Joss Whedon Talks Quicksilver And Scarlet Witch Also Reveals No Loki In AVENGERS 2

Joss Whedon recently sat in on the Empire Magazine Podcast and briefly discussed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. while elaborating a bit more on The Avengers 2 and the two confirmed new additions. Also, Joss reveals Loki is not in the film.

Joss Whedon is winding down his promotional efforts on Much Ado About Nothing but he was recently in London for the Gala Premiere of the film. Being in the UK, Joss stopped by the offices of Empire Magazine to appear on their always entertaining Empire Podcast. Here's a transcription of what he had to say concerning Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch and The Avengers 2. On S.H.I.E.L.D. Joss didn't reveal a whole lot, only offering up that, "We're building the next episodes, we start shooting in July, God help us." He did reveal that he's probably not going to direct any episodes besides the pilot. "No, not for the foreseeable. I do have a day job...," he replied when asked.

As for that day job, everyone know he's currently working on The Avengers 2 which he updated, "I've turned in a first draft, the story is very set, everybody [at Marvel's] on board with the exact movie I'm trying to make which is what worked the first time." He continued on from there, reflecting on the process of making the first Avengers, "I said 'I want to make this movie, a Marvel version of this move' and they said 'Yay' and never looked back. Well they [actually] said 'Maybe the tone' or 'Maybe this structure' but once we had it, we had it." He then added, " And I feel like we're there with [Avengers 2] which is really important."

When asked if there was still fine tuning to be done, he confirmed, "There's still 'very fine tuning' to do on the script. There are many thing that can be 'plussed' (sic) and be better and also, there's some science in it, which means I have scenes where someone says 'Science the sciency science'. So I'm like 'I'll fix that later.'"

When asked if he'll deflect any questions about Quicksilver he said of course he'll deflect any questions about the speedster and only added that 'he's in our movie and he's going to be dope.' He did actually go on to say that, "Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, very close to my heart because they were Avengers the whole time I was reading the book as a kid." For reference, the two characters first joined the team in 1965 in the issue "The Old Order Changeth" by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. They would appear off and on in various issues as members of the team up until the 80's. Continuing to describe his remembrance of the two character, Joss stated, "Oh, and sometimes they were 'EVIL' but sometimes they were good. They're very textured, they're very different from everybody else in the mix. They're not their to make things easier on The Avengers but what we do with the group once we've got them is 'squeeze.' The fun I'm having doing that is probably unseemly."

Probably the biggest revelation came from a clever, roundabout way of asking another question. When Joss was asked if there will be another humorous Old-English word like 'quim' thrown in the film. Said Joss, "Everyone is going to be looking for the Loki-Hulk smash moment and you'll be looking for quim. No, first of all, imitating what I did before is the surest way to do it not as well. Second of all, Loki's not there to say those terrible things. Although I do think we should bring the word back, not as an insult, it's just a nice word." So there you have it, Loki is not in The Avengers 2.

Good to know Loki won't be back, it would be too repetitive. After thor 2, he should take a break.

I wonder who the villain will be. At first it seem like Thanos would be the villain but recent reports seem that he will be in the background again. Korvac but I think he might be the villain for GOTG...

They should have put Loki away earlier so that he has a grand return. Bringing him back in THOR2 definitely strains his appeal. But if he's directed good, it should be great. Branagh was able to direct Hiddeston into the direction that made him a fan favorite. Whedon makes him less imposing and not as layered as in THOR, and I don't know what they have planned for him in Dark World. But direction is key. And they definitely need to shelve him for many films to come.

I bet my bottom dollar that Loki bites the dust in Thor 2. The question is if he dies will he be reanimated in a woman, himself, or go the kid Loki route.

Just don't do that incest bullshit.

Knowing Fox they will use it.

Actually, knowing Fox, they will not acknowledge a Scarlet Witch, the name Pietro, that he is Mags son, etc.

LotT26: Zemo shoudl face Captain America not Crossbones. Crossbones looks to be no more than a henchman in Winter Soldier. Zemo should lead that group and he's the one who should face Captain America. I like the rest of your picks though.

Loki won't die cause thanos will capture him for not getting the cube or earth or maybe thanos will kill Loki and that will give thor motive to kill thanos

Masters of Evil cant work in a 2 and a half hour movie, there just isn't enough time to do so, you cant develop all the characters in the same movie without making some unmemorable background fodder like in the X-Men movie, it's a concept that works better in a video game. Also why dafuq are people bringing up the incestous relationship between Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch when there's no damn chance of that ever remotely happening yet alone it even being considered due to Disney. Absolutely pointless to bring up in the first place. Again Joss isn't telling us anything that we dont already know.

Yeah, about the incest thing. That was one thing I wasn't too crazy about with the Ultimates. Same with Hawkeyes uniform, to a much lesser extent. I'm with you guys, I don't want to see that portrayal in The Avengers2.

It would be kind of cool to see Quicksilver & Scarlet Witch either be on the Masters of Evil or even sneak onto the team like Wonder Man originally did, betrayed the Avengers only to both have a change of heart.

Judging from what Josh has hinted at I'm betting the 2nd movie ends with the team defeated… As a cliffhanger

Scarlet Witch vs Hawkeye? Really? She WISHED mutants out of existance, shes uhmmm, i dont know, kind of friggen powerful!
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 6/14/2013, 9:08 PM
I would love to see a Hulk Abomination (further mutated with the ears) rematch.

All the match ups you put down Lord of Thorns look good, with the caveat that to use Crossbones the character would have to to be reworked from the comics. I agreed Zemo would be a better fit, and after all a better leader if it in fact it is the Masters of Evil.

Wally, that would be absolutely awesome! Someone out of the triangle of Jane Foster, Loki, or Odin is probably not surviving the next movie. I could live with all 3 biting the bullet.

@Alexander: Soairse Ronan isn't in negotiations with Marvel. They're just using her as a model for Scarlet Witch like it was said that Warner Bros did with Charlie Hunnam and The Flash. Doesn't necessarily mean they're in negotiations. Still think it'd be a mistake.
SpideyQuad
SpideyQuad - 6/14/2013, 9:14 PM
Yes sikwon, but not originally. A matter of fact she had quite a difficult time controlling her powers for decades. All she knew was she had the ability too alter probability, but not choose how or the outcome. That some BS or PW (poor writing) that "the one who won't be named" got away with.

Pretty much has been his MO since than as a matter of fact. (then this, bend hiss, cough-cough)

Since marvel can't do the mutant background, what if thanos gets the infinity gauntlet in thor:tdw and he could create anything. Maybe he creates quicksilver and Scarlett Witch to take the avengers out but they end up turning against thanos or he creates them to spy on the avengers and to find there weakness. Just was thinking of that and thought it sound kind of cool.
