CinemaCon Day 3 Recap - Paramount Delivers An Unreal Show With Tom Cruise & MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - FALLOUT
Paramount Pictures had the most unbelievable presentation with an extended preview of Mission: Impossible - Fallout and Bumblebee. Plus, new details on Star Trek 4, Overlord, A Quiet Place 2, and more!
With Mission: Impossible - Fallout leading the way, Paramount's presentation on Wednesday night was undoubtedly one of my most anticipated of the week as we prepared to get our first look at extended footage from one of the most eagerly-awaited action films of the year - and, quite possibly, of all-time. Plus, we also got plenty of updates on Bumblebee, Star Trek 4/5, Overlord, A Quiet Place 2, and more!

Untitled A Quiet Place Sequel
Paramount began the presentation by celebrating the blockbuster success of A Quiet Place earlier this year, which has taken in over $236.6 million to date, and confirmed that they've already working on developing a sequel. It remains unknown whether or not John Krasinski and Emily Blunt will return, but it's hard not to imagine they won't be involved in one capacity or another.
Bumblebee
If you weren't a fan of Michael Bay's five Transformers films, well, then, you're in luck because Travis Knight's upcoming Bumblebee spinoff looks unlike any Transformers movie that's come before it.
Knight opens the presentation and promises an adventure that will have a true emotional core that families worldwide will come to love this holiday season. He then brings out stars Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, and Jorge Lendeborg Jr., who share minor details about their characters before debuting a first look at Bumblebee.
The extended sneak peek opens with Charlie (Steinfeld) waking up and getting ready for the day, listening to music and dancing along. She eventually makes her way to the garage and notices that a piece of her car hit the floor. She quickly grabs a few tools and a creeper and heads under the hood of her bug to examine the problem. She doesn't notice anything until she comes across Bumblebee's face and it lights up.
Bee transforms back into battle mode and stands above her. They make eye contact and Charlie is left speechless. (Note: Bee does look a little smaller than what we're accustomed to.) Bee scrambles into the corner while Charlie makes a dash for the door, however, when she notices that Bee seems pretty harmless, she slowly approaches him and says hello. When she asks if he can speak, he nods no, which means he must've lost his voicebox at least thirty years before the events of the first film.
Bee does an assessment of Charlie and when he realizes she's safe, he allows her to touch his face and she begins to ask him what he is and where he came from, questions he can't answer at the moment. He then begins pointing at her, asking her who she is. She introduces herself and reveals that it's actually her 18th birthday today. She then asks for his name and when he shies away, she tells him he sounds like a bumblebee and says that's what she's going to call him from now on.
The clip ends and we're given a quick look at an extended trailer, featuring plenty of never-before-seen footage, including shots of Bumblebee running away from helicopters and military vehicles, him giving Charlie a ride, and several other unnamed Autobots making appearances. We see him team with Charlie on unspecified new mission with John Cena's character apparently hot on their tails.
This is one film to look out for this December and based on what we saw, I can safely say that there's more heart in that one scene than probably every otherTransformers movie, save for the first one, combined. Also, Aquaman's going to have his work cut out for him, especially with the younger crowds, which may find the fan-favorite Autobot a much more preferable option to the latest DC adventure.
That was it for Hasbro, but before they left, they did briefly show us title cards for Dungeons and Dragons and Micronauts, which are both expected to go into development soon.
Book Club
A quartet of legends took the stage next as Academy Award-winner Diane Keaton, 2x Academy Award-winner Jane Fonda, Academy Award-nominee Candice Bergen, and Academy Award-winner Mary Steenburgen arrived to promote their upcoming romantic comedy Book Club.
Following a series of jokes about their male co-stars, they introduced a new trailer that was well-received by those in attendance. While the film does open the same day as Deadpool 2, it should still find an audience as we head into the summer months.
