BATGIRL Was Reportedly Compared To A TV Pilot And X-MEN: DARK PHOENIX During Test Screening

We keep hearing conflicting reports about why Warner Bros. decided to scrap Batgirl, but a reliable insider has now shed some light on how audiences reportedly reacted to the movie at that test screening.

It's been established that Batgirl had a single test screening before Warner Bros. decided to cancel the movie, with the movie supposedly scoring in the same region as Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The quality of the film definitely appears to have come into play here, as CEO David Zaslav feels it wasn't cinematic enough for a theatrical release and was too expensive for streaming.

Hollywood insider Matthew Belloni has now shared what he's heard about that test screening on his podcast, The Town, and it sounds like those audience members are at least partially to blame for Zaslav's perception of the movie!

Apparently, this screening took place when Warner Bros. was still trying to figure out what to do with Batgirl. He would add, "the executives, Walter Hamada of DC, and some of the others there ask the audience, 'Did this feel big?' and clearly they were trying to figure out whether it felt like it deserved a theatrical release and the consensus was absolutely not."

"[My source] said it played like a TV pilot, the stakes were very small," Belloni continues. "He said it felt a little like Dark Phoenix."

That's not exactly high praise.

Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah delivered a well-received hit with Bad Boys For Life, while their Ms. Marvel premiere and finale have been unanimously praised. It's hard to believe they somehow went off the rails with Batgirl, though it's possible budgetary restrictions may have meant there was only so much they could do with Barbara Gordon.

As things stand, Batgirl will never see the light of day and a "ReleaseTheSnyderCut"-style campaign is unlikely to change that. As a result, we may never know the full story, though it would be a surprise if those involved with the movie don't eventually decide to speak out regarding their experiences.

How are you feeling about Batgirl's cancellation?

I wonder if they missed the point and just wanted to get to the Avengers-level event without appreciating smaller-scale stories.

@Waddles - BTW, that movie needs to be put in the national film registry for how influential it's been since 2008.

“the stakes were very small…”

Yep! Saving a single human life just isn’t what the drones care about. 🙄.

Look…if it stunk it stunk.

But you know why shows like ST:SNW dominated? Because the Stakes WERE NOT End of the world scenarios (that a million other reasons).

Not every IP should deal with stakes that intense.

When your big movie turns into a punchline it's time to find something else to do with your time.

Most expensive rejected “TV pilot” ever?

I honestly don't have a good feeling about this DC reboot. From what I know about Zaslav, it sounds like this new DC universe is essentially going to be what if Ike Perlmutter ran the MCU instead of Feige.

@MCUKnight11 -
I'm going to have to say that what they have now is more of a Perlmutter universe than anything else. Tons of cheap product, very little plan. I think this is the best outcome.

This movie would have been roasted on this site after its release, yet people are lamenting its cancelation. We really are a society like likes to get fired up to get fired up.

If you forget for a moment about the comic, than Dark Phoenix on its own wasn't such a bad movie, you know, all things considered...

But yeah, what little we've seen about Batgirl wasn't that good imo.

The movie will probably """"leak""" some day, but for now i don't think i'll lose any sleep over it, feeling bad for the cast is a different matter tho.

Sigh....

Especially when i see those happy pics with Grace and Sasha...

If it got the same score as Shazam 2, just maybe that's not a good sign about Shazam 2???

How are the stakes small but you compared it to a film where the stakes involve a cosmic entity and aliens? IDK maybe they meant quality-wise.

Batgirl's stakes shouldn't be world-ending or even Gotham City ending. They should be ground level.

@GhostDog - When they mean the "stakes" it's not usually related to the story but also to the character as well. So it may be that there just wasn't enough to feel like this character has a lot of high stakes. She may have been a bit of a Mary Sue.

@MachinimaMan - I wonder if that’s the case. She looked pretty bloody and beaten in BTS so I would hope she went through it

I don't believe for a second the studio that let JK Rowling write three Fantastic Beasts movies suddenly started caring about quality.

@Fares - I've collected all 11 volumes so far, which is considered the "first part" and tells a complete story. it's really good, crazy good, the author has a very "western" eye when it comes to grounding the very silly and over-the-top elements into some kind of tangible reality. the tone is also very western, it has a bit of a Tarantino vibe at times, others a bit of Kubrick, it has some conspiracy/mistery elements, and then there's of course all the over-the-top japanese action stuff. oh, and a lot of blood, like, A LOT, literal raining blood fom the sky moments.
and the main character is certainly, erm, different from what you expect when you hear "japanese teen action hero", which in a way kinda makes him a more sincere depiction of one.
