JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX Spoiler Discussion & Poll: How Would You Rate The Divisive JOKER Sequel?

Joker: Folie à Deux hasn't fared particularly well with critics, but now it's time for you, ComicBookMovie.com's readers, to weigh in with your thoughts on the divisive Joker sequel. Cast your vote here...

2023 wasn't a good year for the DC brand. DC Studios announcing that the franchise would be rebooted at the start of the year lessened interest in Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, with each of them struggling at the box office.

Only Blue Beetle really managed to escape the wrath of fans and critics, though it too flopped with $130 million on a budget of over $100 million.

2024's only DC movie is Joker: Folie à Deux and it's finally here. Unfortunately, reviews have not been kind, most fans seem to hate the sequel, and opening weekend box office projections make for painful reading.

Joker wasn't exactly a critical darling in 2019 but it broke records and earned Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar, so the $1 billion hit spawning a follow-up always seemed in equal parts both inevitable and unlikely. Where did it all go wrong for Joker: Folie à Deux? It could be the musical elements, the fact there was nothing really left to say after the first movie, or a general tarnishing of the DC brand.

Either way, with this being one of the biggest movies greenlit on David Zaslav's watch, big questions will need to be asked in the coming months.

Right now, we just want to hear from you, ComicBookMovie.com's readers. In the poll below, you can share your ratings for the Joker sequel before heading to the comments section to talk about all things spoilers.

Joker: Folie À Deux finds Arthur Fleck institutionalized at Arkham awaiting trial for his crimes as Joker. While struggling with his dual identity, Arthur not only stumbles upon true love, but also finds the music that's always been inside him.

The sequel stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar-winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The movie also features Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

Phillips, who was nominated for Oscars for directing, writing and producing Joker, directed Joker: Folie À Deux from a screenplay by fellow Oscar nominee Scott Silver & Phillips, based on characters from DC. This follow-up was produced by Phillips, Oscar nominee Emma Tillinger Koskoff and Joseph Garner. Lady Gaga served as music consultant.

Joker: Folie À Deux is now playing in theaters.

5/5[*]

Well deserved, much needed, long overdue, if for no other reason just to make the first one's sympathizers eat some properly served dirt.

You know, I get asked why I care. Why it matters, and why I make everything personal.

When some users' whole spiel is to project an air of self proclaimed superiority, a blatant "what I enjoy is superior therefore I am better than you" vibe, I'm gonna make damn sure they come to terms with just how sub-simian those users truly are, who like to preach about independence and revolution while sucking the geriatric dicks of those in power.

I've literally f#ckin' bled on the streets, before I was even an adult, only to see now in my early 30's more and more narratives being formed with the ease of faux confidence behind keyboards.

That's not anarchy. That's the order they so crave. So I'm gonna make sure they get it.

F#ck your icons. F#ck your role models. Listen to your own gospel, and get what you f#ckin' deserve.

I have yet to see this aswell (and probably won’t for awhile) so I can’t grade it as of yet but I can do so with the first one…

Joker (2019) was a movie with a paper thin plot that had little to no depth in its characters but was elevated by the cinematography , music and especially Joaquin Phoenix’s committed performance.

Grade: C

They need one more choice in the poll.

How many times are you going to not watch it.

I very much enjoyed the first movie, but I lost all interest in the sequel after hearing it would be a musical.

Didn't watch it, nor do I plan on watching it. Money and time are too valuable to waste on these kinds of movies.

The first one is incredibly overrated but it was a good movie.

So shocking that it sounds like the director intentionally tanked this one because he didn’t like some of the people who liked it.

Oh you liked this Joker that you were supposed to hate? Well he isn’t the real Joker, he gets no dialog for a huge chunk of the movie, and he’s gonna get gang raped this time. Suck it losers!

Easily the worst cbm of all time (the likes of Batman & Robin and Madame Webb are in a whole nother league, they seem tame after this shitshow), but possibly one of the worst actual films of all time. Def in the convo.

The 2019 film Joker had a shallow plot and few to no character depth, but Joaquin Phoenix's passionate performance and the film's photography and soundtrack brought the film to life.

Watched it last night. There are some good elements to it and bad. The continuation of Arthur’s story was actually good(the non-musical parts). The musical aspect to it was not really my cup of tea but I do like that they tried for something unique. Visually the musical parts DID balance the darkness of the film, so that was cool. The story felt interrupted by a song too often. If the songs were more obviously matched with the situation, if the songs were original pieces that explained or added something to the story then that may have worked better, too.

Returning characters felt pretty natural and really enjoyed the scene with Mr. Puddles. It was so sad and a good anchor for Arthur for means to show that Joker isn’t who he is.

Joaquin Phoenix is once again the most mesmerizing actor in this and carries a huge amount of the weight of the film but Gaga has some good scenes as well. Brendan Gleeson killed it as the guard. He played is fairly complex character and killed it with the amount of screen time he had.

All in all, I enjoyed a lot of aspects to this film. I’m still kind of making my mind up about it but I definitely am glad I saw it in the theater. The first Joker was a 6 out of 10 for me. Joaquin was an acting beast and it was great to just watch him do his thing and the third act was perfect. This movie had more parts that I liked but I just really am not a fan of musicals.

I think the better ending would have been him getting the chair instead of getting shanked. Imagine a scene where he's in the chair trying to use his last words to denounce what he's done, but he can't get the words out because of his uncontrollable laughter, and he's still laughing when he's electrocuted. That image is what spurs on the Joker movement and inspires people despite it not being what he wanted anymore.
Still keeps the same themes as what they went with, but possibly less dividing and more haunting.