Eli (MTV); Dora the Explorer (Nickelodeon)
Paramount then announced a collaboration with MTV on an upcoming horror movie titled Eli and also confirmed that a live-action Dora the Explorer movie is coming in August 2019. While the cast has yet-to-be finalized, production on the latter is set to begin sometime this summer in Australia.
Transformers: The Last Knight star Isabela Moner has been cast in the title role. Modern Family star Ariel Winter previously starred as a live-action Dora in a funny CollegeHumor sketch from 2012.
Are You Afraid of the Dark?
A film based on Are You Afraid of the Dark? is also in the pipeline and has been confirmed for an October 11, 2019 release date. While not much else was divulged, it was recently revealed that It co-writer Gary Dauberman had been tapped to pen the script while Matt Kaplan (The Lazarus Effect) will serve as a producer.
What Men Want
The lovely Taraji P. Henson was next to preview her upcoming comedy What Men Want, which actually began filming the day after Paramount's presentation on Wednesday. The movie follows Henson's character, a female sports agent that's been boxed out by her male colleagues at her agency, however, she gains an unexpected edge when she gets the ability to hear their thoughts.
Wendi McLendon-Covey, Tracy Morgan, Aldis Hodge, and Max Greenfield will co-star.
Instant Family
While Mark Wahlberg did flyout to Vegas for the Mile 22 presentation the day prior, it looks like he immediately flew back to set in Atlanta where he's currently filming the comedy Instant Family. The studio instead played a pre-recorded message from Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, and director Sean Anders to introduce the first trailer for the movie.
The movie, which is about a couple adopting three foster kids, is due out on Valentine's Day 2019.
Untitled Tyler Perry Movie
Tiffany Haddish was pulling double duty on Wednesday with Universal and Paramount and returned to preview her upcoming comedy, which is currently known as an Untitled Tyler Perry Movie. Filming just wrapped the week before the presentation, so it's understandable that they had yet to settle on an official title.
The movie is about two sisters, one that recently gets out of jail (Haddish) and one that's very sophisticated (Tika Sumpter). After learning about her sister's online relationship, she quickly comes to realize that her sister might be getting catfished and hilarious hijinks ensue.
Wonder Park
Next up was a first look trailer for Wonder Park, an animated feature that revolves around a larger-than-life amusement park. Mila Kunis, Matthew Broderick, Jennifer Garner, Jeffrey Tambor, Kenan Thompson, Ken Jeong, and John Oliver make up the star-studded voice cast.
The movie, which is due out March 2019, will feature an original song from Rachel Platten, who was onhand to preview the number shortly after the trailer debut.
Monster on the Hill; Luck
The studio then continued to announce a few more upcoming animated features, including Monster on the Hill. The movie tells the tale of a world where monsters are tame. The story follows a teenager that hope to follow in the footsteps of her famous father and become a true contender in the world of monster wrestling.
Also, in partnership with Skydance, they also annoucned a movie titled Luck, another animated feature. This one is said to pull back the curtain between organizations of good luck and bad luck, which sounds like an interesting premise. No further details were made available, but we can probably expect to see it in theaters sometime in 2019/2020.
The Spongebob Movie: It's A Wonderful Sponge
A new "live-action" Spongebob movie is coming and Paramount officially revealed the title during its presentation: The Spongebob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge. The movie will be the third in the franchise and is expected to hit thheaters on July 22, 2020, which is still a good ways away.
While further details weren't available, it can probably be assumed that a good majority of the voice cast will reprise their roles.
Gemini Man
Even though Ang Lee's Gemini Man is currently filming, Paramount still treated us to a first look at the film's logo, featuring Will Smith front-and-center. The eagerly-awaited sci-fi action thriller is due out on October 4, 2019 and stars Smith alongside Clive Owen (Three Seconds), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Fargo), and Benedict Wong (Avengers: Infinity War).
