A Deleted Scene From TDKR Delves Into Bane's Backstory

A Deleted Scene From TDKR Delves Into Bane's Backstory

In an interview with GQ, costume designer Lindy Hemming reveals that we were originally going to have another flashback scene involving Bane, and would have witnessed the villain's training -- as well as an early "primitive" version of his mask..

Christopher Nolan rarely has anything left on the cutting room floor when he has finished working on his Batman movies, and has stated before that he's not really a fan of deleted scenes. But it seems with The Dark Knight Rises at least, there were a few things left out of the finished film. We already know about one brief scene involving Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) and Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman), but costume designer Lindy Hemming describes a far more interesting scene -- or series of scenes -- involving Bane (Tom Hardy). Here is what she had to say to GQ (via Vulture..

"The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury. Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears. He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together … If you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it—and I’m sure they haven’t—there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people. He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask."

Hemming obviously hadn't seen the final movie, and assumed this was all left in, but when it was explained to her that those scenes had been cut, she replied: "Well that's an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things. I won't elaborate on it too much, because it isn't in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from." This all sounds like great stuff. Although I did like the mystery surrounding the character at the same time, it would have been nice to find out a bit more about that mask and why he wears it. Can we look forward to seeing it on the Blu-ray/DVD? Unlikely since the home releases for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight featured no deleted scenes, but I guess you never know.

They could have tapped into his back story a bit more, I liked that Joker had no real back story but this villain has more rhyme and reason to his motives and that should of been explored more for sure.....plus Batman being a better detective and figuring out who Talia was would have been more Batman like. I still love this movie but as a fan I would have made some big changes to the script.

They should have kept that. I had to try to exlain to people why he had a mask on.

yeah I have the script, and that scene is in it. we see a little bit of it in the final cut, just a shot of liam neeson. The scene takes place, during the flashback, when Miranda is telling Batman about her father. Heres the scene;

"int. Temple, League of Shadows - Day

Bane in a prototype mask, stands on logs, blocking blows from men with sticks.

Taila (Voice over) - But my father could not accept Bane

Ra's al Ghul watches Bane training, turns away."

In the final cut we only saw Ra's turn away.

Makes sense .... it seems like alot of stuff was on the cutting room floor for TDKR. But this sounds like a scene that was most definitely needed (sigh)

Hmm sounds pretty awesome. Is kinda wierd for Nolan to decide to cut the scene

Well, the movie is almost 3 hours long..some things need to be cut to serve the pacing. I have heard a few people say the middle section lagged a bit or was "boring", but you would be hard pushed to find a scene that wasn't somehow vital or important to the main story at the same time.

Like others on this site I'm sure, I was an extra for a few scenes and was very disappointed in how much was cut away that was filmed.
I'm sure it didn't help that I spent months before the release editing the footage in my head, but nonetheless I definitely feel that he started with something specific in mind and then had to trim away for the sake of time.
Shoulda done what Peter Jackson did and just split the sucker!
So you didn't have to lose the parts that helped it all make sense.

My friend believes Bane didn't die when catwoman shot him cause there was a metallic cling when he got hit by the bullet, so he claims the vest has some metal plate in it. And the gun had too much power to push a person when hit without any protection, with anything protecting the person he would have exploded on the spot.

They needed to include this. It was dumb to have Bane just be there. I wanted to know what the hell happened to him before the events of the movie.

The Dark Knight Blu-ray did actually show a brief deleted scene with Heath on the bus - originally the scene with him blowing up the hospital ended with a sequence of shots featuring him onboard, but ultimately the additional footage was cut in favour of a more simplistic, raw, 'single-take' feel.

The onboard scene is included however, and is shown on that 'behind the scenes' stuff that you can choose to have integrated while watching the movie (or can be watched separately from the main menu on disc 1).

Which can also lend to the perspective that they tried to do too much with too little of time, even at almost 3 hours. I don't think that is the best excuse as to why to leave out critical back story that can make a difference to understanding the character development. If you are having to leave out too much, that means you are trying to do too much. ;-)

There were numerous scenes in which they were obvious in deleting footage. One was where Wayne scaled down the hospital to see Gordon. He starts descending and next thing you know he is in conversation with Gordon. It reminded me of the TASM scene where Parker is across the street from Uncle Ben when he got shot and all of a sudden his is huddled over him sobbing away. The emotional buy-in got edited out in both cases.

All necessary cuts. It was enough for them to say he needed the mask due to terrible injuries he suffered. No need to tack on another ten minutes.

While I think an IMAX theatre can't hold it any longer than 165 minutes, I hope Nolan includes this and some other shots on the extended cut on the blu-ray. But I doubt that'll happen.

I just wanna see the Tumblers riding on the stairs and Catwoman riding down the stairs so badly :(
And Foley being hit, Wayne walking into the party.

They don't. That's why the movie was so sloppy.

it feels like there was a lot cut out of this film and to tell u the truth we all herd about a 4 hour cut and i bet there was one.....coz so much feels missing from the film....and if there was a 4 hour cut WB should of been brave enough to split it into two and doubled thier money and nolan would of still got his respect from batman fans

so if heath was alive we would of got TDKR and nothing would of been different....i honestly believe if heath was alive nolan might of made TDKR as the fourth film

@Nomis: I agree, those scenes we're sadly missing from the movie. I'm sure for the better, I just would love to see them intersected in the film, ala TLOTR extended editions.
