TOP GUN: MAVERICK Flies To Summer 2020; TERMINATOR 6 & SONIC Move Up While A QUIET PLACE 2 Gets Release Date

It sounds like fans are going to have to wait a little longer for Tom Cruise's Top Gun sequel as it's now been pushed to 2020. Meanwhile, A Quiet Place 2 has been dated while Terminator 6 & Sonic move up!

Paramount Pictures has moved around a number of their biggest upcoming projects, including Tom Cruise's long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick, which, instead of July 12, 2019, will now fly into theaters a year later on June 26, 2020.

The studio is allotting the additional production time to allow Cruise and director Joe Kosinski (Oblivion; Only The Brave; Tron: Legacy) ample opportunity to work out the logistics of presenting the high-octane flight sequences with new advanced technology and planes. Plot details remain under lock-and-key, but the film is believed to be set in a world of drone technology and will explore the end of the era of dogfighting with Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Cruise) now a flight instructor.

The move also allows Top Gun 2 to avoid being sandwiched between two box office juggernauts in July 2019: Marvel's Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 5) and Disney's The Lion King (July 19). The film will now open in a relatively quiet June 2020, which doesn't have anything major slated outside of an Untitled DC Film (June 5) and an Untitled Marvel/Fox Film (June 26), although the latter is likely to move due to the impending Disney/Fox merger.

In addition to Cruise, the ensemble cast will also feature Val Kilmer (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Jennifer Connelly (Only The Brave), Jon Hamm (Bad Times at the El Royale), Ed Harris (Westworld), Miles Teller (Whiplash), Glen Powell (Set It Up), Monica Barbaro (Splitting Up Together), Charles Parnell (A Million Little Pieces), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Bashir Salahuddin (GLOW), Danny Ramirez (Assassination Nation), and Lewis Pullman (Bad Times at the El Royale).

On another exciting note, Paramount has also dated their A Quiet Place sequel for May 15, 2020 with John Krasinski (Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan), who directed the first film, returning to pen the script. While there's currently no deal in place for Krasinski to return to the director's chair, The Hollywood Reporter notes that the studio is indeed planning on bringing him back to helm the follow-up to the monster hit. However, it is uncertain whether the star cast, which included his real-life wife Emily Blunt (Edge of Tomorrow), will return or if the sequel will follow a different set of characters.

While dates are subject to change, A Quiet Place 2 will only see direct competition from Warner Bros.' Scooby-Doo reboot, which opens the same day. An Untitled Marvel Studios Film will open two weeks prior on May 1, Warner Bros.' Godzilla vs. Kong will open the following week on May 22, and Disney's Maleficent sequel will open at the end of the month on May 29.

Additionally, due to the expected delay for MGM's Bond 25, Paramount was able to take advantage of the situation and moved up their live-action/CGI hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie to the vacated November 8, 2019 date and also moved up their Tim Miller-directed Terminator reboot/sequel to November 15, 2019. While the two titles will still face heavy competition from the second and third weeks of Warner Bros.' Wonder Woman 1984 (Nov. 1), the shift allows both films to get some breathing room away from Disney's highly-anticipated Frozen sequel (Nov. 27).

I am curious about Top Gun: Maverick and the Terminator one.

It may seem like a long while but time lately flies so quickly you barely notice.

Bit worried about A Quiet Place 2. Really liked how the first one ended, though some world building will be nice.

Will the sequel to A Quiet Place be called Boom Box? Because that's all they really need to stay alive now.

Except terminator and frozen target entirely opposite doemogaphics so having them close wouldn’t have harmed either of them

@TheCoonII - Not completely true. Frozen didn’t make a billion dollars with children (and their families) alone. But more importantly any time two films open at the same time they compete for the best theaters in terms of number of seats and in terms of things like IMAX, XD, etc which cost more. Most theaters have a very limited number of these and can’t two movies both occupy them in the same weekend.

I can’t blame anything from moving away from next summer because it is going to be absolutely nuts. Although the whole year is going to be ridiculous. So many huge films.

I want to know who silently planted that 100 acres of corn? And the US army has the sonic active denial system so nobody thought to use that? Or turn the volume up to eleven on some speakers? Seems like a pretty easy weaknesses to exploit.

That being said I enjoyed the movie. I just can't turn my dang brain off anymore.
