Michael Caine On The Difference Between THE DARK KNIGHT RISES and His Current Film MR. MORGAN'S LAST LOVE

The actor, who portrays Alfred in Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise, has just finished work on a new film "Mr. Morgan's Love" and he makes a comparison between the two films; one that may surprise you.

Christopher Nolan did a fantastic job in casting Sir Michael Caine as Alfred, and he, of course, has done an incredible job playing the iconic butler. Caine is currently working on a film titled Mr. Morgan's Last Love, where he plays a retired and lonely widower whose life is changed when he meets a "free spirit" played by Clemence Poesy.

While talking with The Hollywood reporter, Caine made an interesting comparison between this film and the highly anticipated The Dark Knight Rises and his comment is quite interesting.

“Batman has very good actors in it, but it’s all about the special effects. A film like this is about the people. It’s more interesting as an actor.”

When I first read this, it took me by surprise, with him saying that TDKR is nothing more than a popcorn movie; a special effects laden flick and nothing more. I think most would agree that Nolan's Batman films do have great actors and for the most part, they all give strong performances, going so far as a Best Supporting Actor award won by the late Heath Ledger. But on second glance, the quote could be taken quite literally in that Mr. Morgan's Last Love has no special effects, so you have no choice but to make the film about the people.

What say you fans? Is Sir Michael Caine throwing The Dark Knight Rises under the bus?

The Dark Knight Rises opens later this year, with Caine starring alongside Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Anne Hathaway, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Morgan Freeman.

No he is not under the bus. His new movie relies on only the actors but DKR relies on both. He has a very Valid point!

ya I'd say he deffinetly has a point but TDKR DOES rely on the acting a lot. but it also rely's a lot on effects.

Well it's true, by comparison Mr. Morgan's Last Love much more about the actors. Most established actors probably would rather take the top role in a film like that (if it is interesting) than the 4th or 5th in a big blockbuster movie if they had to choose one or the other. Fortunately, he didn't have to choose so we get Michael freaking Caine as Alfred in multiple movies. Let's not get things confused, Chris Nolan is still making massive summer blockbusters. His films just doesn't treat you like an idiot the way some other blockbusters do.

This is a non issue. As brilliant as Nolan's take on Batman has been, it's still a CBM. I get trying to foster conversation, but come on. Sheesh

Yeah, you shouldn't read too much into this. Besides, so what if he did mean it as TDKR is just a popcorn flick. HE'S MICHAEL CAINE. DEAL WITH IT HAHA

There are two types of special effects movies in my opinion. Character driven special effects movies, where the effects enhance the story. Like, Iron Man, Inception, The Dark Knight, Avatar.

Then you have special effect movies who only use their actors to get from set piece to set piece. Like, any Michael Bay movie, X3, and Spider Man 3. In these films the special effects are the main reason you are going to check them out. Doesn't mean they are all bad ,just different.

Generally when a movie is terrible it tries to mask itself as a character driven special effects movie when in actuality it's just a special effects movie with characters in it. Like Green Lantern, X-Men Origins Wolverine.

You're reading too much into what he said out of context.

He's making his comparison based on the type of movie and his role.

Of course a drama with a bigger role than Alfred is going to be more interesting for him as an actor. Batman is a blockbuster superhero movie. That's why he means by "it’s all about the special effects". He doesn't mean it's literally only special effects. Just the appeal of the TDKR is about action, whereas the appeal of his other movie is the characters as people.

Let's be real here though people, while I love the Nolan's Batman movies, they would be boring without a few set pieces thrown in here and there. Again, in my opinion when used properly set pieces can increase a movies scope. Like the Heinz Field shoot. If you actually SEE Bane using his device, then in the back of your head for the rest of the movie you are wondering what else it could do. Since you have seen on a grand scale what it is capable of, suddenly there is more of an urgency to what Batman and co. are fighting for. However, I do have to give Nolan credit. His three summer movies have tried to be something more than your generic summer blockbuster. Whether he succeeded is a matter of personal opinion, however the overall consensus is, yes.

Duh, a small indie is a more satisfying experience for him as an actor. His role of Alfred is small and doesn't really require an actor of his stature and talent to do it justice. Morgan Freeman = similarly wasted. Working for a paycheck is something actors do too.

Jesus Christ, this article should be featured in future classroom discussions of the word hyperbole. -___-

And he's right: A big budget, action film filled with car chases, earthquakes and explosions will more about the SFX than the actors versus an Indie film about human relationships that will need to heavily rely on the actors' talents to make it work (which as an ACTOR he would of course, find more interesting). OBVIOUSLY. >__>
