Although a seemingly reliable source revealed this news yesterday, Entertainment Weekly now confirms that Disney is working on an animated feature based on the little known Marvel team, Big Hero 6. The film is apparently in the early stages of development, although the studio refused to comment on which filmmakers are involved at this point. Created in 1998, Big Hero 6 is a Japanese team sanctioned by the government. The roster originally included X-Men characters Sunfire and Silver Samurai, although it seems far more likely that this version will focus on the younger team who most recently made an appearance an "Ends of the Earth" Amazing Spider-Man tie-in comic book.

They didn't want to take the first chance with anyone that would get fanboys upset. I think this is a good move. If it is successful Big hero 6 would grow as a franchise. If it is unsuccessful there is no harm cause no one knows about them. If this works there will be bigger names attached to disney animation.

It's not a big deal guys. It will be a kids film. If it's good. Great. If it's bad. Doesn't matter, the MCU will still be awesome. :)

It's sounds like a kids movie, but let's hope Marvel doesn't forget about the older demographics and fans while making it.

kemuael has the right idea.

As comic book fans, we should encourage all that can get on the big screen (albeit in at least decent quality)

Disney spews animated shit all the time...why not base it on something established you know?

This is a little odd.

I guess we need more information. Is this meant for children? Is this going to theaters or direct to dvd?

Who knows, they may just air it on ABC family or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Red Ronin a member of Big Hero 6? Along with Monster Island,Red Ronin was part of Marvel's Godzilla run....

Perhaps there was an angle with Big Hero Six that really appealed as a strong movie pitch. Conversely, perhaps they had a strong film pitch that didn't rely on specific superheroes and owning Marvel allowed them to adapt some lesser known characters to fit that pitch rather than starting from scratch.

If it works, then they've just increased the stable of valuable Marvel characters and if it doesn't then they haven't really wasted any big assets. Works for me.

Reading over the characters involved on Wikipedia, it seems like it could lend itself to a fun parody of Japanese-influenced pop culture. You have your Godzilla, Sailor Moon, boy and his robot, samurai, person-who-has-to-yell-a-name-to-fire-energy... There's some potential there.

@Nomadic1 It was Marvel TV's decision to axe EMH, this is coming from Disny's internal animation studio. Big difference. I'm hoping this is a full theatrical movie release, animated in traditional 2D animation rather than CGI and that Disney count it as part of their animated Canon

This probably won't have any connection to the MCU, so I'm fine with it.
