THE DARK KNIGHT RISES Star Joseph Gordon-Levitt Reveals Whether There Was Ever Plans For A ROBIN Spin-Off

Joseph Gordon-Levitt played Robin John Blake in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises and now reveals whether there was every any talk of him reprising his role as the Nolanverse's new Batman. Read on for details!

The Dark Knight Rises introduced a heroic cop, John Blake, who became an ally of both Batman and Jim Gordon. After being made Detective, John's full name was revealed as "Robin John Blake," a nod to the Batman's comic book sidekick.

Making it even more noteworthy was the fact Bruce Wayne left a package for Robin leading him to the Batcave. The implication was that he'd become Gotham City's new Batman, picking up where the believed-dead Caped Crusader left off.

There's been a great deal of talk over the years about a possible Batman 4 which would have continued Robin's story. It never came to pass, of course, and Bruce was reintroduced four years later - with Ben Affleck playing a new version of the character - in 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

Talking to Inverse, Joseph Gordon-Levitt was asked if he was ever made privy to any spin-off or sequel plans.

"Nolan was making a trilogy," he explained. "He never wanted to make any more movies. This was an ending to his trilogy. It’s funny, we look back on it now with the context of the Marvel Cinematic Universe - everything is a sequel to a sequel to a sequel."

"But back in those olden days, doing a trilogy was a lot, and that was how it was thought of."

Talking of Marvel, Levitt has been in line for a few MCU roles over the years, including Ant-Man's Scott Lang and Guardians of the Galaxy's Star-Lord. Asked about missing out on those, he'd only say, "Yeah, people like to talk. I understand why it's fun to talk about these kinds of things. I don’t really have anything to add to this. I’m sorry."

The Dark Knight Rises, directed by Christopher Nolan, is the final instalment in his Batman trilogy, released in 2012. The film stars Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside a stellar cast including Tom Hardy (Bane), Anne Hathaway (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Michael Caine (Alfred Pennyworth), and Gary Oldman (Commissioner Gordon).

Set eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne has retired from his vigilante role and lives in seclusion. Gotham City enjoys a period of relative peace until the arrival of Bane, a formidable and ruthless mercenary. Bane's plan to destroy Gotham forces Bruce to don the Batman mantle once more. He teams up with Selina Kyle, a skilled cat burglar with ambiguous motives, to save the city.

Would you have liked to see more of "Robin" after The Dark Knight Rises?

Not gonna lie...he would make a GREAT Nightwing.

But it's probably too late for all that

He makes a good point about making a trilogy being a lot.

I think it really reflects in the quality a lot of the time, people cared more about bringing a good story to screen, not that there weren't duds, but studios weren't as in a rush to pump out as many of these movies as fast as they can as they seemed to be today.

It's turned into a case of less is more for me. Quality over quantity.

@TrentCrimm - Just now I was looking at Marvel's future list of films, and I realized that for the next 3 years and for the foreseeable future I am not at all interested in seeing any of the films they're gonna be putting out. The last marvel film I watched was Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Before that, it was Thor love and thunder, which I regret.

I realized 30 minutes ago that I'm completely done with Marvel lol

@HappyMan1 -

I'm finding myself in th same boat.
Im excited for Deadpool & Wolverine, and I'm excited to see what the MCU X-Men will be.

But there's not really much else coming up that I'm clamoring for.

I don't think I even finished Guardians of the Galaxy 3 if I'm being honest. I did watch all of Thor Love and Thunder but that was the last one I watched entirely.

I did really enjoy both seasons of Loki though. I'm not completely done with Marvel, but I've reached the point where I'm ok with skipping the shows/movies I don't like. If something comes out that looks like I'll like it, I'll watch it, but I'm not hooked on the MCU like I used to be.

@TrentCrimm - If James Gunn screws this up, he's an idiot. Because the MCU is vulnerable right now. This is the perfect opportunity for the DCU to rise.

He better not screw this up.

I never got the sense they were planning or wanting to do a sinks or Robin movie

The ending just highlighted the idea that there will always be a Batman who will rise when the city needs him. Because Batman is a symbol, more than just a man

They were thinking of using him in BvS as Batman. But not as John Blake Batman, as Bruce Wayne Batman.

