Glen Powell Says He Has A "Wild Take" On BATMAN After Revealing Superhero Role He Missed Out On

Twisters star Glen Powell has admitted that, while he has no plans to star in a superhero movie, Batman would be the character he'd most like to put a unique spin on. He also reveals the roles he lost...

Glen Powell's star is on the rise. After wowing moviegoers with Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, he'll take centre stage this summer in Hit Man and Twisters. Surely a superhero role is next?

You'd think so, but as GQ points out in a new profile on the actor, "Powell has no interest in playing a superhero." This comes after we recently learned he's also not interested in "Marvel fare."

Taking a journalist on a tour of the Warner Bros. lot, Powell pointed out the new Superman logo on the door of James Gunn's office. However, he wasn't among the actors who tried out for the DCU's new Man of Steel.

"But I was on the set of Twisters with [newly-anointed Clark Kent] David Corenswet when he got the call," he reveals. "He’s a hustler and he deserves it."

"I was always a Batman guy," Powell later added. "I would have a wild take on Batman. It definitely would not be like a Matt Reeves tone - it’d probably be closer to Keaton."

With Robert Pattinson expected to continue playing Batman, it would be no bad thing for the DCU's Caped Crusader to be vastly different (he'll also be a father to Damian Wayne, a.k.a. Robin). For now, Powell's main claim to DC fame is the fact that "I get my head smashed in by Bane in The Dark Knight Rises."

Elsewhere in the piece, it's revealed he "screwed up" his audition to play the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Captain America...he also came close to taking on the lead role in 2018's Solo: A Star Wars Story. "I can joke about it now," he recalls, "[but] I blew that final audition."

The Flash director Andy Muschietti is helming The Brave and the Bold, though DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has said on multiple occasions that Batman isn't close to being cast.

"This is the introduction of the DCU's Batman," he said when the movie was first announced. "This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman's actual son who we didn't know existed for the first eight to 10 years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He's a little son of a bitch."

"He's my favorite Robin. It's based on the Grant Morrison comic book's run, which is one of my favorite Batman runs, and we are putting that all together right now."

His fellow DC Studios co-CEO chimed in to add, "And this is obviously a feature film, and it's going to feature other members of the extended 'Bat-family', just because we feel like they've been left out of the Batman stories in the theater for far too long."

Would you like to see Powell suit up as the DCU's Dark Knight?

Well speaking about wild takes, I have one for green arrow.

Basically my idea is Oliver queen is an adrenaline junkie. When he crashes on the island, he's facing off against these pirates which not only hones his archery skills but also gives him essentially a new high to chase. So he goes back to star city fighting criminals for the rush. This even leads to an interesting encounter with laurel lance, who at first is supportive of his crime fighting (possibly hinting at her becoming black canary), until she learns why he's fighting crime then becomes disgusted in him.

@Origame - I think they would need to establish that he was already an expert archer too. Not Clint Barton level but a rich kid who enjoys archery and bow hunting. You could even have the reason he was traveling be tied to a hunting trip which would explain how he has a bow in the island.

Bow hunting and archery is pretty mainstream today thanks to Saint Rogies so they absolutely need to make that part of Oliver’s story. Especially when you consider he’s rich kid who would logically have access to the best training and tools at a young age

@BruceWayng - Could establish it by saying his father made him go on hunting trips using only a Bow and Arrow, to try and teach a wreckless Oliver about patience and discipline.

@BruceWayng - yeah. Basically the idea is he was a champion archer at his private school but didn't develop his skills further until on the island when it was literally life and death. But from that experience he becomes Clint Barton good when he returns to do his superhero thing.

@BobGarlen - thats interesting, but the point is he initially becomes a superhero for the thrill of it. Your idea would probably be better for a more traditional green arrow, where he's humbled by his time on the island and comes back with the goal of helping people.

@Origame - I just figured it would be an easy out to explain why he's even remotely skilled at archery when he gets on the island.
Origame
Origame - 5/28/2024, 10:53 AM
@BobGarlen - oh no, I get that. Just saying the story has to flow well with this as well. If he's taught archery for patience and discipline, it doesn't make sense to have him use that when he's at his most reckless and impulsive.

