Batman V Superman Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition Review

Here are my thoughts of Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice Ultimate Edition warning there are some *spoilers.* Where do I begin with my view of this film? How about from the beginning and stating that this is most certainly the film we needed and deserved in movie theaters. I watched this version a few days ago and said to myself “This film is already making sense.” Let me begin by first saying I do understand that scenes must be cut in a movie because of run time but the scenes that were cut should not have been.

Seeing the Africa scene having Jimmy Olsen introduced was a great moment because hearing the classic name brought a smile to my face & I was thinking wow the audience in a theatre would embrace that because of even a smaller classic character. In this scene it was more believable that people would have thought Superman killed those people because their bodies were burned vs in the theatrical release just passing around a bullet because think…Why would Superman of all characters need a bullet? Lois Lane (Amy Adams) was portrayed very well with in your face investigating & so was Clark Kent (Henry Cavill).

I was totally impressed by Clark’s willing to go the extra mile & even go against Perry White’s (Laurence Fishburne) authority. Clark Kent investigating took me back to the days of Superman the Animated Series when he would investigate many times as Clark & not Superman. In my view it showed how great & valuable of a character he is as well having screen time balanced out with Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck).

Speaking of the Bat his scenes once again amazed me as it did in theaters. Seeing Clark investigate also help bring clarity to why Superman wanted to stop Batman in what he was doing such as when Superman stands in the street as Batman chased the KG Beast and his crew. Even Lex Luthor’s (Jessie Eisenberg) plan made more sense. His plan was flushed out more in the Ultimate Edition. Even small scenes such as the African lady returning to admit she didn’t tell the truth, the explaining of the lead wheel chair, the little boy looking back at his Mother as the crowd wanted to fry Superman, Clark calling his Mother & Ma Kent waving at Batman as he flew away after he rescued her were meaningful and touching moments that made the story feel complete.

Seeing Batman in that warehouse scene made me look very forward to Batman solo movies to come. Alfred (Jeremy Irons) performance was brilliant as well as Fishburne and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot). It is amazing how 30 minutes was a huge turn around for this movie to go in the right direction. Those 30 minutes made a huge difference and improvement because those scenes where all in the right places flushing out the story more successfully than the theatrical version. Zack Snyder actually made a brilliant film with the two biggest Superheroes of all time. Snyder did show Superman caring for people and heading into the direction of the Superman we will come to know someday.

Is this Ultimate Cut perfect? No. Does this movies still have some issues? Yes. I do not think that tone was not the problem instead the editing was the major problem for the theatrical release.  However this presentation of the Ultimate Cut is an indication that DC is actually headed in the right direction. A lesson to be learned from this film especially from this release is that although some people can cover up the truth, the truth has a way of coming out and the Ultimate Edition is the truth for this movie.
