BATGIRL: Warner Bros. Discovery May Save Only $15 Million - $20 Million By Never Releasing The Movie

Talk about adding insult to injury, eh? Warner Bros. pulled the plug on Batgirl in the midst of post-production, and it turns out the studio will save little to nothing by never releasing the movie...

Warner Bros. Discovery may have made what they believe was a wise business decision by scrapping Batgirl, but it's one that's led to a huge amount of backlash online. DC Comics fans are livid that one of the few movies they actually have to look forward to has been axed, especially when it was set to put the spotlight on a character who has been sorely underutilized on screen.

Later today, the studio will hold its quarterly earnings call, and we anticipate an explanation and some clarification on the DC Extended Universe's future then. It may not be good news, of course, and this Batgirl update from Deadline is likely to further incense fans.

The trade explains that the movie was scrapped now because the recent acquisition of Warner Bros. by Discovery allows them to take advantage of a "purchase accounting" manoeuvre that allows them to not have to carry the past losses on its books as they attempt to find $3 billion in what's described as "cost-saving synergies."

Batgirl's budget did balloon from $70 million to $90 million thanks to reshoots and the pandemic, but insiders reveal that cancelling the movie only stands to save Warner Bros. $15 million - $20 million. That's hardly a dent on that $3 billion, but with sweeping changes about to be made to HBO Max (it may join DC Universe in the streaming service graveyard imminently), the movie clearly didn't fit into future small screen plans.

We also know CEO David Zaslav felt it wasn't good enough for theaters (he obviously skipped most of the DC slate since Man of Steel), so things are slowly starting to add up.

Fans have started campaigning to #SaveBatgirl, but by writing it off as part of those tax breaks, Warner Bros. can't legally monetize the movie in any way. That makes any sort of release not just unlikely, but outside the realm of possibility at this stage.

Perhaps it will be leaked online? Failing that, we'd be shocked if the screenplay doesn't eventually surface!

Complete morons. WB been sold 3 times in the last few years ...

Nolan is smart as [frick] for jumping ship

Well, if the rumors are to be believed, the short term money is not what WB execs were as concerned about. The word is, the material was so bad/"irredeemable" that they were worried it would hurt the ip long term.

That said, WB has been self sabotaging it's own brand for over a decade in a lot of people's opinions, so take that for what it's worth.

Looking at the billions that the MCU has made off of thier C list characters must be driving these guys nuts. GOTG is on thier third movie and they can't get Green Lantern off the ground.

This is a good thing.

@Goldboink - Yeah. It's gotta be pretty frustrating, but it's all on WB's leadership team imo. Poor/no planning or foresight.

Marvel is scoring touchdowns with their 3rd string quarterback and DC can't even get a first down with all their starters in the game.

@Feralwookiee - You can tell that's a false rumor because if they cared about hurting an IP long term they'd have said something about Ezra Miller by now.

The team was looking for short term gain but just didn't understand the properties they were sitting on. They scrambled to catch up and hired Snyder to oversee the whole thing but he was a mistake. Nolan too was part of the process but he fundamentally disrespects most of the IP's that WB was sitting on.

They need to start from scratch in the worst way and stop cranking out shitty product done on the cheap.

@Feralwookiee - Then in that case they need to scrap Flash too.

I don't disagree. I haven't been motivated to see one of the DC fims in a long time. This one is and easy outlier and they had to make a decision in a timely fashion to do whatever tax voodoo they are doing. This has only been a thing since early April. Black Adam is committed but Flash may be on the chopping block, depending on how Ezra's mental health plays out.

How Ezra's mental health pans out?

Damage is done. On video chocking a woman and is being accused of grooming and terrorizing the people of Hawaii.

No amount of silence will fix this🤡🤡🤡

Silence isn't the answer. Publicly going into rehab, fessing up to the crazy shit, coming out of the closet, public acts of contrition. Silence is the same as doubling down on the crazy.

It's a right mess is what it is with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line.

Do the studios not have private dicks anymore?

Yeah OK, that's dump. Just release it and package the marketing cost with Scoob. The family friendly movie will help recoup someone the cost surely...

I dunno. Better business minds than mine are obviously the calls, but this just keeps getting worse.

I think the cancellation had more to do with the actual content of the movie, as they're probably moving in a completely different direction that releasing it will just confuse people.

resshot what you need and release it. even at the cost of losing money. this is terrible bad optics for the studio, last time that a studio decided to shelve a movie was in the 70s with jerry lewis.

Zaslav might be a great accountant, but doesnt know sh!t about PR

canceling the first latino lead superhero movie? somethign that not even marvel has done so far?

Even if the movie is bad, everyone will forget about it in a matter of months and move on with their lives (new mutants anyone?)

Keeping it unreleased will create this sort of mythical snowballing effect

@NicolausCopernicus - I think you're overselling how many people know about this movie. I think if CBM represented the entire population, that'd be a fair point, but the general public did not even know this movie existed, so it'll be a minority of people who hold it in such mythical status. If this No Way Home or a Harry Potter movie it'd be a whole different ballgame.