I suppose it's possible to make his archery skills a twist so by the climax he remembers why his father taught him archery, which leads to a lesson learned. But honestly I think it'd be better to not lean into the parents too much for this story (that is a massive cliché after all).

He’d be great for Hal Jordan.

@soberchimera - He would, but my choice for Hal is Miles Teller. I honestly think Glenn fits Guy Gardner way better.

@BobGarlen - I have never seen a less charismatic actor in a lead Superhero role than Miles Teller in Fantastic Four. I am a big GL fan and I see nothing in that guy that resembles Hal Jordan. Maybe Kyle.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 5/28/2024, 10:55 AM
@BobGarlen - Miles Teller in less superhero movies is preferable, I’m sure he’s not eager to be in one after F4ntastic.
HermanM
HermanM - 5/28/2024, 11:02 AM
@soberchimera - I agree. I do not get the appeal of Miles Teller in anything at all. He also looks nothing like Hal...he looks like Rachel Maddow.
BobGarlen
BobGarlen - 5/28/2024, 11:18 AM
@Baf - I feel like he already played Hal in Top Gun Maverick. Judge him based on that at least. Fant4stic was a s--- show, considering what was going in I don't think any actor could have done well.

@Baf - Teller's a better fit for The Maker than Reed.
ObserverIO

@soberchimera - Too young for an older Hal Jordan. If they want someone that looks like the sort of age Tom Cruise is then I would just get Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise is and has always been the perfect Hal Jordan.
soberchimera
soberchimera - 5/28/2024, 3:19 PM
@ObserverIO - They should totally go with a younger Hal Jordan though, considering the GL franchise has never sold better or been more popular than when Geoff Johns put him back at the forefront. Even the Robert Venditti run and now Jeremy Adams run proves he's still a popular character.
ObserverIO
ObserverIO - 5/28/2024, 4:17 PM
@soberchimera - Maybe, but with an older Guy Gardner and a TV show with both Hal and John Stewart and rumors that they're doing an older Hal Jordan, I think that we should probably be looking at elder statesmen.

I can’t really see him as Batman but you never know…

Him not having any plans to play a superhero doesn’t mean he isn’t interested since all it takes is the right character , creative team and money haha.

My DC picks for him are…

He'd work fine as:

The Flash
Aquaman
Booster Gold
Batman
Hawkman

so, the dude's not interested. fair enough. there are plenty of great actors that just don't desire a superhero film. Most of them don't sh1t on those films, they just like doing other types of films. (DiCaprio, um....other dudes....)

nothing but respect for Powell.

I like this actor. He has that aura and flare about him. He was really obnoxious in top gun maverick but he played it down to a tee. I have to agree with him about Batman also. I like a batman who’s unhinged which is why Affleck is my favourite Batman but Keaton is a close second. Keaton’s batman was quite ruthless to a degree.

Can you please write these articles in a manner where I don't need to read all the words and sentences, and I can just skip to the important part? I don't care about anything other than what's in the quotes. That's what I'm looking for. Or, write the headlines more accurately. Where they reflect what's actually contained in the article. That way, when I get to the end, I understand if what was promised by the headline was delivered. Or not.

I hope gunn'd change his mind on having a Batman with a son already...

why can't we just have a proper solo Batman in a shared DC movie verse..? We didn't get it one with Ben, so...why can't we just have it now under Gunn..??

didn't gunn learn anything from snyder's FAILURE..?

@CloakDagger - i would love to see the Bat Family on screen. It's a fresh venue for the character that everyone loves in the comics and cartoons.

Bring in Nightwing, Oracle, Batgirl(Cassandra), even do Red Hood though I think Red Hoods origin deserves its own movie. But I'm totally for this, do the bat fam, do batman that isn't a pure loner.

Batman has a great supporting cast and it should be utilized.

You don't need to play a superhero to become a top actor in Hollywood, I'd love for him to play as Cyclops but I'd rather see him in other successful movies. Same with all the the up and comers, no stupid type casting. Zendaya made it out unscathed, Florence will be just fine lol
