AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Eyeing An Opening Weekend Even More Disastrous Than THE MARVELS

There's more bad news for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom today as the movie is currently eyeing an opening weekend lower than The Marvels and possibly the worst of any DCEU movie this year. Check it out...

Back in 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home was credited with "saving" theaters after opening to a massive $260 million. It was Avatar: The Way of Water's turn last year with $134 million, and both movies ultimately managed to gross over $2 billion worldwide.

2020 was a write-off thanks to the pandemic but Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was 2019's huge December movie (despite negative reviews). However, in 2018, Aquaman shocked pundits when it exceeded expectations and ultimately grossed over $1 billion at the global box office.

The sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, splashes down into theaters tomorrow and us currently eyeing a disappointing $40+ million four-day opening weekend. That's less than what The Marvels made ($46.1 million) over a three-day period last month.

Overseas, it appears the sequel will perform a little better as Deadline expects it to earn $75 million - $80 million, taking its worldwide bow to somewhere around the $110 million mark by close of business on Sunday.

Some believe these estimates are too high. This year, we've seen the DCEU deliver a series of disastrous openings, with Shazam: Fury of the Gods ($30.1 million), The Flash ($55 million), and Blue Beetle ($25 million) all underperforming. With that in mind, it's likely Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will similarly underperform and end up closer to $30 million when all is said and done. It may even earn less than Blue Beetle between Thursday - Sunday.

Not helping matters is the fact Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have given up on the movie; it had a low-key premiere and is receiving pretty much no love from any of the company's social media accounts.

Also troubling is the fact Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom's review embargo doesn't lift until the day it's released.

Director James Wan and Aquaman himself, Jason Momoa - along with Patrick Wilson, Amber Heard, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Nicole Kidman - return in the sequel to the highest-grossing DC film of all time: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

The screenplay is by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, from a story by James Wan & David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Jason Momoa & Thomas Pa'a Sibbett.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom splashes down into theaters on December 22.

I was told by the experts on this site that it’d outgross The Marvels 🤨

@FireandBlood - They blew it with that gendered title (AquaMAN? WTF) and Momoa without GIANT TITS.

It should have been AquaBirthingPerson with GIANT AQUA TITS

@FireandBlood - I wonder if they are gonna show up now. Surely they must have an explanation for this.

@Urubrodi - no one wants to see it just like the rest of the flops.

@FireandBlood - oh yeah it will.

Just came out and the cinema has more people that The Marvels atbleast on day 1.

Dont believe the bollocks coming out from marvel tards.

It is great. Simple story but the execution by wan is enjoyable, no dull moment buddy adventure. The special effects are clean and complements the practical which is a wan specialty.

@vectorsigma - Idk about that, not when there’s theatres not even showing the movie because WB ain’t sending it out.

@FireandBlood - i dont know about that too, why would they do that? There are no new movies around aside from this? Im sure cinemas are itching on something to show?

I have been on all major releases and i can observe the ga response to the movies. I can compare and say that the audience responded better here than the marvels - at least day 1. And most often, this signals the weekend outlook.

Also, the holidays will boost it up

@Urubrodi - sure man.

Either way, it will outgross the marvels

@vectorsigma - If it does... so what? DCEU as whole was one of the most disappointing things ever, beating the MCU's worst grossing movie is no victory. Btw I want both Marvel and DC to succeed.

@vectorsigma - how did you see it already?
vectorsigma
vectorsigma - 12/20/2023, 9:29 AM
@Urubrodi - oh i want both to succeed too. I watched the marvels twice for heaven's sake.

Marvel is just insulting us with their products, more than dc, imo

@vectorsigma - More than DC???? HOW?! This year at least we had Guardians 3 and Loki, what did DC have? I won't comment on Aquaman 2 because I haven't seen it and is barely out, but the rest? For all the problems the Multiverse saga has, it still has way better stuff then the DCEU ever had. Just my opinion though. But in any case, about 95% of your comments for the past few days can be summarized as "Aquaman 2 will outgross The Marvels".

@FireandBlood - it might have if the movie came out last week with no competition. Dan Murrell who does box office studies says that the days of 12/22 - 12/24 are historically always the lowest attendance days for theaters in the USA because people are traveling or doing last minute shoppings before christmas. Its only after those days does the box office go up significantly so depending on quality the drop off next week may not be as huge compared to other blockbusters.

I'm assuming WB opened Wonka instead of AM2 last week because Wonka needed it more and they thought AM 2 like most CBMs were sure hits. It has a higher chance of beating The Marvels at the end of its run but not with an opening on christmas weekend.

@vectorsigma - yes, but I thought WB pushed it back a few days globally, so that's why I was wondering where you saw it. Which country are you in?

@mastakilla39 - I just got out of Wonka. Such a good movie. Perfect for Christmastime.

Didn't think I'd enjoy it as much after seeing the trailer, but the trailer really undersells it. Future classic right here.

Yeah, more of you only calling the marvels a disaster when in the same breath you're saying a dceu movie is doing worse 🤣

Damn Mamoa deserved better. Not even a premiere after helping WB make over a billion bucks. I dont see why he would want to work with WB/DC again.

Spider-Man didn't gross over 2 billion ... almost, though.
