James Spader On His AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON Villain - "He's Batshit Crazy!"

We saw James Spader's titular Avengers: Age Of Ultron antagonist in action for the first time last night when Marvel released the incredible trailer for Joss Whedon's sequel, now find out what the Blacklist actor had to say to Total Film about the character..

"I'm going to show you something beautiful - everyone screaming for mercy..." Ultron's opening line from last night's trailer should give you some indication that we're not dealing with a very stable individual, and actor James Spader is only too happy to reinforce that during an interview with Total Film. "Ultron takes abrupt turns in scenes," he explains, while contrasting the self-aware A.I's mental state with that of his character in The Blacklist. "Red isn't psychopathic but Ultron is. Yes, he is psychopathic. He's really batshit crazy!" Still, Spader also suggests that the villain will have a sense of humor at least -- and maybe even engage our sympathies a little? That might be a stretch, but it sounds as if he'll be in touch with his inner...baby android! "There's a humorous aspect to him, which is something that drew me in from the very first conversation I had with Joss [Whedon]. In many ways he's a child, this character, because he's a brand new being who's just come to be. And yet, through artificial intelligence, he has an incredible capacity for knowledge. So he's a very powerful, smart child." Well, that child definitely looked to be laying all kinds of smackdown of The Avengers in that trailer, and by the looks of things he'll also be setting the heroes against each other so that covers the smart bit. We'd heard Spader's Ultron voice from SDCC already, but with added visuals it took on a whole new level of chilling. What did you guys think?

I really like the fact that Ultron is the narrator in that trailer. His voice is deep and hypnotizing.

At first I really didn't want to see Ultron move his lips. But now that I see it in action it looks incredible.

I love how complex Ultron despite the fact he's a stereotypical destroy all humans kind of villain. He claims human emotion is a flaw that causes chaos when he himself has human emotion and causes chaos. He's a paradox who is too arrogant (a human quality) to admit it.

Wen someone describes a villian as a "child" I know it will be a great villian.

You know, I'd pay 30 bucks to see a film of James Spader reading the telephone book, and I'd call it the best thing since sliced bread. He's just an awesome actor.

Is not that good, I've heard some people like it but just a few. It has almost nothing to do with Ultron.
If you want to read some Ultron comics there's a lot better ones like Ultron Unlimited, but if you'll read it just because you want to then it's ok
Chewtoy

This really looks like "Ultron Unlimited", where he committed genocide on an former Soviet nation and started his own race of synthezoids. It encompasses his whole "family" focus in the splashiest way.

I always had mix feelings about the Age of Ultron event. I thought the Ant-Man stuff was kinda cool, but I'm tired of Marvel milking the same old plot devices from the past (don't want to spoil it)

I wonder if the movie will take any type of nods to the book.

I'm so pumped for James Spader! He's so great in the Blacklist.

His monologue at the beginning was amazing! I hope he has a few more lined up for the movie.

Like all great villains Ultron suffers from a major contradiction which makes him both dangerous and serves as the basis of his downfall - namely that while Ultron seeks to transcend humanity as a higher form of sentient life with every upgrade he cannot because he is ultimately created in the image of a human being to begin with. So, no matter how big his scheme or great his plans Ultron can never escape the paradox which underlies his central mission to supplant and replace humanity as the dominant form of life on the planet. All he ends up doing is just replicating the worst atrocities humankind has to offer on a larger scale.
