One of the show's founders has talked about coming back to Avatar: The Last Airbender after a long break to launch Avatar Studios, which is getting ready to produce a number of projects including feature films. Avatar: The Last Airbender has enjoyed a considerable rebirth over the past few years because of the widespread availability of the series on streaming platforms like Paramount+ and Netflix, where viewers both new and old can catch up on the show. Due to its renewed popularity, Nickelodeon is bringing back the show with an expanded cast and updated production values.

What we got of the Avatar: The Last Airbender animated series was epic in its own right, but it was by no means indicative of a studio eager to explore any and all avenues in the Avatar universe. Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of the series, revealed in an exclusive interview that he has been requested to return to the franchise and that, as part of that, he may have a larger overall arrangement rather than just sign on in a per project basis.

When it first aired on Nickelodeon in 2005, Avatar: The Last Airbender quickly became one of the network's most successful animated series ever. Audiences and critics alike praised the show, and its popularity has only grown in the years since it initially aired.

The show has been widely praised for its engaging characters, compelling storylines, and its innovative blend of Asian mythology and animation. It has a large and dedicated fan base and has been lauded for its ability to appeal to both children and adults.

Since its initial release, Avatar: The Last Airbender has continued to gain new fans through reruns and online streaming platforms. The show's popularity has also led to the creation of comics, novels, and a spin-off series, The Legend of Korra, which further expands on the world and characters introduced in the original series.
While The Avatar: The Last Airbender movie was so bad, it made fans of the animated series want to earthbend their way out of the theater. It was a disaster on so many levels, it's no wonder M. Night Shyamalan couldn't even waterbend his way out of the critical backlash. The film's only redeeming quality was its ability to firebend any hopes of a sequel.

Otherwise, teasing that multiple projects and feature films are now in the works at the studio, now it's just a matter of waiting for them all to come our way!

the true Avatar returns

hopefully nick doesnt dick them around again on the 3rd series, legend of korra is good but really the effect of nick constantly changing their mind on it's length is obvious

originally it was just going to be one season, so they get a really resolution to something that probably could have played a part in the next season.

Season 2 is the weakest season of the franchise, they were rushed on it.

luckily by season 3, they worked it out, but then nick was messing around with it's release

@dracula - is Nick that involved anymore?? I know that they had major frustrations with them, which is why I thought Avatar Studios was set up to be its own being, and is now working under Paramount+ (so, same parent, but not the kid-focused Nickolodeon).

Lots of folks have expected them to be able to dive deeper into LGBTQ+ characters for example, something they weren't allowed to do with Nick at the helm before (Korra/Asami having their relationship in comic books instead, for example). So I'm hoping they have more creative freedom this time.

@GreedoSarducci - the one with the elements as theme and where the fire nation is supposed to attack.

Wife tried getting me to watch this cartoon with her last year because it’s one of her favorites. I Made it through a few episodes, and I’m not gonna lie, I found each episode I watched to be an absolute chore to get through. I know this has a pretty big fanbase, and that’s cool, it’s all subjective. But it ain’t for me.

@DudeGuy - For what it’s worth, it does start out more childish and get more mature over time.

@DudeGuy - When I was 15 years old, around the time this series started to air, I also found the first episodes too childish and I was not able to empathize with any of the protagonists, but believe me, the series really gets more mature around the second book, specially when the "Blind bandit" appears.

@DudeGuy - I think I know where your coming from. The first handful of episodes I enjoy mainly for the nostalgia they bring watching them again. But after that I'm in love with the series all over again.

@DudeGuy - I was actually in a similar situation as you. Then I finished the show, and absolutely love it. Just saying, if you're willing to, I'd suggest at least trying to watch the first season.

I’m exited to see what they do next. But with their own studio does that mean Studio Mir won’t be doing the animation anymore?

A show I revisit at least twice a year, Legend of Korra I found hard to get into. I'd have much preferred a series on the cast of the Legend of Avatar as they were getting older, instead of what we got in Korra.

Still very exciting news, but where are the Netflix show updates?

@TheDpool - I don’t think they are involved with that anymore, I remember a story a while back that they dipped on it in favor of new animated stuff

@Ha1frican - Yeah he and DiMartino left due to creative differences.

I just hoped there'd be a small mention due to it being Avatar (the superior franchise with that name) related.

I just wanna know if Suyin is Sokka’s daughter. She’s got a darker complexion like that of Sokka and Toph always had a crush on him

I watched Avatar: The Last Airbender for the first time last month and I [frick]ing loved it. I've got no idea why I never watched it as a kid.

Started Legend of Korra after that and it's been more of a struggle to get into. The pacing feels slower and also a bit all over the place, and while it's cool that we're seeing their world progress it feels like it's all a bit too soon and it's lost some of the charm of the original series. It's not bad, but it definitely isn't living up to TLA so far (just started Season 2).

I kinda feel like we should've gotten a continuation of Aang's story instead; maybe something set a few years after TLA where he's a little bit more mature and experienced but it still has that youthful energy and sense of fun that made TLA so great. But the great thing about animation is that there's nothing stopping Avatar Studios from making that series pretty much whenever they want if they come up with a good enough idea for it.

The planned series about the next Avatar from the Earth Kingdom sounds like it could be interesting, but if anything I think I'd prefer them to work backwards and make prequels exploring the past Avatars a bit more instead; I just find the past setting more appealing than the more technological one of LOK.

@AC1 - They're doing Aang stuff now too. Movie in 2025 about the g-Aang as adults, and likely more after that (rumored Zuko film too, for example). Seems like the goal is to have one film and one series a year for this universe.

I've heard rumors of a movie for Avatar Kyoshi too, so seems like they'll fill out the world backwards AND forwards, which is awesome.

Smart move from Nickelodeon to bring back one of it's original creators. After having parted with Netflix, he'd probably have the time anyway.
