A lot has been made of The Dark Knight Rises' ending. Speculation has run rampant on whether or not what Alfred saw that day at the cafe was real or an illusion to put him at ease. Actor Sir Michael Caine talked with The Huffington Post where they asked him about the last scene in the movie. He said that Christopher Nolan is a secretive director (shocker), but that he, "was so happy with the ending, obviously." They went on to ask him what it was like the day while shooting the scene. Check out what he had to say below.

"It was just an ordinary day. "You do this, you walk in, have a look around." He said, "I just want you to nod, nothing else." Because earlier I said to Bruce, "I want to see you with a wife and children and all that." I said I won't saying, I'll just nod my head. I said that earlier in the movie and that's exactly what I did at the end. I thought the ending was wonderful."

"It's the writing, you know. The thing about Chris is that he's not only a brilliant director. I think he's up there with David Lean, but David Lean couldn't write. He used Robert Bolt to write his scripts."

Caine is very hopeful that the film will perform well at this years Oacars. To check out what he had to say about the films, as well as those who worked on its, chances head on over to The Huffington Post. You can check out The Dark Knight Rises when it is released on Blu-ray and DVD tomorrow!

The ending is apt for Nolan's version of Batman.

I was dubious about Michael Caine's casting when it was announced before BB......and have since been very happily wrong. he brought such amazing depth and caring to the role, a very well-cast series overall of course...but the chemistry between Michael and Christian is the heart of this series

My favorite ending of any movie ever. Every critic or film discussion I've heard all have one thing in common when talking about TDKR: the ending was amazing.

Most of the movie seems mundane, except most of the bane scenes,it didn't hit me like i had hoped it would, it didn't seem to pay off. I didn't feel anything when bruce climbed out of the pit at all. i like it, but it just kinda dwells among it siblings

good.. now the people trying to defend the disappointing ending, saying that it had some deep and Philosophical inception-esque hidden meaning, can shut the hell up.

it was jut another hollywood cliché, forced happy ending... nothing more.

They should've just killed Batman in this Universe.

I [frick]ing hated the ending! It was too emotional..

It should have been like this: Just replace Robin and Batgirl with Alfred, Blake and Catwoman:P

[frick] TDKR!

@GiantNerd0720:
That would completely mess up the point they tried to make..

Batman is a symbol of darkness, incorruptible, everlasting.
You can't kill a legend, an idea

^yeah,but at least it was emotional because it was all about closure, and not making emotion for the sake of emotion like the ending of Spiderman 3 where everyone was crying.

The ending was somewhat cheap and didn't make any sense as did Alfred's actions in the movie in general. You've got two movies (BB and TDK) where Alfred repeatedly states that he would never give up on Bruce. In the first thirty minutes of TDKR you see him shattering Bruce's world and leaving him alone in the face of his most dangerous enemy hoping that Bruce would quit and apparently not caring what happens if he didn't. Then you see him nod and leave in the ending - why? Why would Alfred leave Bruce to whom he has been a father figure and a mentor for so long? And what makes Bruce stop being Batman - is it because he thinks that Gotham would be safe that there would be no more crime? What happened with the idea that Bruce is just a disguise and he would always need Batman even if the city didn't?
F*ck Chris Nolan for screwing up what could've been one of my favourite trilogies with his pretense for grandeur and meaning and unnecessary characters like John Blake and Talia Al Ghoul with her pathetic death scene.

You can't "kill" Batman
Nolan's version of Batman appears to share many connections to Zorro, who was the The Caped Crusader's inspiration. Zorro never dies..You might kill the man, but not Zorro.. In a way Batman became a spirit, a character separate from Wayne's human self. Whenever Bruce put the cowl on he bacme someone else.

I did like the ending, one of the only good bits of the movie, had a real sense of looking toward a better future.

Michael Caine was criminally underused in this movie.

@MegaKotze
Alfred didn't want Bruce to DIE. And the only way he thought he could spare him was by no longer supporting him as Batman, even if it meant that Bruce would hate him. That's why he was weeping in the end because it hadn't worked. Bruce still continued being Batman and Alfred "failed" Thomas and Martha Wayne.

But yeah I see your point..I wish I got to see more Alfred. His performance in this film was his best in the entire trilogy

Does no one else realize that Bruce had an ending because The Dark Knight Rises is...guess what...A MOVIE!!! Nolan gave Bruce a happy ending because the story couldn't go on forever, like comics do. Its a trilogy. A beginning. A middle. An end.

@thespiderkat @ToTheManInTheColdSweat Forced Hollywood happy ending? No meaning whatsoever? The ending had a perfect ending. Batman doesn't always have to keep going. I'm a TRUE BATMAN FAN, and can understand that there are situations where Batman can finally say "I'm done." How do you explain the countless comics in which he's done so before, occasionally even settling down with a family? Yeah, in most of these he returns, but that's the point. He can't have an ending in comics. They're continuous. If anyone wants to talk about a nitpicky ending, how about the Avengers? They just leave? Really. After they turned New York into a battleground, the government just lets them go, no questions asked. Smh. I loved that movie, don't really have a problem with the ending, but since people seem to want to nitpick TDKR's ending...

Thank you Michael Cain for explaining a perfect ending to a perfect saga.
