BATGIRL Star Brendan Fraser Comments On The Movie's Cancelation And Praises Leslie Grace's Performance

Batgirl star Brendan Fraser has commented for the first time about the movie's shocking cancellation by Warner Bros. Discovery, sharing high praise for Leslie Grace's work in the movie as Barbara Gordon.

Batgirl was cancelled by Warner Bros. Discovery in the midst of post-production, shocking Hollywood insiders and comic book fans alike. The movie would have featured Barbara Gordon squaring off with Brendan Fraser's villainous Firefly, a role that could have been something very different and exciting for the Doom Patrol star in the DC Extended Universe.

Fraser recently appeared at the Emerald City Comic Con, and The PopVerse asked for his reaction to the news. The actor chose his words carefully, choosing to praise Leslie Grace's performance as Batgirl.

"Leslie Grace is her namesake. She’s dynamic," Fraser said of the In the Heights star. "She gave a great performance. She’s a stone cold professional. You’re going to see more from her. And I’m looking forward to it."

Fraser was surprisingly non-plussed about the decision to scrap Batgirl, though he's been in Hollywood long enough to know that this sort of thing can and does happen. Asked what lessons he'd actually share with his younger self, he responded, "It’s going to be all right. Hang in there. It’s possible. You’re doing okay. You have nothing to prove."

That sounds a lot like what he's probably told Grace as well. Batgirl's cancellation comes at a time when her career is really starting to take off, but being the lead in a superhero movie deemed not good enough to release (by a studio that's released the likes of Suicide Squad and Justice League) won't do her any favours.

It's become clear that there's no saving Batgirl, and any sort of #ReleaseTheSnyderCut-style campaign isn't going to work with the new regime at Warner Bros.

There have been rumblings that Grace may have been offered the chance to play Batgirl elsewhere in the DCEU, though whether she will consider accepting is another matter. A lot of actors and filmmakers are likely to have serious reservations about working with the studio moving forward, that's for sure.

Give my boy a legacy sequel to the first two mummy pictures. Ignore the third, and that godawful reboot. Imagine wasting all that money on that shit when we could have had more Brendan Fraser.

Get all the originals back, and have Imhotep as the villain once more

Good guy, no dramatics in his comments. I read he got a six-minute standing ovation at the premiere of his film The Whale at the Venice Film Festival. Early buzz is that his performance is Oscar nom-worthy.

@GeneralZod - i always thought Brendan Fraser had it in him. He just had some bad luck with work after the mummy franchise. He’s come a long way from encino man. ( I can’t believe that movie is 30 years old already, I still remember the promos from comic books back in the day)

@GeneralZod - Here's 45 seconds of it. Just saw this before I came to this article which was very nice to see.

@xfactor - His ex wife was also responsible for Brenden's post-Mummy disappearance. The chick completely screwed him emotionally and financially. Fraser has always been a stand-up guy and didn't deserve any of the horrid treatment that woman caused him. The guy has been though some tough times.

@sully - that’s heartbreaking. I did not know that at all. Kudos to the man for how far he’s come

@GeneralZod - I wonder if that means it's good though? Alot of folks seem to think that a long standing ovation at festivals are because people don't want to be the first to stop, so it just goes on and on. At least that's the way folks on this site look at it.

Slightly OT: Brendan getting a 6-minute standing ovation for his performance after a showing of Darren Aronofsky's The Whale at the Venice Film Festival:

It's great to see him get praise for The Whale, so I guess the Brenassaince is still going. Still, I really wanted to see him in a villain role like Firefly.

And for some reason, I still want an adventure movie with Brendan Fraser, Nathan Fillion and Jeremy Renner.

@bkmeijer1 - the Brenassaince hasn’t even started yet. Hold on tight. We’re in for a good ride.
