BATGIRL Director Tried To Retrieve Footage From Canceled Movie Only To Find Warner Bros. Had Deleted It

Warner Bros. Discovery's decision to cancel the Batgirl movie sent shockwaves throughout Hollywood, but those of you hoping to mount a #ReleaseTheSnyderCut-style campaign are likely to be disappointed.

Zack Snyder managed to make headlines on a frequent basis by sharing black and white stills from his cut of Justice League. We've since learned that the filmmaker basically absconded with his version of the DC Comics adaptation, but Batgirl helmers Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi won't have the opportunity to do the same.

In the video below, Fallah confirms that they tried to retrieve footage from the movie, only to discover it was already gone!

"No, we have nothing. Adil called and told me, 'Go ahead! Shoot everything on your phone!' I went on the server...everything was gone," he reveals. "We were [like], 'F**ing shit!' We did not [even] keep [the scenes] with Batman in [them]."

Later, the Ms. Marvel directors confirmed that work was far from finished on Batgirl, explaining that they still had additional scenes to shoot. VFX was also absent, so even if they'd wanted to, there was no way to release (or leak) a completed cut of the movie starring Leslie Grace, Michael Keaton, Brendan Fraser, and J.K. Simmons.

"The guys from Warner Bros. told us it was not a talent problem on our part or the actress [Leslie Grace], or even the quality of the movie. We were right in the middle of editing. There was a lot of work to get done, so it was not like the movie was finished! Warner Bros. told us the cancellation was a strategic change, a shifting in management so they could save some bucks."

Like it or not, Batgirl is never going to see the light of day. As part of a series of cost-cutting measures, the $90 million movie has been shelved and while there may be a future for Grace as Barbara Gordon, this origin story will never be seen. It's tremendous shame, but something fans are powerless to change.

WB isn't playing around. They cancelled Young Justice too...SMH

@REMIMARKS - Fandom already once went all Castiel and dragged the show back from hell, we can do it again. Also, a good change it will be picked up by another network, it is known to be a highly praised animated show with a storyline ready to go for next season.

@Odin - WB owns it. If they don’t want to shop it around they won’t. Cancelling it at their home network to save costs, nah, like the rest of the stuff they’re shelving it’ll get dumped completely. If they wanted to shop it around they would have done it publicly or just thrown it back to Netflix.

@REMIMARKS - ...and now I have doubts once more about Discovery and DC's future. Again.

I'll never believe a word WB says after the whole TSC fiasco 😭💀
Origame

@ClungesForever - this is from the directors who have been bad mouthing the decision.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 9:16 AM
@Origame - I would rather believe them than the studio that used the death of a man's daughter to cover up the fact they fired him, then proceeded to tell us the version of the film from the earlier JL trailers didn't exist & would never be released only to then release that said film.

Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 9:58 AM
@ClungesForever - again, this is the directors who have publicly shamed wb for this and also are shaming them now for deleting the footage. These guys aren't representing wb when they say this.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 11:20 AM
@Origame - I never said they were. WB told us the movie was too bad to release and I'm stating I don't believe them because of their lying track record.
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 11:23 AM
@ClungesForever - ...then why are you saying this on an article about what the directors are saying.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 11:37 AM
@Origame - because I'd rather believe what they say about the situation over what WB says. I never claimed they're talking for WB I just don't believe anything WB say.
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 11:47 AM
@ClungesForever - they're not even saying anything that contradicts the reasons given by wb. Just that the footage is deleted
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 12:14 PM
@Origame - maybe you're not reading all of their quotes, they state that WB said it had nothing to do with the quality. I believe they were told that. However, I don't believe the excuses Wb put out to the general pubic (like the claim that the movie was terrible in quality).
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 12:16 PM
@ClungesForever - so the directors of a film believe their movie was great?

Shocking!

@Origame - I get it lol.... you have no point 🤣 good day
Origame
Origame - 8/23/2022, 12:33 PM
@ClungesForever - ...my point is that you have no point. Thanks to the merger it's not even the same people in charge of wb. And what I was saying before is there's a clear bias from these directors. Of course they're gonna say the movie they made was high quality. What else did you expect them to say?
BigPhilbowski
BigPhilbowski - 8/23/2022, 2:29 PM
@ClungesForever - it didn't exist at the time. That's why it took over 100m to finish.
TheClungerine
TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 3:32 PM
@BigPhilbowski - if it didn't exist there'd be nothing to finish 🤨

That's a pretty bold move, and makes me think WBD knew about cancelling it for a while now. Think it's strange to just delete everything if you just made the decision. Atleast keep it for if you change your mind, it's not like digital storage is expensive these days
Reginator
Reginator - 8/23/2022, 6:26 AM
@bkmeijer1 - if you are never going to release it for insurance reasons the last thing you need is directors stealing the digital media and releasing parts of it.

TheClungerine - 8/23/2022, 6:29 AM
@Reginator - this. They were 100% commited to making this a tax write off

@Reginator - exactly. The lack of common sense in these comments is baffling.
