Kevin Feige Explains James Spader's 'Ultron' Portrayal In The AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

"We didn't hire him for his voice," suggests Marvel Studio honcho Kevin Feige when asked about James Spader and how The Blacklist actor will portray the villain of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

During the Thor: The Dark World press junket, the Huffington Post caught up with Kevin Feige and asked the Marvel producer about the casting of Joss Whedon's first choice for Ultron, James Spader, for the forthcoming Avengers sequel. Well, I think it will be more than a voice role -- we'll be capturing his face and his body to create a whole performance," says Feige. "He's a very unique and incredibly exciting and unpredictable actor. And Ultron in the comics is a robot, but what's cool about him in the comics -- and certainly how Joss Whedon is interpreting him for the movie -- is that he is much more than just a robot. That he's infused with much character. And I don't want to say too much, but you can imagine James Spader will be very dynamic in his portrayal of this character." Can we assume Spader will use a robot voice? "We did not hire James Spader to do a robot voice," responds Kevin Feige. What do you think?

So far starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson and James Spader, with Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in negotiations to join, The Avengers: Age of Ultron is directed by Joss Whedon from his screenplay, and is slated to begin production in March 2014 and release on May 1, 2015.

dinotron-that was something they put together because thats ultrons most iconic look, but i think he is alluding to motion capture,i dont think they would make that BIG of change to make him human especially after the mixed reactions to iron man 3 and the backlash against the Mandarin

Ultron will be an android like Vision or maybe like a LMD. That's where capturing his face comes in. And that's how they make him more human-like as has been alluded to. Calling it.

the thing with ultron is that he is a contradiction, he hates emotion, considers it a weakness but he feels emotion, love, hate,he makes a companion for himself in the comics so he has emotion so maybe they are gonna manifest that more literally

I actually like the idea of Ultron being more than just a robot. Marvel hasn't failed us yet, I have full trust in them.

batmaniac- i dont mind, comics have so many intepretatioons of characters,as long its interesting and well done i wouldnt mind.it cant be worse then when he infected tony stark and turned him into a host for him by making him a female Ultron(yeah that happened ,it was so weird)

marvelstudios - well they have not failed me but after iron man 3,they failed a fair amount of people but also made many people happy so we will see

Yeah true, to each their own. But the way I see it is that the MCU is different to 616 universe just like how the Ultimate universe is different to the 616 universe. It has a different interpretation on some characters and events.

TelaVizion - 10/21/2013, 10:29 AM
Yeah, if Ultron was keeping the same face from the comics and teaser, you wouldn't need to "capture" James' face. Ultron's face doesn't have that type of movement.

Maybe at some point he'll be able to morph or something

I think they'll do fine by Ultron. But seriously, Spader's been going back for 23rds at the buffet!!

Ultron will be a bad version of Sonny from I,Robot, looks wise and personality wise but will still have the basic outline of comic book Ultron. I'm guessing he'll start off with no emotions before developing "feelings" which is part of the reason why he turns and goes against The Avengers. He's pretty much going to be "The Vision".

So, Ultron is NOT born of Jarvis then?

They better show the relationship between Pym and Ultron dammit. It won't take me out of the story much, but I will be sitting in my seat stewing over it a bit.

Oh, and I'd give my left arm to see this happen to ol' shellhead.

UltimateCapt
UltimateCapt - 10/21/2013, 10:52 AM
Ultron has replicated himself many times in the comics. It would be reasonable that he has a human form and a robot form. He also evolves in the comics. He may begin with one form and morph through out the film to end up as something else. Similar to Iron Man's suits upgrading.

Is Spader's Ultron gonna force Downey's Stark to perform fellatio on guests at a cocaine fueled supervillain party like he did in Less Than Zero?
leftcoastpunk
leftcoastpunk - 10/21/2013, 11:20 AM
What, just because he's always been a metal guy in the comics, he's not allowed to be a white guy in the film! Talk about double standards people!