Terminator 6
The first logo for Tim Miller and James Cameron's Terminator 6 was also showcased and while it was very much in line with the previous iterations, the two banners we saw featured both the T-800 and Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) quite prominently, meaning it's likely that she'll have a pretty major role to play as the franchise moves into the new decade.
Production is expected to start this summer. In addition to Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton, the cast will also feature Mackenzie Davis, Diego Boneta, Natalia Reyes, and Gabriel Luna.
Star Trek (Two Movies)
Despite previous conflicting reports, Paramount has now confirmed that there are indeed two Star Trek movies currently in development. The first is a true sequel to Star Trek Beyond that will likely partner Chris Hemsworth with a returning Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana, amongst others, while the second film in development is the one coming from a pitch from Quentin Tarantino.
Both are still in the very early stages of development, so it's unclear which of these will get the greenlight first, but based on their comments, it seems likely that both of these potential projects will get made sooner than later.
Top Gun 2
It's official. Top Gun 2 is coming and production is expected to start sometime this summer with a July 2019 release date in mind. Paramount confirmed that they're already hard at work on the project and Tom Cruise himself later shared that it would be his next film following Mission: Impossible - Fallout. Jerry Bruckheimer returns as a producer.
Pet Sematary
Paramount also showcased a new logo and confirmed development on a new Pet Sematary film, which will breathe new life into Stephen King's classic 1983 novel of the same name. Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer are helming with a script from Jeff Buhler and David Kajganich.
Jason Clarke has been tapped to star in the film as Louis Creed.
Sonic the Hedgehog
It's true, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to the bigscreen. While we didn't get too much information about the project, we did get to see a new logo with the November 15, 2019 release date. It'll likely still be a while before we get any information regarding the cast, but we do know that Jeff Fowler is helming.
Overlord
Ace director/producer J.J. Abrams sent in a pre-recorded message to preview Overlord, a movie that he described as absolutely bats**t crazy and after watching that graphic and intensely primal trailer, he was absolutely right. He confirms the World War II setting and also tells us that it is not a Cloverfield movie, which it seems like they did consider but ultimately opted against.
It's hard to even describe the trailer, but the general gist is a group of soldiers discovering a secret bunker or something of the sort and uncovering deranged human science experiments. There's a ton of scary moments all over, including a shot where a soldier tries to help a woman in need, only to discover that she's just a head that's horrifically been kept alive somehow. There's also plenty of zombie action, so expect this to be a big sleeper hit this fall.
Untitled Cloverfield Sequel
Ahead of the Overlord preview, J.J. Abrams confirmed that they are developing a separate Cloverfield sequel, tentatively known as Cloverfield 4, that will serve as a true, dedicated sequel to the original and will likely add some much-needed context to 10 Cloverfield Lane and The Cloverfield Paradox. Further details were unavailable, but Abrams did tease that we should know a lot more relatively soon.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout
Mission: Impossible - Fallout is easily one of my top three most anticipated movies of the year and after having a heavy presence all week, Paramount really delivered the goods on Wednesday night with an extended look at quite possibly the biggest action movie of all-time.
The presentation opens with a pretty kickass retrospective of all five previous films, highlighting the extremely talented cast and the distinctive directors as we approach Fallout. Tom Cruise and director Chris McQuarrie take the stage and begin describing the 25,000 feet freefall stunt that took a year to plan and that they just finished filming about a month ago.
After giving us a few behind-the-scenes details about Cruise had always wanted to do a skydiving sequence, but had yet to figure out a way to film it without, you know, getting killed until now. The scene in question takes place at night, right around sunset, which meant that the crew had only around three minutes of daylight to shoot the sequence each day before it was too late. One of the biggest challenges was to make sure Cruise remained in focus on the camera, which was accomplished by sending out a cameraman first, who would have to fall backward while Cruise dove toward him.
