Jason Momoa Has Reportedly Entered Talks To Play LOBO; Gal Gadot NOT Expected To Return As WONDER WOMAN

It seems the rumors that Aquaman star Jason Momoa is set to return to the DCU as Lobo are true, but the recent report that Gal Gadot will remain on as Wonder Woman has been refuted...

By MarkCassidy - Oct 10, 2023 04:10 PM EST

We continue to see conflicting reports and rumors relating to James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans for Warner Bros.' DCU relaunch, with Gunn himself appearing to confirm that it's not going to be a full reboot, since the likes of Viola Davis (Amanda Waller) and John Cena (Peacemaker) will return as their respective characters.

Recently, Gal Gadot indicated that she may also be set to reprise the role of Wonder Woman for a third movie under the DCU banner, but Variety now seems to have debunked this story once and for all.

In the trade's report on the Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom drama (more here), they note that "none of the stars cast by Zack Snyder for 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and 2017’s Justice League — including Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa — will reprise their roles in the new DC universe in character."

You'll notice there's no mention of Ray Fisher! Cyborg solo movie confirmed!

Joking aside, none of this is particularly surprising - especially after the underperformance of The Flash - but what is interesting is that Variety also confirms that Momoa has officially entered talks to play Lobo. The Game of Thrones alum is expected to make his debut as Da Main Man either in Superman: Legacy, or a standalone project at a later date.

It's also mentioned that, contrary to what we had been led to believe, Gunn and Safran don’t enjoy the same autonomy as Marvel’s Kevin Feige when it comes to DC's small screen output, although a Max source says that "the collaboration between the DC team and Max executives Sarah Aubrey and Casey Bloys has been seamless."

Gunn might well weigh in on social media to dispute or clarify some of this, but if accurate, it seems the new DCU will be a full reboot when it comes to the major Justice League characters, with a couple of ties to the previous era thrown in to the mix.

Whatever happens with the relaunch, it's worth noting that Variety also says that many sources are "convinced that another company, most likely Universal, will buy Warner Bros. within two years, making recent DC subplots and upheavals feel quaint."

If this does come to pass, we could be looking at another big shake-up before too long.

I don’t mind Jason playing Lobo but I really wish James would reboot the entire universe to start off with a clean slate.

@TheLobster - Same here. It will be bizarre unless he's almost unrecognizable a la Thanos or smth. They should go with another actor.

Yeah no shit

And keeping actors doesn’t mean something is same continuity, use common sense people.

This whole idea that they were gonna try to actively tie it in to the Snyder stuff like it was an in universe reboot makes no sense

Blue. Beetle. He's still trying to keep the same actor, so how the fukc is this not tying into anything Snyder?

I didn't even mention John Cena/Peacemaker or Viola Davis/Amanda Waller.

@videovac - keeping the actor does not mean a tie in, it means he wants to keep the actor

@videovac - how was blue beetle tied to anything in the snyderverse? I don’t remember anything in that movie that tied them together, but maybe I am forgetting.
dagenspear

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Peacemaker is keeping the same actor and character basically.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 10/10/2023, 5:17 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - And some actors will keep the roles they have like Cena and Viola. I assume unless SHE wants to move on, Margot Robbie will continue to play Harley because James Gunn and WB will want to hold on to her as long as they can in the role. I can see them holding on to Chris Pine to play a grizzled Hal unless they do somehow land Tom Cruise. I reckon Momoa is done as Aquaman unless Lobo is mainly motion cap and voice work. That way he can have 2 roles in the DCU like how people wanted Vin Diesel for Black Bolt. Asher Angel could be one of your Robin's. Karen Fukuhara could be a great Catwoman. Patrick Wilson would make a great Ted Kord or even an older Barry Allen/Jay Garrick if they decide to move towards Wally as the main Flash. There are many options.

@Moriakum - what’s funny is in the very near future they’ll be saying the same thing about Gunn’s DC plan. There’s going to be a few things that fans won’t like, it happens every time they create a new DC universe. I can’t wait to hear the fans cry about it, especially when it gets reset AGAIN.

Should've known the DCEU was dead on arrival. If you're going to put Jason Momoa in the DC universe, how do you not cast him as Lobo from the get go? Just couldn't get it right the first time.
Forthas
Forthas - 10/10/2023, 4:13 PM
Of course Mamoa will be back, he is a FOS (Friend of Safran) and that is how things work in the NEW DCU! In this case I have to be honest. Mamoa was born to play Lobo. So this is actually good casting. It is a shame that when he is on screen he will remind people of his time as Aquaman. It will be odd if he were to ever have to share screen time with a recast Aquaman. If that happened of course James Gunn would make a joke out of it complete with a banana peel and pie to the face. Luckily this crap-oration will mercifully be sold next year and hopefully to capable managers.

James hasn't really helped this whole process. On one hand, I get why he wouldn't want to come out and say "none of these movies mean anything" because you want to get as many dollars as possible from a business standpoint, but I believe a lot of this is hurting the brand.

But who knows. People went and saw the batman and that was 3 hours. They just want good movies I guess
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 10/10/2023, 9:56 PM
@MyCoolYoung -He really hasn't indeed and these reports that confirm his own fellow co-workers and cast members from HIS films that were part of the DCEU do stay around screams bias everywhere. Plus I remain skeptic about Gal Gadot not returning after those conflicting news from August, she isn't one to make up things out of thin air so something isn't adding up.

And also, this is where Gunn would say (as he's repeatedly done in the past) that we shouldn't believe anything that doesn't come from his or Safran's mouth.

Finally, the act of unveiling half a new rebooted slate of films at the beginning of the year was in itself shooting yourself in the foot. He and everyone will never want to admit it but that played a role in the underwhelming box office of this year's films.
MyCoolYoung
MyCoolYoung - 10/11/2023, 8:59 AM
@NinnesMBC - I agree with all of this. CMB box office returns have been down some but none of these movies have been 100 million only bad. They're doing some real damage right now.

Gunn has always been if you asked me. He only hire his people in every movie so that gives you a clue right there

That's the role everyone expected him to play, when he was first announced...

...but noooooooooo, I guess someone needed to be a smartass instead!

In all seriousness, though, I do hope this works out. Momoa has unironically grown on me as a performer since his "I f#ck a lot" days (he actually did say that) into a way more likeable figure.

Give Gal like two days, and she’ll tell some talk show host that her people just spoke with James Gunn, and that she’s going to star in 10 more Wonder Woman movies. I feel like she’s been soft-fired a dozen times over the last year, but she always says otherwise. James Gunn could announce that she’s fired tomorrow, and she’d still tell all her Instagram followers that Wonder Woman 3 is her next project.

I would love the DCU to be good.

If it isn’t, then yes WB should sell. They probably won’t just because of Batman. But they should.
