Well, it looks like another round of release date delays may be imminent.
Variety has published a lengthy (seriously, best put the kettle on) report on the current state of the film industry, and the trade believes it's only a matter of time before the major studios announce that their tentpole release scheduled for early (possibly mid) 2021 will be pushed back yet again.
The COVID-19 pandemic has wreaked havoc in Hollywood, and even though the vaccine has begun to roll out, it's going to be a while before things return to some semblance of normality. For now, 65% of U.S. theaters — including those in popular markets like New York and Los Angeles — remain closed, and that's not expected to change anytime soon.
Marvel's Black Widow is currently set for release on May 7, but a simultaneous Disney+ debut is said to be on the table. Meanwhile, Sony has already announced that Morbius, The Living Vampire has been pushed back almost a full seven months from March 19 to October 8.
We'll keep you updated if any other release date changes are confirmed, but it looks like the studios are content to continue playing the wait and see game. If there is another round of significant delays, let's hope it's the last.