The scene opens with August Walker (Henry Cavill) disconnecting Ethan Hunt's oxygen tank and then jumping out of the plane, which forces Hunt to scramble to get his tank reconnected and then jump out after him. (This was all done in one take, which is pretty remarkable.) The duo are then struck by lightning and are essentially falling to their deaths until Hunt regains consciousness and manages to fly over to Walker, catch him, and save him by giving him some of his oxygen. As they swiftly approach the ground, Hunt manages to pull Walker's parachute and then the scene cuts before we see what becomes of our hero - although, it's probably safe to assume that he made it okay.
We're shown the same clip three times with the final time being side-by-side with the raw footage, which makes the incredible sequence look even more ridiculous. This is surely going to be a crowd-pleaser when the movie hits later this summer.
Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Simon Pegg join Cruise and McQuarrie on stage and share fun details about filming and also express their concerns about living through Cruise's daily near-death experiences, which gets a big laugh from the superstar himself. Cavill also details that helicopter sequence, which saw Cruise pilot his own chopper dangerously close to the one that was carrying Superman.
Next up, McQuarrie introduces an extended clip from the movie, which picks up shortly after Hunt and Walker have infiltrated a group of terrorists, possibly former members of the Syndicate, and are forced to break Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) out of prison to help save the world, which might be easier said than done since Lane could easily blow the entire thing up since he already know's Hunt's true identity.
The intense clip opens in Paris where two trucks are seen parking and positioning themselves, awaiting something big, which is quickly revealed to be a transport vehicle containing Solomon Lane. There are a couple brief shots of Lane being transferred from helicopter to vehicle before we cut to a short scene with Hunt and Walker, with the latter asking Ethan a series of questions about Lane's past exploits and getting a cold response from our favorite IMF agent, "If it makes your skin crawl, it's probably true," which makes Walker realize that Hunt was the one who captured Lane.
Guards continue to escort Lane's truck and we see Hunt monitoring the situation from a wireless camera and then, we see an unidentified female, presumably Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson), remaining in pursuit of the vehicle. Once the convoy enters the tunnel where Hunt and Walker are waiting, they strike and send Lane's truck into the river, which gives us a very cool shot of Lane trying to avoid drowning as the water builds up opposite him. The other truck of terrorists looks on very confused after Hunt's sudden action.
Hunt and Walker start driving off with the police on their tails while Lane continues to go underwater, where he's eventually taken by two scuba divers - later revealed to be Benji (Simon Pegg) and Luther (Ving Rhames). Meanwhile, Hunt continues to navigate traffic and gets stuck in an alley where he and Walker make their escape through the windshield. However, when they attempt to escape on the motorcycles waiting for them, only Walker's starts and Hunt is left scrambling with gunfiring starting to pick up.
Eventually, Hunt's bike starts and we get to see Tom Cruise do what he does best yet again on a motorcycle, but with the cops on his ass, he calls Benji & Luther and asks for extraction. The duo are already on a boat and promptly reroute to help out their team captain. We're then treated to a pretty epic chase through Paris as Hunt speeds through traffic, but everything comes to a halt when he doesn't look both ways before crossing the street and runs headfirst into a car, which sends him flying. He manages to regain his composure and begins limping away, before full-on running, as the cops begin to circle him and narrowly manages to escape through a sewer, landing right on target in Benji & Luther's boat. Cue the music.
We then got an extended trailer featuring tons of new footage as Hunt and the IMF kick all sorts of ass all across the world. Expect it to be released online sometime in the next few weeks.
2018 Pioneer of the Year Dinner Honoring Tom Cruise
They say never meet your heroes, but I got to meet Tom Cruise and it was pretty f**king awesome.
I was fortunate enough to be in attendance as the legendary actor was honored with the 2018 Will Rogers Pioneer of the Year award. He was joined by his Mission: Impossible - Fallout cast, including Henry Cavill, Angela Bassett, and Simon Pegg, and director Chris McQuarrie. Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer was also among the attendees while comedian James Corden served as host for the night's festivities and Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. served as the musical guest.
