THE FIRST PURGE Earned Over $2 Million on Opening Night at the US Box Office

Prequels aren't usually successful, but that is not stopping The First Purge from keeping up with its predecessors in the earnings department.

If you’re a fan of The Purge franchise of films, then you’d be happy to know that the latest installment, The First Purge managed to earn $2.3 million on Tuesday when it launched in over 2,300 theaters in the United States.

For those who weren’t aware, The First Purge is a prequel to the first three movies, and it currently sits at 45 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. It might not be the best movie in the world, but for fans, it should be a treat if anything else.

To make things even more interesting, reports are claiming that the movie is projected to earn up to $36 million in its first weekend at the box office. That number might seem low, but for a film that required a $13 million budget, it’s clear that the projected earning is more than good enough.

The lowest earning movie in the franchise where launch day is concerned

All three films on their opening nights earned more than The First Purge, with only The Purge: Anarchy failing to break the $30 million mark on its opening weekend. Now, since the current film is trending lower, it’s safe to say a similar outcome is on the cards.

As it stands right now, The Purge franchise has earned over $320 million worldwide, and at this rate, it could break into the $400 million area with the current film.

You see, these movies are not great, but you know what? They’re stupid fun, and sometimes folks just want a bit of enjoyment at the theaters without all the complexities that come with modern movies.

The big question right now is when should fans expect to get another installment after this one has run its course.

I was not a fan of this film. Granted I'm not a fan of the franchise but still. It's not for me.

That's honestly why this movie underperformed, even by looking at the trailer it seems much more story driven than the previous movies. Nobody really cares why the Purge began, people have stopped caring about the logic and just want to see people doing insane stuff in the time when crime is legal.

Instead it's now become politically led army vs citizens with an underlying theme of 'racism' - and that's boring compared to the previous concept of seeing neighbours and friends turn against each other along with showing the psychotic and sadistic sides of people that they have kept hidden until the Purge.
