THE DARK KNIGHT RISES: Why Bane will be just as compelling as The Joker

In this article, I go over why Bane will be a great new addition, to the Nolan series.

There is only a couple of months left until The Dark Knight Rises, is released upon the world. During the time leading up to this final conclusion of the Nolan saga, there has been talk about why The Dark Knight was such a success. Many have come to the agreement that it was Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker, that pulled in the masses. Others believe it was his death, that helped the film make it's way to success and because of this fans have become skeptical as to whether The Dark Knight Rises, will be able to meet the ever growing hype.

In my view, Bane will be a fantastic replacement. As many of you will know, he can match Batman both, physically and mentally, making him a true challenge. What I think separates Bane from The Joker, is that his goal, will be to destroy Gotham. Of course, that is not the only thing Bane is capable of destroying. In the comics, Bane managed to break Batman's back, so it will be interesting to see whether this will be featured in the film.

Now this is only based on various rumours but apparently, Bane is suffering from a debilitating cancer, hence why he wears the mask on his face. I think this alone already makes Bane a very compelling villain and more importantly, a different antagonist when compared to The Joker.
The problem with the last series of Batman films, was the majority of the villains used, felt the same. Tommy Lee Jones portrayal of Two Face was very reminiscent of Jack Nicholson's Joker. Apart from the differences in appearance, there was nothing that truly made them standout from one another. This does not appear to be the case with Nolan's antagonists. Each villain he has featured so far, have been very different from one another in terms of their own personal goals and complexities.

The other reason why I think Bane will be a good villain is Tom Hardy. Hardy is a rising star and has proven himself to be a very talented actor. There is an intensity in his eyes and considering the majority of his face will be covered up by a mask, this will be a very important trait to have. There have been complaints that Hardy is too short to play Bane but I don't think it matters to be perfectly honest. Yes, Bane is portrayed in the comics to be massive and much bigger than Batman but that is the comic world. In the Nolanverse, he fits perfectly. I have never been a big fan of his mask in the comics and cartoons, so this look is definitely more appealing. He looks intimidating, almost like a Rottweiler, with its muzzle on. It makes him look vicious and extremely unpredictable, which I feel makes the character very interesting visually. I know there are people that aren't a big fan of this look but to be fair, I am certain, I remember some fans that were not particularly impressed by The Joker's new look either. At the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference.

One of the biggest criticisms being hurled at this new character, is his voice. People have had trouble making out what he is saying and are worried they will not be able to understand him, during the film. I have not really had that problem but I can understand that some have and it isn't fair to them, if they can't understand. I personally hope Christopher Nolan fixes this issue but unfortunately, there have been articles stating that he has no desire to do so, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

All in all, I feel Tom Hardy will be a great addition to this film and will make Bane his own character, just like Heath Ledger did with The Joker. The film does not have a death behind it this time but I think it is safe to assume this will be just as big as The Dark Knight, if not bigger.

Now to ask all of you. What do you think?

I agree with you, literaly every movie that Tom Hardy is in, reviewers always point him out as the best part.

Even in freaking "this Means War" people were saying that Tom Hardy especially makes that movie bareable.

He's just one of those rare extremely naturally talented actors that puts his all into everything.

Like ...Gary Oldman...hold on, he's in this movie!

Like ...Marion Cotillard..wait She's in this movie TOO!!

@MovieMann: That is awesome. As I said in the article, Bane looks like a Rottweiler with a muzzle on. He looks very threatening.

Agreed, and as you also said in your article, what he does whith his eyes is amazing to me.

You look in his eyes an you see this Psychopathic emotional vaccancy, he's like a cold, calculating predator, and every one else are like sheep to him.

That is personally how I have interpreted him so far, just from his freaking eyes!

Bane is who I'm looking forward to most in the movie, Tom Hardy is going to be fantastic as the guy from what we've seen.

Regarding his voice...I love it. It juxtaposes with his appearance but compliments it too. Besides, I think this Bane will be a man of few words, just like in the comics.

Compelling? Probably. As compelling as the Joker? Highly doubtful. Even if Hardy plays Bane as well as Ledger played the Joker, it won't be quite on the same level because when it comes down to it, Bane is a lesser character and his relationship with Batman isn't as iconic or interesting to watch.

I agreed with you on every aspect of the article. I don't think it'll make as much money as The Dark Knight because I feel Ledger's death is the main reason it made so much. I'm not gonna compare Ledger's Joker to Hardy's Bane. Though I think Ledger was phenomenal as The Joker and did the best portrayal, I feel Hardy is the better actor and will be the shining star in The Dark Knight Rises and truely show A-list material. I wanna say he'll be better than Ledger but their characters are completely different and in someways a different evil. Good write up.

