Back in 2009, executives at DC Comics and Time Warner announced the formation of DC Entertainment. One of DC Entertainment's first priorities was to establish a relationship with Cartoon Network to form a tv time block called DC Nation. Two weeks ago, we got our first taste of DC Nation with the re-airing of the Green Lantern Animated Series pilot and a new episode of Young Justice. Thrown into the mix are several different "DC Shorts" that are aimed towards younger audiences.
The question that I posed to myself, all of you fans, and to the executives at DC Entertainment and Cartoon Network: Shouldn't you maybe take advantage of this new relationship and exploit the fact that you have over 20 years of DC Comics animated shows and movies at your disposal?
When I was a kid in 1992, I would always rush home as fast as I could from school to make sure I was in front of the television in time for Batman The Animated Series. In the coming years, we were also given Superman The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, and Static Shock. These are shows that, while may be considered old and outdated, are still great to watch and I think the fan base is large enough that people would love to see repeat airings of these great series.
In my opinion, having a 1 hour time block on Saturday mornings from 10 am to 11 am is not enough time for fans to appreciate DC animation. While Young Justice and Green Lantern are fantastic animated series all on their own, I feel that DC Comics and Cartoon Network are missing out on a very lucrative oppertunity my not re-airing fan favorites such as Batman The Animated Series, Superman The Animated Series, and Justice League.
They could even go so far as to airing the DC Universe Animated Original Movies as late night/mid-day moving showings on the weekends. I know that those movies are rated PG-13, but I'm sure that they could find a way to make them airable for Cartoon Network.
I just see so much potential and possibility by this relationship between Cartoon Network and DC Comics. What do you guys think? Would re-airing these old series from the 90's be a good idea, or are they too old and have already run their course? Would you rather DC and Cartoon Network work to adapt new cartoons and ideas for the DC Nation? Or do you think DC Nation is fine the way it is? Post your comments and opinions in the usual place.
