TDKR: Chris Nolan And Christian Bale Discuss The Key Scene At The Heart Of Their Trilogy

What is Nolan trying to say in his Batman run? What is this all about? What happens at the end of The Dark Knight Rises? Well, none of that can be fully explored or discussed until we have all seen the epic conclusion to Chris Nolan's Batman saga. But hit the jump to read what Nolan and Bale consider to be at the heart of these movies :)

Christopher Nolan's movies are heavily layered with various themes and ideas that drive them. They can be explored, dissected, and discussed till our brains melt and ooze out of our ears. The great thing is - they can be interpreted in any way you chose, which is an example of great art. They don't tell you what to think - they let you make up your own mind.

In the EW article Nolan and Bale briefly discuss the "thematic lynchpin" of the series, which can be found in Batman Begins:

"People need dramatic examples to shake them out of apathy and I can’t do that as Bruce Wayne. As a man, I’m flesh and blood. I can be ignored, I can be destroyed. But as a symbol — as a symbol I can be incorruptible, I can be everlasting." Bruce Wayne to Alfred Pennyworth in Batman Begins.

Chris Nolan:

". . . in each film, we talk about the symbol of the character being the key thing. It’s not about what he can achieve beating up criminals one by one. We address this again at the beginning of The Dark Knight, where you have these copycat Batmen popping up. The idea was to ask: Is that the meaning of the symbolism? To raise an army of these guys? No. Bruce sees himself as a catalyst for change in Gotham, and to me, in that conversation with Alfred, what is very clear to me is that Bruce only ever thinks of this as, like, a five-year plan, a short-term thing. I talked to Christian about this idea a lot during the making of all the films. It was the only way we knew to understand the reality of the story of Batman.

“Now, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire. He has all these resources, and there’s all kinds of ways he could use them to help Gotham. But he’s fixed on this extremely militaristic vigilante-ism. Whatever we may think of that, in Bruce’s mind, it’s all about pushing Gotham to a tipping point back to good, back to the days of his mother and father, who were trying to help the city economically. So I always saw it as a short-term thing. Something he could give up once he accomplished his mission. … And in my view, Alfred’s support for this has always been qualified support. He’s always been a great indicator about where Batman sits on the greatness to madness scale.”

Nolan continues talking about The Dark Knight Rises:

“What I see in the film that relates to the real world is the idea of dishonesty. The film is all about that coming to a head. The truth will come out. The idea that Gotham is literally crumbling from underneath. It looks like a better place than it was in Batman Begins – but is it? I see that in the world. I worry about that in the world.”

Christian Bale:

“Superheroes should tell the truth, right? That’s exactly what they’re meant to do. (The Batman/Gordon conspiracy) was a decision… that the truth was too damaging or too much for people to handle. It’s not a philosophy that [we] want to hear. It’s elitist. It’s a belief in the inability of the public to handle complexity — and it’s probably, really, sadly true, as well. It was very interesting because it’s not what I wanted. I don’t mean playing it — I mean as an audience. You want this guy to tell the truth regardless of how harsh and regardless of how cruel that is. And it’s a great problem for him as well. And as you see, at the beginning of The Dark Knight Rises, it’s one that almost destroyed him, because he’s looked back on what his original plans were and seen how far he’s drifted from that by not believing in the people."

The article says that It’s the perspective of Rises that such choices always beg a reckoning. Bale continues:

“He knows that it’s coming. Everything seems great, but you know the s— is about to hit the fan, and nobody else seems to realize that. And it’s his fault that it does.”

That's what I identify most with about these movies, TDK in particular. Because of the reality driven enviromemt in which Batman dwells the story has no choice but to dive head first into the moral implications of one man taking it upon himself to become a vigilante of sorts in order to inspire change. The Joker was a catalyst of these moral implications. He made Batman understand just how far he would have to cross those moral boundaries in order to achieve his goal of peace in Gotham. In the end Batman took it upon himself to conceal the truth and cross into that ethical grey area. TDKR appears to be the result of building a peaceful Gotham of the foundation of a lie. That's what's smart about these movies to me. Not that they are mind boggling thrillers that takes a keen mind to understand but that they go the extra mile to explore our morality and how far we are willing to go in order to inspire change.

love it, Nolan set up an epic story from the beginning about a man who became a symbol because he wanted to rescue his city from the brink and I love that the Dark Knight Rises shows that even though Bruce thinks he has saved the city, doesnt mean thats the truth and they will look at final story of Bruce having to save Gotham! cant wait to see it! I hope the ending leaves it open so Bruce can always become Batman again in times of emergency but he finally moves on from the pain of his parents death

Well this is my last time on CBM until I see the Dark Knight Rises so I hope all of my fellow CBM fans enjoy the epic conclusion to the Dark Knight trilogy

And remember, dont have any heart attacks, for most of you, your hearts are weak after the awesome Avengers and the great Amazing Spider-Man, dont let the superbly incredible Dark Knight Rises finish you guys off lol

After the brilliant, fun journey to the Avengers alongside you guys, the journey to the Dark Knight Rises has been equally as fantastic. Apart from the few negative users & trolls, it has been the best fun keeping up with the news on Batman!

I remember when I first got into the Nolan Batman movies, my friend gave me a lend of Batman Begins DVD back in 2006 and omg, I was blown away by the brilliant characters played by stellar actors, the superb plot and just the story of Batman himself was interestingly fresh and new again and it was yet another movie that continues to make me a lifelong fan of CBMs. It got me so excited for the Dark Knight which just blew me away all over again with one of the most tear-jerking endings I have ever seen in a movie. I know Gordon's son was a little cheesy at the end but he portrayed my thoughts exactly, it wasnt fair that a true hero like Batman was forced to take the blame for Dent's crime to protect the city and I cant wait to see how the rest of the story plays out on Sunday!!!!

It will be great to finally see Batman become the hero Gotham deserves AND needs!

Later guys

Very good article and points brought out. The great thing about The Dark Knight was with the lie at the end you felt like Batman was betrayed and dare I say felt like the Joker won in the end? He spent the whole movie forcing Batman to do what he wanted and wasn't that exactly what happened at the end of the movie? That was simply a fantastic film. Hopefully this one finishes it off well. I can't wait.
