Joss Whedon Says He's No Longer Involved With The Marvel Cinematic Universe; Talks AOU

When Avengers: Age of Ultron was released in theaters, the general audience enjoyed the film for the most part, but there were many things that left them unsatisfied . AfterJoss Whedon deleted his twitter account, many wondered what the future would hold for the 51 year old director. Well, during a discussion at Oxford Union, Whedon revealed that - by choice -  he’s no longer involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

No. You know I was their sort of conciliary for a while... We do not discuss our thing... [audience laughter] But, I sort of had my finger in all of the films in the second phase, but then I just had to concentrate only on Ultron, and sort of know when it was done I was just going to stop. So I made a completely clean break - not because we had a falling out - just because I was like, "I can't..." If I was still there going, "Well, here are my thoughts on this film," I'd be there every day. I wouldn't do anything else because there are a lot of films, and it is a lot of fun. It's very seductive. When you can put your little fairy dust on things and just improve them slighty, and they actually listen to you... I was a script doctor for a long time, and the part where they listen to you was very rare; so it was very important for my own self to go "we can still be friends," but...

Later in the interview, Joss Whedon spoke on the negative feedback he got, not only Avengers: Age of Ultron as a film, but for Ultron as a character.

Ultron has been the most complicated response I've gotten, and the way I deal with it is becoming fetal for about eight months [audience laughter]. I f**king have no spine or self-identity or anything, and it's horrifying. It sucks... But I'll be okay... Later...

Marvel Studios presents Avengers: Age of Ultron, the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to the Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure. Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Avengers: Age of Ultron May 1, 2015.

Between the Avengers, being a script consultant for all of Phase 2 and then having to come right back and do Age of Ultron, dude is understandably burnt out. The Russos being a duo takes less stress off of one person handling that big of a project like Infinity War. But he did his thing and made his mark on cinema as a whole. Whedon's the man.

The same people who are bashing Whedon are also those same people praising him as a god before AoU came out.

I can only imagine the people who are going to try to spin this in a negative way. People don't seem to understand that he put the most work he ever has put in to Age of Ultron. For example, Whedon has already been considered to have done the impossible: run 3 shows at the same time. I watched a documentary about this, and they asked SEVERAL showrunners if they would do 2 shows at a time, and all their reactions were along the line of this, "HELL NO, THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE" only for the footage to cut to whedon talking about his experience running 3 shows at a time, one of those shows only having one season but gaining such a cult following became the only cancelled tv show in existence to get a movie, while the rest are his babies: Angel and buffy, with buffy being considered the greatest cult show of all time. The fact that he found Age of Ultron to be harder than running 3 shows at a time, only to get tons of negative feedback(and pretty much have people heckle him for the dumbest things, apparently he's a misogynist now? such a dumb thing to say).

So, as you can imagine, he's gassed out, people. To say you don't like the film is fine, the film didn't sit well with people, but if you're going to act like he was lazy, or being pushed around, then you don't really know Joss. Sorry for the rant, just as a fan of his, to watch people worship him as a God only for people to completely turn on him was a very disappointing moment in fandom in my opinion, I think it shows where people stand, and they need to have a little more respect for the directors that they supposedly love. I mean, I've seen the spongebob bowing down to a picture of Joss so many times before Age of ultron came out, now it is mostly contempt towards him and appraisal towards the Russo's, it just feels like fandom movies on to, "the next best thing". Anyways, sorry for the long rant.

Well, it happens... fortunately things are better at Marvel after the management reorganization. At least the Russo brothers seem to be having a great relationship with Marvel.

Nonetheless, Whedon is great. What he and Marvel did with The Avengers changed the whole genre. Even WB/DC should be grateful to them.
Now we have all this superhero movies coming.

THANK YOU! I just posted a long rant about that.

Alright. Cause I was wondering if that is a general statement or do you actually have quotes from before and after that verify that statement.

Unlike many other CBM directors, he writes his stuff and directs.

He is a good director and did tremensoudly for the MCU in a very short period of time.

You can't deliver maximum potential each time, especially in those conditions.

Thanks Mr Wheddon for your contribution. Hope he keeps on succeeds in whatever projects he has.

Webb if he had a minimum of professional integrity, is the one who should have flee after TASM2 and before the Marvel/Sony deal was even discussed.

Even Raimi quitted despite a Spider Man 3 that wasn't even rotten and made nearly $900M at a time where there were no China, no IMAX and no 3D to increase grosses.

@DellRusk To be honest, I can't think of exact names at the top of my head. But I and others on this site can certainly tell you that there are a lot of Marvel fans here that worshipped Whedon like a god before AoU was released.

@FrozenJoy "Well Whedon DID mess up Black Widow. So now I hate him forever tbh."

That's a joke right? If it's not you have lost any respect I ever had for you.

Can we honestly talk about the restructuring of Marvel now? I mean how Feige answers to Disney. From what it looks like, anything that isn't Netflix related is being put off to the side and not focused on anymore. Sure, you got Agent Carter season 2 but that was a hit among fans and only that.

I identify with Whedon. I sympathize with his triumphs and failings. I appreciate what he did for the MCU, while understanding that his particular voice may not have been the exact right fit for the universe. And most of all, I'm absolutely amazed that he shouldered as much of the burden as he did in arguably the two most logistically and narratively difficult films ever made.

And I like the Widow/Hulk thing because it wasn't actually a romance. It was a failed romance. While I'm glad it got trimmed down from what Whedon wanted (and there are a few specific things that could have been trimmed more), it delivered some absolutely great characterization for Romanoff and Banner.

The Ultron thing, I don't have a whole lot of problems with, but nor do I feel it lived up to the potential that the movie or the comics could have had.
