Back in 2012 genre icon Joss Whedon brought to our screens the unprecedented first meeting of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's heroes in The Avengers. The film was the culmination of the franchise's very first "Phase" and smashed both expectations and the box-office.

Whedon then only naturally returned to helm its sequel, the equally successful but less well-received Avengers: Age of Ultron. Famously Whedon was frustrated during the production of the sequel and was burnt out afterward, making it clear that he would be taking a break from those sorts of films.

Enter the Russo Brothers, who exploded onto the scene with what many consider to still be the best MCU film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The directing duo then delivered Captain America: Civil War,  to similar a film that could easily have been called Avengers 2.5 to similar fanfare.

So it made sense when they were announced to direct the most ambitious film in the franchise - the finale event that Avengers: Infinity War.  Speaking to ScreenRant during a set visit on the aforementioned film, Elizabeth Olsen who made her MCU debut in the Whedon directed Avengers: Age of Ultron spoke about how working the Russos differs from the Firefly creator:

"The biggest difference is that Joss wrote everything. When he writes them, he plays every single character in, like, a cabin and he does the fighting sequences as much as he can and then he writes it. I think the main difference is that the Russos delegate and they trust everything that they’ve delegated things to. Not saying Joss didn’t, but that’s a lot of pressure to be a director and then go home to also do rewrites for the next week. So I think it’s just as it gets bigger, things become more specific to different departments and I think it allows maybe even a freedom within the dialogue sometimes, because there’s a space some of us have the ability to step out and not be on the page. Not saying that one’s better than the other because Joss knows these characters better than maybe each one of the individuals do because he lives it and breathes it, and the Russos at the beginning of filming are like, “You’re in control of your character. If there are things you think we missed, please participate, please say.”

What do you think of Olsen's comments? Have you preferred the Russo Bros films to Whedon's? Are you upset that he didn't return to helm Avengers: Infinity War?  Leave your thoughts below.

She was really careful to not disrespect either but if I had to guess I'd think she preferred Russo's. Anytime you're given a certain amount of freedom I think you relish the opportunity as an actor or actress.

@MyCoolYoung - This always has been part of the Hollywood System. Hollywood loves to delegate stuff and everything is a machine. That is why a lot of Hollywood films feel artifitial and fake.

In Hollywood Producers create an outline and put a Writer to do the Screenplay, then they get a director who then directs the actors, has to say "yes or no", bring some ideas and prepare the storyboard/shooting board.

That is all. A lot of Directors loved to Produce their own movies to have more creative control but they dont write a single word they just came with the idea.

I would say both systems and both ways are pretty fun. It is truly fun to write and direct you have an unique connection with the material because you create it and you see it take form and become alive...

But it is also fun to use the more "standart" system of: You pay me 1 million dollars and i do this movie for you, i dont have a clear connection with anything, i didnt write this. But i should find a way to connect with this story to bring it alive...

That is something that people sometimes forget the connection a director needs to feel with a Story to be able to create the film. If you dont have or feel any connection, the film will be pure shit.

@AleSir19 - that's a dope explanation.. I actually inquired about the writer to directors role on a previous post since most times the director get most of the accolades for a movie. I was confused

@MyCoolYoung - I am film made under "The Hollywood System" the Director does the next things:

-Pitch a Style Vision for the project. How he would make this film come alife. A brief pitching about Tone, Music, Action Sequences, character design and how it would look in general.

-The Director can rewrite and change the Screenplay before or while the Production is happening, to ensure his creative control in a way and to feel good with the project. Also to fix issues in dialogue or action or to add Sequences.

-The Director makes the storyboard or shooting board along the DP. He decides how every shot of the film will be, how it will be made are questions that need to be answer and how to plan something like this.

-Then the Director becames a "Yes or No" figure, all the departments present solutions or bring issues to the director and he needs to came with an answer: "What color the dress needs to be?", "¿What this character is all about?", "What you think about this location?", "which concept is the best one?" Sometimes in big productions i believe the Producers came with a lot of answers to those questions:

This is the street, this is the studio, this is the place. For the sake of the budget and the director just need to make it work for the movie.

-While Shooting The Director is in charge of the actors and the blocking, he can bring more answers to the technical stuff (give me a shot from here or give me another shot) but in a huge production every movement is alredy plan and alredy decided. He cant change a lot. So he plays is with the actors and how they move and what they bring...

@kakinurmawth - Buffy,Firefly/Serenity, Avengers...

seems like people forget that he directed The Avengers, the movie was great, it had a lot of cool scenes, everybody loved it when it was released and it made 1,5 billion

he gets a lot of hate because of the shitty Justice League movie,he directed just the reshoots and fans trying to blame him, Zack Snyder is the hack

@IcemanX

Age of Ultron wasn’t exactly a great sequel. But yeah Avengers was aces. The cheesiness Whedon-isms actually worked as a strength in that movie.

@regularmovieguy - AOU had alot of work to do for the MCU at large and it really did accomplish most of it. I think fans were just jarred with the WE ARE ARRIVING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOVIE vibe. A ton of stuff was already established off screen by the time AOU showed it to us and we were always playing catchup. I kind of respect it for that tone because it reminded me so much of picking up a comic in the middle of a 6 issue arc and playing catchup to what was happening in the issues you missed.

That is awesome

I loved his portrayal! I was really sad that he had to kick the bucket already.

Hoping he can add more depth to the character and it’s not a cameo. Pretty mid-tier villain imo.

I think the problem with Whedon's Age of Ultron was that it undermined the previous stage 2 films and their narrative with weak or no explanation at all... It was apparent that the Russos were building a relationship between Cap and Nat, and that would've been far more organic than the forced connection between Nat and Banner.

I enjoyed and appreciate Age of Ultron, especially with subsequent viewings over the years. Still, there were a few things I might have done slightly different, but it is still an above average effort in the CBM business.

I actually do think that Winter Soldier is the best MCU film so far...and I hope Infinity War replaces it in that top spot.
However, I did enjoy both Avengers movies quite a bit and I'll go as far as say that Age of Ultron is among my favorites in the MCU as well (unpopular opinion).

Whedon is a moron. I enjoyed the 1st Avengers, but after AOU, I'm glad he's gone.

Both great directors/director teams, but you can tell they have very different approaches to the content.
