Robert Zemeckis, the director behind such popular classics as
Back to the Future and
Forrest Gump (just to name a few) recently spent some time in Italy to generate buzz for his upcoming biopic
Welcome to Marwen. While he was giving interviews, Zemeckis was asked by Italian entertainment site Bad Taste about his willingness to direct a comic book movie from a Marvel or DC Comics property. This isn't the first time Zemeckis' name has been brought up in conjunction with a comic book franchise; last year, the director was rumored to have been on a shortlist of talent being courted to overtake
THE FLASH. And though that position has been filled by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the men responsible for
SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, Zemeckis isn't exactly swearing off the genre all together. Here's an English translation of the exchange:
Bad Taste: Rumours have seen you attached to a comic book movie for a while, but then nothing happened. You are one of the fathers of modern pop cinema so what's your opinion on the comicbookmovie genre? Would you see your self working on a Marvel project or on a DC Comics project?
Zemeckis: I would do any project... I don't have any... you know, the projects that I'm attracted to are the ones that the ones that require the director's vision. You know, the filmmaker's own and personal artistic stamp. So yeah, if there's room for that, to do that in a comic book inspired story, I have no problem. I just wouldn't want to do a project that is... something that could be interchanged with five or six directors.
Clearly, Zemeckis isn't looking to give up his visionary status any time soon. And though it means we won't be getting another time traveling flick in the form of a FLASH movie, it is still comforting to know that the director is open to the idea of adapting a comic book for the big screen. As a fan myself, I can only hope the right project makes its way into Zemeckis' hands.
