after this, including a Fleabag spinoff, because we all know that’s what ~they~ want, doesn’t deserve to be made. Indy deserves to rest.

All that being said, it’s a disservice to all three original movies to have these two clunkers bring the series to a close…They REALLY should’ve just let it end with Indy riding off into the sunset after Last Crusade.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 6/30/2023, 2:48 PM
@vegetaray - I rewatched all the films again before going to see this. The original trilogy is fantastic and is a classic for a reason. I'm not a big fan of Crystal Skull but at least it still understood that the franchise is supposed to be a fun adventure fantasy and I'd put it WAY higher than this movie. It was at least creative even if it went way too far. Dial of Destiny is a depressing downer that goes through a checkbox list of things from the franchise while forgetting that sense of playful fun and the sweeping adventure of 1940's serials. It loses the soul imo.
