How Does Hank Pym Fit Into The Avengers Franchise?

With Nathan Fillion rumoured to be playing the Scientist Supreme, how does his character fit into the already growing Avengers Franchise, and how will his character develop?

Hey guys, this is my first article on this site, so let me know how I do!

Wadey09 posted on here recently that Nathan Fillion is pretty much 'locked in' to be playing Hank Pym. However, the source doesn't say what films he'll be in. So this is how the character is going to fit in through the films.

At the end of IM2, we saw a scene with Nick Fury and Tony Stark at some SHIELD Headquarters, and in the Background was a map of the World with several points of interest highlighted. It has already been speculated who these points possibly relate to: Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Cap(in the Arctic AND Germany, if @contrast is right) and Namor.

If all of these markers are accounted for, SHIELD is obviously not looking to recruit Hank Pym. So how is he going to be in the movie? One possibility is that Hank is already working for SHIELD. Although Hank is most famous for his Pym Particles, he is still the 'Scientist Supreme' and is very knowledgeable in all fields of science. So maybe Nick has recruited him to the team focusing on finding Cap and ensuring he is brought back correctly. If Hank was placed in Cap as a supporting role, there would be less characters to introduce in the Avengers Movie and the character has more time to grow.

If Hank IS in Cap, at what stage is the character going to be? There is the possibility he hasn't even discovered Pym Particles yet, and is just known as an excellent scientist. If so, this could lead on in the Avengers movie to show Hank discovering the particles then, and becoming Ant-Man in that film to help the team. I dont think the Wasp should be in this movie; there would be too many characters, too many plots and not enough focus on the big guns. She should come into it later though.

Hank's story could continue in his own movie following The Avengers, with Hank furthering his career as a superhero and THEN meeting Janet Van Dyne then. I'd also like to see Ultron in this film - if the robot is secretly created and escapes in the Ant-Man movie (by hypnotising Hank so he forgets all about it), Ultron is then set up to be the Villain in Avengers 2.

In the second Avengers movie, Id like to see Hank take a bigger role. Perhaps he could learn early on he's created the killing machine, and this could lead on to his downfall. I think the story of Hank losing his mind, abusing Janet and eventually becoming Yellowjacket is something that could be brought to the big screen really well. Feeling guilty over Ultron, Hank becomes depressed and mentally ill, becoming Yellowjacket towards the end of the movie. Due to his mentally weakened state, puts the team in Jeopardy. Cue Hawkeye to take his place for the final battle maybe?

Hanks recovery could be tied in at the end of The Avengers 2, or could be drawn out into a redemption type story in Ant-Man 2. I think the latter choice would be better - this could delve into the Giant-Man/Goliath storylines.

Hank could also fit into various other CBM's: he'd fit into a Hulk 2 really well (fighting as Giant-Man?) or even into IM3 to further the history of SHIELD's operations and research.

Anyway, thats how id like to see Hank develop in the Avengers Franchise. What do you guys think?

@Ashdm-- Great article! I've never been just absolutely fascinated with Hank Pym, but I do love the stories that involve him being unstable because of all the trouble Ultron has caused (and the effect of shrinking and growing on his brain...) My favorite arc (that probably wouldn't translate will to the big screen) is located somewhere in West Coast Avengers in which Ultron constantly calls Hank and psychologically harasses him. I actually did a fan fic about Pym (and cast T.J. Thyne as Pym, rather than Fillion) a while back that I think would make a great movie interpretation of the character. It's Here if you're so inclined to take a look at it...

Anyway, Great article, and look forward to seeing more journalism from ya.

thanks guys xD

@contrast, Just read that fan-fic, I think that's an awesome way to introduce the character! I think if Hank is going to be in it, Ultron HAS to be in it, he's one of the biggest antagonists for Hanks downfall. I'm not really too big on Pym myself anyway, I'm just interested to see how they play him out in the film; I'm afraid they'd use him as a gimmick if someone like Pegg played him...

@LEEE, haha I know man, I just didn't know how they'd introduce him in the movie, coz they couldn't do the same as the origin story. A comment from LEE on my first article... If I get some boobs from Teabag, today will be a success! Haha

i actually think that Pym should start out as a supporting non-hero character. think Ultimate Avengers.
Pym was kicked off the Super Soldier Program because of Banner being better than him.
assuming that Hulk might be a baddie in Avengers, have Pym be like the lead scientist of Avenger Initiative.
after the first Avengers, let him have his own spin off film in which he discovers Pym Particles. then, in the Avengers sequel, let him join the official roster as an active member.

this way, he'll help found the Avengers and allow for suitable character development after the fact.

they could make so many sequels, and use characters from the avengers in them and add ones that dont make it . i would love to see giant man, hawkeye, ultron, absorbingman, namor, the skrull, winter soldier, and more. and like i say often the hulk/banner neads to be in the avengers, and leader, and abomination should be the main villains, then the skrull for the sequel, then civl war. i also think this avengers film should be two films back to back or one really long flick.i also tyhink marvel needs the rights to their other properties mainly x-men,spiderman,and fantastic four. i would love them to at least mention mutants and things that hint at spiderman and the x-men in the avengers so when they get the rights back they can put them all together. hell yeah hank needs to be in the films too, along with hulk, leader, thor, nick fury, the cap,and ironman.bring on the great stories.

he could be a scientist that works for SHIELD. it wouldn't take long to introduce that.

Nice Article. With so much focus on the Big Three Iron Man THOR and CAP it almost seemed that the producers were overlooking how important Hank and Janet are to the team. One very important important note that many have overlooked is the fact that Janet was the one to originally name the team. Now that Fury has already introduced the Avengers Initiative I can't help but wonder that her and Hank are already working for SHEILD, and they are already playing important roles in creating the team. Science is going to play such an important role in The First Avenger, and the Avengers, that Im sure Bruce Hank and Janet, will be the driving force for finding the solutions to defeating the enemy.

@strangemann thanks man. But how is Banner going to be on the SHIELD science team if they're trying to capture the hulk? I dont know what theyre going to do with him, they could use Hulk as a hero or a villain...

@Ashdm- Not sure the direction myself of where the Hulk or Bruce will end up in the film which is the exciting part about it, but IMO it would be a great element to see all the scientific minds in one movie coming up with some great idea.

@Strangemann I heard a while back a rumour of Loki brainwashing the Hulk? Personally id like to see a conflict between Banner trying to help the Avengers, but losing control of The Hulk who is obedient to Loki. Or summat like that maybe.

@HelaGood Fanks :D

If you recall from looking at Howard Stark's notes, Stark has drawn an image of a hypercube - a four dimensional cube. I wonder if this drawing is the allusion to the Pym particles and the transfer of mass in and out of three dimensions allowing for growth or shrinkage?
