Joss Whedon Disappointed With Cutting "Wonderful" Romance In AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

Despite being a very financially successful film, Avengers: Age Of Ultron was not without its share of criticism. Many vocal fans denounced director Joss Whedon's choice to romantically pair Black Widow and Bruce Banner, despite his reasons making a lot of narrative sense. While at  the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, both Whedon and 'Hulk' actor Mark Ruffalo were asked what their favorite scenes from the Avengers films were, with both insisting that they loved the unrequited romance between the two characters. However, Whedon revealed that during the editing process, Marvel intervened and asked him to cut out a specific sequence near the end of the film so that they could prolong the potential romance between these two characters.

As Whedon explained: "The word came down to cut out the ending. Which I understood. They were like, ‘Don't resolve this, leave it in the air, and then we'll solve it later.’ And I understood it, and agree with what they wanted. But I also underestimated, a) the ripple effect, and b) just the fact that it was really wonderful. It plays better if it finishes, it plays better within the movie. There are things later on where [Scarlett Johansson] was playing the kind of fatalistic cool that actually didn’t make sense without the resolve having already happened."

In the final cut of the film, we see the Hulk leaving the team, alone in a cloaked Quinjet. Banner's whereabouts are currently unknown. It's interesting to see that Marvel wanted to keep the romance up in the air for the time being. Would you have preferred a resolution to the romance in the film, or would you like to see how Marvel plans to explore it in future installments? Sound off below!

Glad they cut it, romance is not needed.

I'm gonna predict here though that black widow will die during infinity war causing hulk to tear some ass.

Still a crappy decision...BlackWidow/Hulk is stupid..

No romance at all in the movie would've been better.. oh, and Quicksilver dodging bullets like he should be

That was so awkward to watch, I'm still not over him killing Pietro, he had so much potential in the hands of the Russos

@RevanOfKrypton - out of all of the avengers, quicksilver had the most potential for some awesome action sequences

@TheEpicJuicebox - I also have problems with it. Because Pietro's death was used primarily to highlight Hawkeye in AoU. Whedon is on record that he wrote AoU to highlight characters who didn't have solo films. He wrote AoU to make it look like Hawkeye was the character destined to die before pulling a twist and making it Quicksilver. In every story draft, Quicksilver was the one always destined to die. What bothers me most is the character was just thrown away to give Hawkeye, a character without a solo film, a way into the spotlight.

Joss Whedon is also on record that his main goal for AoU was to introduce more female characters into the Avengers. So his allegiance was always to Scarlet Witch than her brother, Quicksilver. It's also the reason Whedon fought so hard with Marvel Studios to get Captain Marvel to cameo in the film. In hindsight, it's easy to see Quicksilver was only introduced into the MCU due to Whedon's desire to get Scarlet Witch into the Avengers -and Quicksilver's death was used as a story device by Whedon to give Hawkeye a bigger focus in AoU. The character was used to benefit other characters and never given his proper due from the start.

The good news is that Marvel is setting up with Doctor Strange, the concept of multiple realities as well as the Time Stone, ways in which they can bring Quicksilver back that still pays respect to his death. The only question is will Marvel pull that thread to bring him back? Depends if there is value in the bigger picture to continue his character.

@String - I think enough people hated his death for marvel to bring him back, I was so excited to finally see one of my favorite mutants on screen and then he just dies it really ruined the movie for me

@TheEpicJuicebox - I've always gravitated to speedster characters. Quicksilver was an early favorite of mine. I love that he is arrogant and also protective of Scarlet Witch. Rarely do you see a sibling super-powered relationship displayed in live-action so I was excited that Whedon was introducing them both.

But I should had realized, Whedon has a particular story and an agenda to fulfill. And in telling that story Quicksilver was the most expendable. I was disappointed the character was killed but I understand why Joss Whedon did it. I don't like it since his love for the character is different than mine. But I always believe Feige has a grand plan in place to undo if any writer or director goes too far in their interpretation of the MCU. And there are legitimate ways for Marvel Studios to bring Quicksilver back IF there is a story they want to tell with him.

The problem is plans always change and what could had been the plan in 2013 when AoU was being written that kills Quicksilver could be different in 2016 when Infinity War is being written which could bring him back. Is it a priority for future films that Quicksilver returns? If Inhumans was a guarantee for 2019 I would say yes, in order to play off the Crystal/Quicksilver dynamic (for rights issues, Marvel can't do Johnny Storm/Crystal). With Inhumans being possibly pushed back -then the need to address Quicksilver's return could be pushed back too.

But the potential is always available to bring back the character.

@TheEpicJuicebox - Yeah that's true and if they were going to kill him I wish Ultron would have directly killed by maybe calculating the exact moment when to strike and just blowing a hole through him. That would have made him way more menacing and made people ease their questioning of how threatening he was. That was probably my biggest issue with the movie. Not that what they did to Quicksilver but HOW they did it.

Remember when Tony says to Natasha and Bruce something like, "Stop playing hide the zucchini!"

Because what this family friendly action movie really needed was some over-sized cock jokes
