WEREWOLF BY NIGHT Director Michael Giacchino Addresses BLADE Cameo Rumor

Recently, a rumor did the rounds that Mahershala Ali was going to appear as Blade in Werewolf By Night before a scheduling conflict got in the way, and director Michael Giacchino has now weighed in.

We're never short of a few (well, more than a few) online rumors when it comes to upcoming Marvel Studios projects, and more often than not, they turn out to be either completely false or at least mostly inaccurate.

Recently, the lads over at the Weekly Planet podcast - who do tend to be pretty reliable - claimed that Mahershala Ali was set to make his MCU debut (unless you happen to count his off-screen voice cameo in Eternals' post-credits scene) as Blade in the Disney+ Werewolf By Night Halloween Special, and Michael Giacchino was asked about the report during an interview with BSL.

"You know what, rumours are insanely inaccurate I would say…99.9% of the time," said the composer-turned-director. "The thing about the Marvel Cinematic Universe is everyone thinks that every single thing is going to be connected. Every single thing. And it doesn’t mean that we’re not connected. But, I didn’t feel the need to blatantly say we were."

"You know, every other show has done that and they’ve done it brilliantly and I thought 'you know what?', when I was a kid, I would pull a comic off the shelf and this particular Werewolf By Night issue had nothing to do with anything else in the Marvel Universe. What’s wrong with that? That’s okay! You know, they can all live together but we don’t need to always show them together."

It doesn't sound like an appearance from The Daywalker is on the cards for this Special Presentation, but Giacchino doesn't actually confirm or deny that Ali was going to show up, so maybe it was the original plan.

Blade or no Blade, initial reactions to Werewolf By Night have been very positive, and it sounds like old-school horror fans are going to have plenty to look forward to.

While the likes of Moon Knight and the Doctor Strange movies have included horror elements, Werewolf By Night looks like it's going to be Marvel Studios' first full-on foray into the genre. The black-and-white teaser gives of a grindhouse creature feature vibe, as a group of monster hunters come to realize that a member of the team is one of the very beasts they've been pursuing.

Have another look at the footage below.

Though very little has been officially revealed about this Special, based on what we see here, there's a very good chance the extensive plot leak that did the rounds earlier this year was accurate.

Werewolf By Night will premiere on Disney+ just in time for Halloween on October 7.

I hope he's not in it. Moon Knight either.

Let's let this thing stand on its own. The Midnight Sons can meet up later. I think introducing Werewolf by Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Man Thing is enough for this.

Not holding out any hopes for a cameo, but it does feel weirdly comforting to know that the most well received projects of Phase IV were almost all Midnight Sons adjacent.

@DrReedRichards - I was never a big Midnight Sons fan in the comic books, but I've gotten a bit tired of the less serious and more jokey direction of a lot of the properties. I mostly enjoyed Moon Knight and this special looks really cool. I liked the OG Blade movies and think that Ali will do well in the role. I just want them to do something similar to Phase 1 avengers and let each character build up more or less on their own rather than doing too much too fast.

With the amount of team-ups coming up, namely Thunderbolts and the inevitably announced Young Avengers, I don't have a problem with them taking their time with the Midnight Sons. Plus, it's gonna be a niche little corner of the MCU, dealing more with the horror and the paranormal and less the uber-duper cosmic stuff.

@DrReedRichards - Agreed. I was once upon a time hoping for a more cosmic direction, but that hasn't really coalesced into anything. Thor + GOTG is it. I would love to see an adaptation of Annihilation, Kree/Skrull War, Michael Korvac, and more.

Annihilation and Conquest are in my list of anticipated events too, along with Onslaught for the X-Men. But that is all way, waaaaay down the line.

@DrReedRichards - Well, keep in mind that Marvel has like 8 unannounced movies/D+ shows/D+ movies for Phase 6. Plenty of time to build toward a Midnight Sons movie. By then we will have Blade, WWbN, Man-Thing, Dr. Strange (and all that comes with him), possibly Ghost Rider, etc. So it's definitely possible. But then again, as has been pointed out, they have a lot of other team-ups coming so they may take the slow route on building up to that. However, if there is a lot of good fan interest and reaction to the first bits of it that they are going to start putting out, they may fast-track it. I mean, if everyone ends up gushing about WWbN Marvel might think that they should strike while the proverbial iron is hot instead of dragging it out and taking the chance that the interest fades.

Everything you mentioned, plus Moon Knight. They're clearly setting some iteration of the team up. When that happens, remains to be seen.

@DrReedRichards - D'oh! Forgot to mention MK. But, there's another piece of a potential MS team-up that they've already established. So it definitely seems like - wait... what is that smell? (Sniff sniff) Is that... blood and hellfire I smell on the horizon? Mixed with a little mystic sand and werewolf name? Perhaps wart of a Man-thing and a hint of Agamotto? I think we have a VERY nice supernatural witches brew coming together here.

@DrReedRichards - Conquest too! They did leave the door open for Ultron to return. I think they'd have to do the Phalanx first. That would be a cool first X-property crossover event as its quite different from what has been done before, I don't think Age of Apocalypse would be appropriate due to alternate timeline, and Onslaught shouldn't be the first X-crossover.

@grif -

If they're watching a music composer's directorial debut with this monochrome feature as the first horror project of an otherwise inescapably popular franchise just for a cameo, then "pissed" might serve them just right.

I’m really so tired of cameos and references and nothing ever being good enough when it stands on its own.

Fans have become ridiculous, if something doesn't cater to an overarching idea and connection 5 years down the road they think it's trash or underwhelming. Too much fan service? Complaints. Too little fan service? Complaints.

Marvel needs to make a big deal about Blade next year, 25th anniversary of the original movie, the MCU version coming out and the character himself is turning 50 years old, I want next year to be all about Blade

I'm really interested to see Mahershala Ali as Blade. He's gonna nail it.

@kazuma - this is basically what's going on now.

Fans: "what exciting cameos are in this? I hope blade"

Giacchino: "what, you think this is marvel studios where everything is building off of everything?"

I'm more interested in seeing Man-Thing TBH.

We did get him on screen once as a laughable direct to video horror film.

For some reason most of the main cast was Australian and they spoke with broken Mississipi accents. Sometimes the Aussie accent would slip out.

Also fun fact. Jessica Jones star Rachael Taylor (Trish Walker/Hellcat) was one of the main cast.

I'm not expecting a Blade cameo in the show, but it would definitely be pretty dope to see, even if it's just a post-credits teaser. I'm all-in on Mahershala as Blade, though it would be nice if they could find some kind of role for Wesley Snipes.

Everything is about cameos and rumors and post credit scenes and whats next. Its never good enough to live in the now with what you get. sites like this trade in bullshit for clicks and fans eat it up and then get mad and disappointed when bullshit doesnt come true. You always see here its "disappointing" and "unfortunate" when these things dont happen. Shit that never was true and had no basis in reality doesnt happen and thats disappointing.

Maybe Mephisto will show up and everyone will finally be happy.
