SDCC '13: Joss Whedon Says Agent Coulson Is Not In The Current Draft Of 'AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON'

Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) seemingly met his demise at the hands of Loki (Tom Hiddleston) in Marvel's The Avengers but he's coming back this September in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Will he also be back for The Avengers sequel?

Speaking at SDCC 2013, "Avengers: Age of Ultron" director and screenwriter Joss Whedon said that Agent Phil Coulson is currently not in his draft of the film. However, he didn't rule out a possible change in the plan of action admitting, "He could. Right now it's not something I'm pursuing because I have so much going on in "Avengers" 2. Finding out that Coulson is alive would be an entire B story. And I already have too much movie. That's better than the other thing." Indeed, there's new additions of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch along with an evil sentient robot named Ultron - there's definitely going to be a lot going on in The Avengers sequel.

In the interview, Whedon also discussed Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and the possibility of the character appearing in "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Whedon stated that they have to walk a fine line with crossing over into the films, "Well, I don't need to see that movie. I saw it on TV."

I wonder which Avengers take a backseat/lesser role...probably Black Widow, Thor.

@Reasonnnn

Why the heck would they put Thor in the back seat?

Thank goodness! If Coulson had a part in Avengers 2 it would have been too far. Being reanimated for AOS was enough.

Rest in Peace C. We need to see Quicksilver and the Scarlet B*tch in action this time around.

That's because he's dead and is Ultron..

Hopefully Black Widow takes a backseat and let's Scarlet Witch be a total badass. Hawkeye needs to be awesome

Hmm. The reason why bringing Coulson back is so questionable is because of how significant his death was to the characters of The Avengers. Of course we'll have to see how Agents of SHIELD plays out, but if we assume that Coulson's death was deception orchestrated by Fury, it's kind of a big deal and something The Avengers should find out.

Don't really care that much about whether or not Coulson's in AoU.

Even if they didn't include Pym in AOS I would still like to hear his name come up as Ultron's creator. The massive failure of Ultron is a huge determining factor in his personality. Pym overcoming that failure is genuine drama. Too bad.

Well he will be on Agents of SHIELD. He got his own show, I'm fine with him not being in Avengers 2.

Expected this. Not surprising in the least.

@liveman: Hawkeye's been confirmed to have a bigger role this time. Cap and IM had the biggest roles in the first film and more than likely will again. Hulk "stole the show" last time so they'll probably be giving him more screentime. QS and SW need to be developed in this film since they haven't been introduced yet. So that leaves Thor and Widow to possibly take the backseat.

@SugarYumYum

That isn't exactly true. All Whedon said was that in Avengers 2, Hawkeye will actually be conscious, as opposed to most of the first film. Nothing about him being in it more than he was in Avengers.

Cap, Iron Man, and Thor are the Big 3. Loki overshadowed Thor a bit in The Avengers, but with him out of the picture, Thor will likely get more spotlight.

Coulson finds out he is an LMD, has an identity crisis, realizes he is not the man he thought he was. Grows to resent humanity/SHIELD, rebels against his Coulson program, becomes Ultron.

@liveman: Ah, I see. I took the news as him getting a bigger part of the pie.

I do feel like Thor will be getting more actual screen time in this one but somehow, I can't see him being any more of a focus than he was in the first film. I'd like to be wrong though.

Basically, agent coulson dying and then popping back into existence makes for some bad movie making. So they'll leave it to agents of shield to take the heat for it. I sure hope we get a good explanation in the show, otherwise that's really going to turn me off of this.

I resent the implication that Ultron is evil. He's just trying to make the world a better place.....by wiping out humanity and introducing artificial life modeled in his image.

Don't think its such a problem if Coulson's not in Avengers2. There's enough of him in AoS.
It depends on who will be the creator of Ultron and how Captain America: The Wintersoldier is connected to Age of Ultron. That defines how SHIELD is involved.

@Tony93

He's basically saying Marvel has to be extremely careful about what characters from the movies they allow to appear on the show because the audience could very well have the mindset of "Well I already see Captain America every week on television why would I pay $12 to see him in his own movie?"

Hawkeye will get short stick again and Thor will be nerfed.
ParisSun
ParisSun - 7/23/2013, 4:59 AM
Realistically, Cap, Iron Man and Thor are not taking a back seat since all of the helm movies. Hawkeye will get more to do but I suspect Black Widow will have more than him. Coulson needs to stay away, his time on screen can go to Hawkeye.

I want time spent on Ultron, Scarlet Witch and less so on Quicksilver.

Joss said this movie will have an international feel so we are likely to see the team split up and rounding the globe. We had the Cap/Iron Man dynamic in the last film. Hopefully the mix up the pairings or groups.

But maybe they just expand the Iron Man/Banner relationship. They also may work the Cap/Widow/Hawkeye triangle. Thor doesn't fit well with anyone.
