This past weekend, Mission: Impossible - Fallout made waves throughout Hollywood, not only achieving the highest opening for the 20+ year old franchise, but the best reviews for an action movie in years. With an "A" Cinemascore it is no doubt that audiences are enjoying the hell out of Tom Cruise's latest flick.

But during its development, one question had always been looming - Where is Brandt?

Following his appearances in Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation, it became clear Jeremy Renner fit well within the team. Additionally, after Rogue Nation debuted his inclusion in Fallout seemed like a given. Reportedly, scheduling conflicts with Avengers prevented him from appearing. But it turns out that Renner could have had a crucial cameo in the sequel, one that the actor smartly passed on for different reasons. During a spoiler interview with Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie, the visionary spilled the info regarding the situation.

Jeremy had his commitment to Avengers, which ironically they ended up not exercising . . . So I said to Renner, ‘Hey listen, I have this idea for an opening sequence where you sacrifice yourself to save the team, and that the mission-gone-wrong not only involves losing the plutonium, but involves the death of a team member.’ And Jeremy was like, ‘Thanks, but no thanks’ . . .  He was smart not to take the short paycheck for three days of work and getting blown up.

That's right folks, Renner would have been a dead man. For those who had seen the film, it can be assumed that Brandt was supposed to take Luther's spot in the exchange, but with a completely different outcome. Thankfully the idea did not come into fruition, allowing the actor to appear in sequels down the road.

Do you think Renner should have accepted the mission?

More like he was offered a brief role that would prevent him from ever being a part of the franchise again.

I'm glad that he said no thanks. He should be the new head of the IMF in MI7.

2 movies to be blown up in an opening sequence as a plot footnote....yeah, I'd say no too.

Definitely wise move. Maybe if the role was more substantial he would have taken it even with a death.

Is every director a visionary nowadays? Not a jab at McQuarrie, he's amazing. I just see that word everywhere now.

I'd like to see him return to the franchise. He can die in a more meaningful way in M:I 7 or M:I 8.

Renner when they made that offer:

When I saw MI1, I was happy with the cast and being used to the show, I was really looking forward to a great film. The moment I saw Emilio Esteves being killed, I went like, what?

I have seen most MI's movies but I take them as pure distraction. The first one is the one that stuck the most. So I guess Renner made a good choice.

Well good on him for turning it down.

Would have been a mistake. His lack of presence is questionable, but to do him off in that way would be cheap.

If only Mark Hamill would have turned down TLJ. But then again he signed on the dotted line for the entire trilogy...so no breaking contract there.

Wait he’s not even in the new one? Damn I hadn’t gotten around to seeing it yet and I’ve like him in the last few