Initially I was on the fence about Tom Hardy, simply because he's so white. While I suppose ethnicity shouldn't matter, there are so few hispanic characters in comics, and even less established villains, it seems a shame not to adapt one faithfully.

But Tom Hardy is a great actor, and apart from Nemesis, I've liked him in everything I've seen. Bane won't be as compelling as the Joker though. If it is somehow true that he's suffering from a "debilitating cancer", then there is absolutely no way he could best Batman physically. That's a farce, and not to spectate over, so I'll disregard it. The Joker is, cinematically, an easier character to bring to the screen, considering there's less physicality to adapt as well as his lack of "super powers". He can be depicted accurately and make sense. Bane on the other hand, won't be.

im with u on the cancer thing, id never heard that until now and ive been following this film pretty verhmently

im sure it was said in the empire magazine stuff that he wears the mask as he needs anestethic due to injuries from his past, which isnt really connected to cancer as far as i know. he has all the scarring on his neck and head which might be a give away.

if anything it might be that he has been left in constant pain from an injury/surgery and needs the anestethic to function and it just so happens to let him feel less pain and be a more forbidable fighter.

after TDK i said that i didnt want a physical threat villain like anyone who would just shoot batman like deadshot as in a more real world like nolan's batman would instantly be assassinated by a sniper and it wouldnt really work. i also didnt want catwoman or a love interest as it felt to me like it would be too much like the love interest of the week idea we get with all these types of movies, especially bonds movies and cartoons/comics. but nolans addition of the 8 year gap is genius in terms of bruce wayne getting over the death of rachel (which is something people seem to be forgetting when they complain 8 years is too long to get over dent and the joker)

i saw the tv miniseries "stuart a life backwards" where tom hardy played a skinny homeless man opposite a writer/charity worker played by benedict cumberbatch and both were incredible

didnt see hardy then until sat watching bronson in an indepedent cinema a few months b4 he was announced as being cast in inception and i said specifically during the film that hardy needed to be a nolan batman villain.
and i had no idea which.

little did i know that he would go on to be cast as bane (which initially annoyed me, being a physical threat foe, but as soon as i realised how great a character bane can be did i love the idea).

from the single image and in the teaser showing the mask, to the menacing walk and single line of dialogue showing the wierd laboured but very interesting/ so un macho voice ive grown to love the idea and because i dont hold the source material up like a religious holy book it doesnt bother me that its not comic verbatim.

then seeing and hearing hardy's understated and unshowoffish performance in the imax prologue i cant wait to see what he is like in the final film.

whoever had to follow ledger/the joker was going to have some big shoes to fill both inside and outside the world of the film but i really think hardy is the mane for the job.

I luv that gif. What version of the prologue u have? Please put one up of Bane dropping two levels on the plane and catching himself with no problem.

Tom Hardy will be great as Bane. I've seen the prologue in IMAX and he is great even though the only thing you can see is his eyes. The look that he gives Pavel was so evil.

The 8 year gap makes sense when Nolan explains it. After the events of TDK with Gordon and Batman decision, there needs to be time for that decision to have an impact on the city and to see how certain things work out. He explains it better than i did but it made sense.

Anyone else notice how this movie could possibly follow some of the Bruce Wayne Fugitive story arc?

The comic had Cain, master strategist and super assassin, frame Bruce Wayne for murdering his girlfriend after deducing Bruce was Batman. Bruce escapes prison and leaves behind his life as Bruce Wayne, feeling that Bruce was a pointless charade and that he was truly Batman. Catwoman finally convinces him that he needs his alterego. This story arc also included a cameo from Azrael.

The similarities so far... Cain is basically the stealthier, less muscular version of Bane, and actually trained a young Bruce. Catwoman saves Bruce, figuratively. Nightwing, like Gordon in TDK, is the only one that believes Bruce is innocent, and incapable of murder. I think the confrontation between Batman and Azrael was over the fact that Batman wasn't trying to clear Bruce's name, so JGL may play that role in trying to clear Batman's name as a new ally.

Nolan could easily twist a few of these elements with some of the Knightfall story arc, and give us one heck of a movie.

I liked the mask from the beginning, but I just can't understand his voice. Eh, there's always the DVD. It comes with subtitles. His master plan will definitely be great. I think it's going to be Ra's plan of fear destroying Gotham. But Bane takes it a little far and makes the fear a reality, and not just a toxin-induced hallucination. I don't read the comics that much, so I can't make any comparisons.
