IRON MAN 3 Scribe Talks AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Revealing that he knew about The Avengers: Age of Ultron a year before Marvel's announcement, Drew Pearce talks about Whedon's plans and how they won't be hindered by events in Iron Man 3.

In anticipation of next month's Blu-ray and DVD release of Iron Man 3, screenwriter Drew Pearce had a lengthy chat with SciFiNow about the film and Robert Downey Jr.'s next outing as Tony Stark alongside Earth's Mightiest in The Avengers: Age of Ultron. While Shane Black's film ended with (spoilers) Stark blowing up his suits & tossing his now unneeded arc reactor (end spoilers), Pearce assures Joss Whedon has a handle on where to take the character next. "We take his arc reactor out, but I think we also make a pretty definite statement that he is Iron Man," said the British writer. "And although Joss isn't part of the process as such, he saw all the cuts of the movie, so I've got to assume he knows exactly what he wants to do with Tony in [The Avengers: Age of Ultron] and how we've left [Tony Stark] is going to help that, not hinder it," Pearce offered.

Admitting that he knew about Marvel Studios' plan to announce The Avengers: Age of Ultron at San Diego Comic-Con, Drew Pearce explains that, “Obviously, Age of Ultron suggests that in Avengers 2 there will definitely be some level of, if not giant evil robots, then definitely a robotic or artificial intelligence entity. I may or may not have been excited about it for a year," he teased. "Not every aspect of Phase Two is planned already, but Joss has been thinking about it for a year and Kevin has been thinking about what Avengers 2 does since the first film. The scale I think they're going to reach for is going to be truly epic, which is incredible when you consider how epic Avengers was. But on a character level the story will actually be smaller, or at least more intimate. It's hard to put a list together of all the things Joss [Whedon] is good at as a writer, but definitely in the top five would be dealing with the shifting dynamics of a large group of characters," Drew Pearce assures.

Although Drew Pearce acknowledges that he doesn't know what capacity Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver will come into Age of Ultron, the writer believes, "The core of Avengers will still be our Avengers. There will, of course, be other characters in the mix, but I think what Joss is really good at is creating a family and then pulling them apart, and to that end he's got so much more to do with the family he established in Avengers. So I suspect that the first port of call in that movie will be kicking the shit out of those characters to see how they cope as a group."
Also, while it's been rumored and heavily implied that Tony Stark will be the creator of Ultron, Drew Pearce says, "There is a hell of a lot of rumors, though. Ultron may be something that appears in Guardians of the Galaxy, or it might appear in the Thor universe. I've read a lot of stuff online, and I don't think anyone has got close to the real plan yet." Speaking of the "real plan," an anonymous user on the 4chan boards claims to be a Marvel employee (with a pic to prove it) and has dropped major Age of Ultron plot points that he/she "overheard" at work. What do you think?

So far starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in negotiations to join, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon from his screenplay, and is slated to begin production in March 2014 and release on May 1, 2015.

Yeah,I rather have hints at Ultron before showing him in Avengers 2 obviously, but I don't know if he's going to be Jarvis or what...whatever the case,RDJ will be making a shitload of cameos me thinks.

Based on the quality (or lack thereof) of the IM3 screenplay, I will largely ignore this man's comments.

SHIELD will create Ultron. They'll use metal from the destroyer and create their own version of JARVIS. Then he'll go bonkers and boom, we have our movie.

Kungfu- you may not have liked iron man 3, but it did not get a worldwide negative response, if anything, it got a divisive response, there are people that really like the movie, some people that think that its alright and some that dont like it ,it reminds of another film that came out next year starring another bilionaire which got the same reception, you cant make everyone happy , not everyone is gonna like a movie that you like, there are only few movies people love universally, Mos and the wolverine have also gotten a divisive response, so dont ignore this man comments, he was asked questions about it and he answered, Joss has not told him everything, he is just making assumptions and giving vague details about the film that he knows.

S.H.I.E.L.D. council develops Ultron as a means to combat "threats" foreign and domestic.... who becomes self-aware with alien computer virus sent by Thanos?

Would continue the Thanos as the behind-the-scenes bad guy until Avengers 3.

I don't want to jump to any conclusions, but look Iron man 3 suck they mess up Iron Man biggest Villain. The writers don't like to follow the comic books it gets harder to give shit about these Movies if they change shit too much. I get it there try to make the movies for everyone but try not to piss off the core fan base. The Comic book readers.

Oldgreg- that is a bit of a problem, i think its metaphorically in that he does not need his suits or his tech to be iron man, that is not his superpower, his superpower is his intellect and thats what makes him Iron Man but in terms of why now, maybe the technoly has now come to the point where he can take it out , but you are right, they should have had a couple of lines about it in the film, i think the writers were thinking about from a metaphorical level then a logical one

Did anyone else think the Chitauri mother ship looked like a Phalanx? Just saying because that would support the alien computer virus while still linking it to Thanos.

@TheRealRemyLebeau

No disrespect, I do agree with you to a degree. Its just I personal didn't like the twist I wish he was the villain we were promise in trailers I was very disappointed. I like see scene from a book I read in movies like in Spiderman 2 had scenes right out of issue 50 the No more issue that's all I am saying.

Hero24-they did not mess up the mandarin, if you wanna say they messed up the mandarin, then you can complain also that he is not chinese, that is the one consistent thing about the mandarin over the years, the mandarin started out as a racist stereotype,"Face of evil" that was used for the audience to hate on because he was achinese communist and people hated those guys in the 60s, whenever he has come back, he has had a different personality and motivation, in modern day, he is a suave businessman who manipulates events and people from behind the shadows, is a martial artist and one of his plans involved extremis and making a profit from it(sounds like someone from the movie right?), The Ben Kingsley mandarin was the 60s characterization of the mandarin who hated america and everything it stood for and was the face of evil that people could fear and hate while Killian was The Modern Mandarin and his characterization is actually similar to the Mandarin in alot of ways,Killian is egotistical, ruthless, suave, a martial artist, uses eastern iconography ex. when he is sitting in his chair, you can see eastern designs on his walls and the dragon tattoos and plus visually, the way Killians hair was slicked back was exactly how the mandarins hair is drawn today too ,Killian was in the extremis comic for 2 pages until he committed suicide, in this they amalgamated him with The Mandarin just like they amalgamated Whiplash with Crimson Dynamo in iron man 2

they cant mess up the mandarin if the mandarin character was not in the movie, the Mandarin was more of a symbol of fear and hate, what Killian means when he says i am the mandarin at the end is that he is the guy behind tonys house getting bombed, the attacks on america etc.they did not mess him like venom because venom in spiderman 3 was in the movie, they wasted him and he did not need to be in it, i think the writers of iron man3 just had a different and honestly unique idea of what to do with the mandarin

I not saying he to be Chinese I was find with him as a terrorist threat I just didn't like he was a actor. I was not thrilled that Guy pearce was the real one I like ben kingsley terrorist. He look felt like the comic book I use too. I know they took elements of other story's and book that I am cool but I hated that twist. That all I am saying on the subject respect your opion just clear up why I don't like the film and why I felt it wasn't what I would of like to see. If you like cool for you guys.