Get this man in another CBM stat! I think Levitt is a great talent, and it would be fun to see him in a nice permanent role in the MCU or DCU. Not quite sure who, but he'd be a great addition to any film.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 6/27/2024, 11:32 AM
@RedFury - yeah , I feel like he’s too old now for certain roles I could see him as

He could have been a good Spidey and funnily enough ,Nightwing too back in the day.

I know he was dome’s choice for Reed Richards but I could never really see it.
RedFury
RedFury - 6/27/2024, 1:14 PM
@TheVisionary25 - him as spidey or Nightwing would have been perfect when he was the right age for those roles. And to your point I don't think I could see him as Reed either. Even with him being older now, there's still a certain youthfulness to him that I don't think would fit Reed.

He seems like he would fit a street level hero well just based on how he comes across in his roles though. I can't really think of anyone off the top of my head, but seeing him in the movie Power makes me think he'd do well being that on the ground type of guy.

Thank god they didn’t tie this franchise down to the DCEU. It never made sense and would only take away from Nolan’s movie.

The Robin reveal was dumb as f***.

I watched the movie like a billion years ago, so maybe what I'm going to say/write doesn't make any sense for some reason that I can't remember, but they should have not mentioned his name for most of the movie and just reveal his name was Richard Grayson in that scene.

Or something like that, maybe he got into witness protection and changed his name when he was younger and in that scene it's revealed that his real name was Richard Grayson.

But no, his name was Robin John Blake... 🤦🤦🤦

The greatest superhero Trilogy of all time. I am glad that Joseph Gordon-Levitt provides CLARITY to the numerous morons I have debated about this. Everyone keeps saying that Christopher Nolan never intended to connect his Batman to other superheroes. EXACTLY!! Because that did not become a thing until the next year when Avengers came out and had the success it did.

It still does not absolve Warner Brothers from the biggest mistake in the history of Cinema...not attaching the Dark Knight Trilogy and Man of Steel and creating the single most epic shared comic book movie universe imaginable. Instead they put their trust in the morbid proclivities of Zack Snyder and the result was Batman V Superman and this studio and DC fans have paid the price for it ever since!

@Forthas - If you look closely in Man of Steel, you'll notice that the Wayne Enterprises logo we saw on that satellite Superman and Zod crashed into when they were fighting was the same logo from Nolan's trilogy. Although Nolan said time and again that they would not cross over, I think he was at least open to the idea if it was a good enough one. However, once he found out what WB was planning, he bailed out.

@Th3Batman - I saw an interview with Jonathan Nolan and he said that Christopher did not want to be a director of Superhero films. As far as I am concerned he did not need to be involved. They needed to find directors that took his approach...grounded and character driven and not full of silly jokes and over use of CGI. Todd Phillips and Matt Reeves are two directors that could have stepped in that space.

@Forthas - Matt Reeves was actually up for the job before Snyder got it. The people living in that timeline are so lucky.

Not sure if it's the darkest timeline or not, but I like to believe there's a Justice League movie out there with Reynolds, Cavill, Gordon-Levitt as Green Lantern, Superman and Batman respectively

Having him be Robin was one of the things I hated about this movie. Not only the naming instead of Dick Grayson but also the idea that Bruce would leave the safety of Gotham to a completely untrained random cop. God that movie is stupid after the first Bane fight.

I give Nolan and his team (both in front and behind the camera) major credit for deciding early on that three would be the limit. It was refreshing to see a franchise end properly rather than be cancelled abruptly due to losing so much money as a result of declining quality over the years. Another thing I give Nolan credit for is the decision to make each movie its own stand alone story, rather than just a commercial for the next one. Obviously it's better to watch all 3, but anyone can watch TDK for example in isolation and instantly get what's going on and have a complete experience. Anyone can watch Begins without the need to watch its two sequels.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 6/27/2024, 12:14 PM
I enjoyed the character but I still think they should have kept his identity a secret by calling him officer or something till the end when he’s name is revealed to be Richard Grayson…

I would rather he had been a version of an established character than an original creation but oh well.

Also his legal name actually being “Robin” was just dumb.
