Age of Ultron - Nitpicking Costume Changes

Age of Ultron - Nitpicking Costume Changes

A couple costume issues that I noticed in Age of Ultron.

*THE MOST MINOR OF SPOILERS BELOW* - in case anyone reading a comic book movie fan site actually hasn't seen this film yet

Now to start off, I want to state: I really enjoyed Age of Ultron. While not as tightly scripted as some other Marvel films (IE: Winter Soldier), I felt that it had some great action set pieces, successfully introduced some new players in the MCU (especially Vision), and gave the Avengers a threat that none of them could have handled on their own.

That being said, I did find myself questioning a couple of things regarding several of the Avengers costumes throughout the film. While this is strictly nit-picking, it was something that I picked up while viewing, and it was a topic that I haven't come across anywhere on the site.

1.) Captain America

I loved Captain America's new Age of Ultron costume. I think it took the best parts of his stealt suit from the Winter Soldier, and added some missing red back in to create what amounts to his best costume yet (which certainly looks more functional than his Avengers costume).

However, one bit of logic that bugged me was that when the Avengers head off to Sokovia to have their final battle with Ultron, Cap never puts on his helmet. Now maybe they wanted to have a bit more of Chris Evans's face unobstructed (which I don't feel is a big deal considering how little the mask obstructs his face to begin with), but something just felt off about him never bothering to put on a helmet when heading into a big battle (especially because he wore it in every other action sequence). Even in the first Avengers film, they make a point to show his helmet pulled off by a Chitauri during a struggle in the bank. I have no idea why they went with this choice, but it stood out to me.

2.) Hawkeye

For the opening sequence, it made sense to give Hawkeye his new long sleeved costume due to the snowy mountain locale. Even when he suited up in the long sleeves for the final battle, I bought it as his new costume choice. But then I noticed this happen.

Halfway through the battle, he is suddenly in his original sleeveless costume. While this is a minor nit-pick, I did notice it, and it had no explaination whatsoever (even as little as him taking the jacket off).

3.) Thor

This one got to me the most for some reason. I really liked the way that Thor's costume was handled in the first Avengers movie. He didn't have his armored sleeves until right before the final battle, when the armor magically formed around him through a bolt of lightning. I thought that this was a pretty bad-ass representation of Asguardian armor.

In Age of Ultron, Thor doesn't armor up for any of his action sequences. Much like my point about Captain America's helmet, it makes sense to me to armor up to the fullest extent when heading into a battle (especially the final one). If they didn't have Thor armor up at all, I would have probably just accepted the sleeveless armor as his new costume for this film (as each film has tweaked his armor slightly). But then there was this scene:

For some reason, Thor has armored sleeves when he is choking Stark in the Avengers Tower Lab. This is literally the only scene in the whole movie with this costume choice. And it just stood out to me.

So I know that these costume things are super super minor compared to other gripes people have had with the film, but again, I didn't see this being discussed anywhere.

What did you guys think? Did anyone else notice these inconsistencies on first viewing? Were there any more that I didn't notice? Is this article going to be flame bait for trolls to bash me?

Sound off in the comments.

What still to this days bothers me why they are so adamant to not connect the middle red stripe fully down towards the belt, it always bothered me for some reason

1) I think we just need to accept that helmets will never stay on a hero throughout an entire superhero movie, ESPECIALLY in the climactic battle. Studios think the general audience want to actually see the faces of the main characters, and I don't blame them. It makes them more relatable and easier to read their emotions.

2) He took the jacket off off-screen. Easy.

3) Yeah I'm not sure why Thor didn't have his sleeves in the final battle at least. But when he chokes out Tony, he'd just come back from trying to hunt down that last Iron Legion drone that had taken Loki's scepter. So I guess when he's flying, he makes sure he has the sleeves on? I dunno.

Thor was an oversight. Nice catch.

There was also a version of hawkeyed jacket where the duster is gone but he wears an underarmour like longsleeve underneath it, it was spotted on set while filming a while back. Also did anyone notice that hawkeye threw his bow for some reason

Why do people have to nitpick everything about this movie? Just enjoy it or don't but man everyone who uploads an article on this site has something to nitpick about. It's just really annoying, and yes I realize I don't have to click and read them but I am curious as to what someone is nitpicking about now.

My fave Cap suit is still from TFA, it still bothers me that his helmet and suit aren't connected though I think that's one of the things the first Avengers movie got right with Caps costume, well that and the colour anyway.

@asilvs222 ,

"This is literally" You are incorrect. You should be writing it is actually or is the only...

Cap's uniform looks great. I wouldn't mind red boots or gloves. It looked much more functional and real than the one in the last Avengers flick.

Thor: I agree with you. It is quite peculiar that he reverses his armor. Perhaps, they are getting away from the He-Man maneuver. As for showing off all the work Hemsworth does for the role, that wouldn't surprise me. I read Cavill and Snyder both wanted him to have shirtless scenes to show off his physique.

Hawkeye: Perhaps, he ditched the overcoat. It looked good in the winter scene, though not too functional.

Pietro's costume was lame. They could have suped him up more while maintaining the amateur look.

You didn't mention Ultron's having teeth...awful. Beyond that, it was a more than satisfactory sequel.

Ever since "Spider-Man 2," it appears they want the actors seen to be believed. Remember, a lot of the critique about "Spider-Man" was the Power Ranger look...especially on the rooftop with the Goblin's speech.
