BATGIRL Star Leslie Grace Could Return As Barbara Gordon In A Future DC Comics Movie

Although it sounds like it's early days, a new report suggests that Warner Bros. Discovery execs have reached out to Leslie Grace about the possibility of returning as Batgirl in a future DC movie.

The news that Warner Bros. Discovery decided to shelve its $90 million Batgirl movie entirely while it was in the late stages of post-production came as a surprise to everyone, but it must have been crushingly disappointing for Leslie Grace, who was poised to reach new levels of stardom after garnering acclaim for her breakout performance in recent musical In The Heights.

Grace responded to the announcement with a refreshingly upbeat Instagram post, and it sounds like her positive outlook may have paid off.

According to Variety, “newly installed Warner Bros. Pictures Group chiefs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, in seeking to mend fences with Batgirl star Leslie Grace, are entertaining the possibility of having her continue to play Batgirl in a future DC film.”

Any postential deal is far from set in stone, however, as the reports adds that Grace could be courted for "another Warner Bros. production."

The trade doesn't mention which project we might see Barbara Gordon suit-up in, but our guess would be the solo Black Canary movie, which is still in active development (Jurnee Smollett was reportedly set to make a cameo appearance as Dinah Lance in Batgirl).

We've heard conflicting reports about Batgirl's cancellation, but all signs point to WBD chief David Zaslav scrapping the movie after screenings of a “10-week director’s cut” led to middling test scores. Apparently, it was decided that the reshoots needed to expand the HBO Max project into a big-screen proposition were "deemed to be a waste of money."

Whatever happens, the chances of us ever laying eyes on the Batgirl movie are between slim and none, so let's hope Grace is given the opportunity to reprise the role at some point.

I’d be okay if we didn’t. I don’t understand why we have to have every Batgirl be a bubbly Batgirl of Burnside now. The Batgirl movie looked a bit too CW for my taste. Id rather just keep The Batman going.

@B1ackManta - I wasn't a big fan of the actual Batgirl of Burnside run, the bubbly feel you mentioned made it feel more like a Year One type story than a follow up to Gail Simone's PTSD focused run, but I do think the homemade looking purple suit with the yellow Doc Martins has become instantly iconic and used all over media for a reason.

It's visually catchy, stands out from the rest of the Batfamily's looks (unlike variations of black, grey, blue, and yellow, all Batman colors), and looks like something a librarian who wants to be a superhero might put together, which is why I prefer the look and personality of Burnside in an origin story like the movie as opposed to after she had worked with Batman for years.

I mean why does it seem like too much to just destroy this universe and start from ground zero?? All new actors in every role and then implement the Multiverse later on down the road with few "survivors" from this universe's destruction. Create an all new Justice League.

@TheShape9859 - Maybe the actors are still under contract? Kind of like those rumors we're hearing about Marvel being contractually bound to use the Fox-Men actors until 2025.

Tomorrow Headlines for Josh:

- New Batgirl movie starring [SPOILER] Affleck as Batman confirmed!!!

- In light of recent 3-option Ezra Miller plan of WB, here are "10 reasons why they should take that path and 5 why they definitely shouldn't" of each one of those options!

If I was WB, I'd hire a documentary crew right now to document this whole thing, get footage and interviews and as much behind the scenes content now and a director who will dig into this whole thing... because in 5 or 10 years this story and the Micheal Keaton footage could be an Oscar winning documentary for WB.

@TheVandalore - also make a full on film production while we're at it. To play Ezra Miller, get Elliot page.

I genuinely don't get why people are so heated about this. If you saw that batman suit, that'll show you the kind of production this is. It's very much a made for streaming production. And hbo max was pushing for it to be a theatrical release because they didn't want it.

Only thing I kinda get is the flash situation, but the budget there is too large to not even consider the possibility of releasing.

That person is trying his best to mend the situation with her and also salvage a little the image of the company. Must be very daunting.

If she accepts I think it should be in a capacity where she's more than just a cameo.

She certainly needs a second chance because them cancelling her movie isn't remotely fair.

Also Titans and Doom Patrol may be next on the chopping block...

I'm sorry for her, but she got paid, so if there is to be another Batgirl, this time take more time to do the series justice and maybe try doing another Batgirl version instead, maybe Cassandra Cain.
BlackIceJoe
BlackIceJoe - 8/11/2022, 9:29 PM
@Waddles - I hear you, yet at the same time Cassandra Cain has some really great story material and I'll be honest with how long WB is taking to get their DC films up and running I doubt I'll be alive to see them.

If we have to introduce Barbara first, then Stephanie, then finally get around to Cassandra that will be easily 15 to 20 years from bow.

I hate bringing up Marvel, yet it has taken them 20 years to really start bringing in the lesser known characters, so how long will it take DC to get their act together, if they have to go in the Right order?
